SCRATCH BUILT MODERN EUROPEAN STYLE WAGONS 4mm ish

Whilst not 100% scratch built, my JNA/A has finally got started. I’ve used a Roco box as a base and built around it. Once it’s finished I should be able to cast some more. Bogies may be available from George at some point but I’m using a set of my Revolution JNA/T ones at present.

Nice work Scoobyra. The Roco box wagons are a nice model in their own right, shame in a way to have to use it but the under frame detail is good.

That’s the method I used back in 1990 on the very first bogies wagons I ‘had a go at’, not being very skilled or confident at modelling.

:) Looking back they weren’t very good at all. I used four Lima Neill & Brown bogie palvans. Filed all the details off the side, glued some 1.5mm square ribs up the side and thicker horizontal top edges (Bought the styrene from Beatties Models).

They were as near as I could get to PTAs or JUAs running in and out of Crawley New Yard, but with the wrong bogies of course. I couldn’t afford the Lima PTAs or ‘Intercity’s’ correct bogies back then.

Then to top it off for some reason I painted then in orange and added RMC to the sides.....LOL. OMG they really were pretty rubbish.

Just as an aside, noticed that Hattons are also doing the GPS bogies from the Heljan BOC Tanks for £8 each. Bit steep £16 a pair. £8 a pair and I’d have snapped up a load.

What livery are these going into? Silver VTG?

Marco I feel your pain mate, I am also suffering from Lack of Pub. To make matters worse I am now down to my last few bottles of Harveys ale. Friday Marks the start of my 7th week of complete isolation.

Still I am very lucky, I can at least see and hear the trains.

This was 66056 on Tuesday with the ‘Ratty Rake’ on the very early Newhaven Day Aggregates to Acton 09:32 Hamsey AHBC.

These wagons are so loud compared with the modern VTG rakes.

I didn’t make the best job of it Grizz!

Still, it was good practice. I’m going to start again from scratch and try and build it properly.

Cheers

Interesting project scooby, are you intending it to be a version of the Mrl jna?

If you are short on Tf25 bogies Grizz has zillions of them, don't tell him I told you!

The Roco wagons look interesting to buy as they are, as a alternative to the expensive revolution JNA? . Only disadvantage being slightly out of scale(?)  I did attempt a build of the newer jna but wasn't completely happy with it as I couldn't get the paint and transfers right. Maybe il revisit them. Can't go to the pub at the moment anyway! I hope we can get back to some normality soon as I need some bogies off George and he usually makes Burton!

Who's bought a hattons 66??

Yep, NACCO JNA/A, but I’ve messed it up a bit. The Roco boxes are too low but almost the right width and bang in the right length. The downside is there’s a whole load of work to do with them so it’s probably just as easy to start from scratch. My issue is I’m pretty useless at making square boxes - give me some weathering to do, or build scenery (if you’ve seen my trainset you’ll see why) and I’m fine, but this is harder than I thought.

Mike that looks good to me, are you going to complete that one? The inspection door looks particularly good. I’ve tried those a few times and they nearly always finish up looking way to chunky.

Making the boxes can be tricky, particularly if batch building. I’ve found issues with different batches of HIPS styrene sheet, which have tended to result in bowing inwards along the length at the top of the wagon, over time. Quite annoying as it is very hit and miss. Can’t pin down why. Also maybe down to the Evergreen sections added to the sides, as some of these were a bit bowed before I used them.

I always use a fixed bladed Stanley knife with a good supply of new blades, 150mm and 300mm stainless steel rules and a 150mm steel engineers square. The square had no stocks fitted so I glued a 1mm styrene stock on one side, I’ve had it for more than 20 years and it works quite well. Lots of the available engineers squares have stocks that are way too deep for cutting styrene sheet.

Marco, I bought Hattons 66005 (DC), 66088 (DC) and my son bought me 66762 (DCC Sound). Sent 66088 over to my son for running in and he reported a slight wobble issue with it in one direction but because of social distancing I can get it back here to look at.

66005 test run here on short straight track, seems ok.
66762 test run by my son, seems ok.

I don’t plan to kick off at Hattons, I am very grateful that someone has been courageous enough to make a class 66 challenger to Bachmann’s overpriced monopoly or the Hornby/Lima toy. The issues will iron out and none of this is helped by the fluke timing of the model’s release and the virus outbreak.

There rant done. ; )

PS it was 66056 on the Newhaven yesterday with the Ratty Rake.....again.....getting bored with that now!

I was a bit disappointed with my first effort, so I’ve reworked it. I’ve replaced the horizontal rib and put it in the correct place. I’ve filed the weld line down and although it still looks way too big, it looks better than it did. The vertical rib supports are the bits that’s killing it because I can’t get them to look uniform. I wish I’d just left them square now and not bothered trying to angle them! Anyway, it’s not a million miles off so I’ll fill in the scratches along the bottom, tidy a few bits and pieces up, and then get casting.

Where did you get the bogies from on those flat wagons Grizz?

Firstly I totally second Marco’s comment about a video of your box wagons and layout! Superb work all round! Are you going to cast wagon bodies from the one you built?..

Ah well, erm I bought a sh*t load from a guy at Burgess Hill model show a while ago, for £200. He had a stall selling models, Bachmann spares etc, think he was from Kent. They are the TF25s that go under the Bachmann bogie cement wagons. They didn’t come with wheels or couplings. The best wheels I have found are Bachmann 36-034, but I have to file down the brake shoes by a mm or so to get them to fit.
My biggest mistake was not buying more Bachmann Y25s From Peters Spares about five years ago and now I can’t get them at a reasonable price in any quantity anymore.

You may remember me regularly bimbling on about the cost of RTR wagon bogies. For me kit building bogies does not deliver consistent results and is irritatingly time consuming. Where as building wagon bodies, whilst watching some old black and white film and drinking ale really makes me happy. Particularly whilst I am in solitary confinement and the pubs and the local brewery shop is closed.

I found these in a cupboard at home whilst grabbing modelling stuff before I had to move out and go into isolation. Think I started them on holiday in Denmark a while back and forgot where I had put them. They are in the John L Fox book, KHA-E. I really need some of the hooks they use to secure the hoods at the ends of the wagons and also I need OO European wagon transfers to suit them.

The reason I asked about the bogies was that they look similar to the Revolution ones and can be easily modified to represent the other TF25s under the JNA/A

i was going to cast the box but I’ve taken it apart - I just wasn’t happy with it, and I’ve since found a 3D print for one in 2mm which I’ve asked if it can be scaled up.

That’s an interesting box of wagons you have there!

Even in the darkest of times I have tried to keep faith that one day I would again be able to sup pints of Harvey’s. My Lords be praised today is THAT day.....

By a very special delivery service I have been saved.....

Mike are these the bogies that are similar to the TF25s?

These are LN25s....do they go under the JNA/A wagons? These have the shocks centred over the axle boxes, think this example might be on a German wagon....

The flat top style of TF25 was used under the 100 Nacco/Caib (later VTG) boxes for Mendip Rail and the batch of TEAs for Petroplus as well as a batch of JGA hoppers for Bardon Aggregates.

The depressed centre variant, which moved the dampers to the ends of the bogie is an evolution of the flat top type and is a lot more common. There are several subtle variations and it is currently marketed as the LN25. The LN25 was launched around 5 years ago.

Hope this helps

That's the flat top style of TF25, the initial development in the current TF/LN25 family and the same as under the Mendip NACO/VTG39xx wagons. The picture shows one of the Bardon Aggregates JGAs in the AI271xx series

Yes Grizz, that’s them, and as Jo says.

The Revolution ones need the shocks cutting off and then I’ll just use plastic rod to replicate them in the right place. I may not bother flattening the tops though.

I needed an RHTT for a part of my layout, to be made up of two short wagons, but shorter than the FEA-F used on NR, so that it can fit in the bay platform at Hamsey.

This is the progress so far, using some old Dapol tank wagon barrels. This is the third incarnation for these barrels, firstly as originally intended as part of the kit, then for a diesel fuelling point with the chassis being used for box opens. Now for a short RHTT.

Finally hope to get on with these RILS covered Hood wagons. I have now taken delivery of a load of Evergreen styrene strips and sections to top up my stocks of it. Unlike the nearly finished one shown, I am planning to use Bachman RTR Y25 bogies. Although sadly I don’t have many left, I have just enough for the remaining 7 vehicles. So wish I’d bought more from Peter’s Spares when they were available several years ago.

Anyone any ideas.....I am after some hooks for detailing these RILS. I have looked on the web but typing in hooks just ends up with the usual coupling hooks as the majority search return. They look like this and are used to secure once the curtain side / hood is closed.
