toplink@()1989))((
This is my first go at scratch building a 7mm loco in brass, I found a drawing in an old copy of Railway Modeller magazine and it just said build me! I started a few years ago by making the frames. After dragging it out of the cupboard when I decided to finish building my layout Wheeldon Mill an industrial layout ( I only have one other working loco! not very interesting operation for the veiwer or operator ) I decided to extract my digit and get on with it, next came the cylinders, slide bars, support brackets and axle bearings, I must say at this point, I do not have any machine tools so all my work is done by hand. I will leave it at that for now, cheers, Pete.
toplink@()1989))((
I cut out the slide bar support brackets from sheet then soldered strip round the outside to give the impression of being a casting. I assembled the cylinders and fitted the slidebars. From this angle the method of compensation for the front wheels can be seen, being an 0-4-0 it needs all the help to keep all four wheels on the track for good current pick up. Here the supports are fitted to the slide bars. I made the coupling rods, connecting rods and crossheads next. I will carry on with the build later, thanks for watching, Pete. Spitfire2865
Now this is impressive. Though I must ask, what persuaded you to throw all those brackets into your username?
N15class
Nice to see some scratchbuilding. Are the cylinder to far apart? the connecting rods are or seem to be at an angle.

toplink@()1989))((
Nice to see some scratchbuilding. Are the cylinder to far apart? the connecting rods are or seem to be at an angle. Yes I know, unfortunately when I assembled the cylinders to the frames I made too big an allowance for clearance between the crossheads and coupling rods, I had already soldered everything up and I couldn,t be ar&*d to dismantle it again, when the body is on and viewed from the side it isn,t so obvious. toplink@()1989))((
After making the cylinders I thought it might be a good idea to make something to stop it with so I made the brakes, as it is a scratchbuild I wanted to make them myself but I didn,t believe I could make 4 identical shoes, while at an exhibition I watched a chap make some small parts with epoxy resin, so first job, make a pattern out of plasticard. I made the mould with kitchen mastic, I had to have a couple of attempts before getting it right. I made the brake hangers out of brass. And withe the cast brake shoes. Fitted to the chassis. Thats it for now, cheers, Pete.
RMweb Premium Dava Posted March 18, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 18, 2016 Can you please tell me what issue of RM has this plan? Regards, John Hutnick Looks like a much better drawing than some 4mm Barclay drawings in a recent (last year) issue of RM. This is emerging as a gye bonnie wee pug...! toplink@()1989))((
I made the cross beam and coupling beams for the hand brake, very fiddly unfortunately during soldering up the hand brake threaded rod twisted but it took such a long winded time to get that far I couldn,t bring myself to dismantling it to straighten it up, hopefully it shouldn,t be to noticable. I fitted the sand pipes front and rear, then found a photo that showed the front ones much more clearly and realised I had fitted the front ones the wrong side of the wheel, I wasn,t happy with how they looked before but it wasn,t a big job to sort them out. I painted them with car matt black airosol over grey primer, forgive the bolt it was just a handle for painting. Cheers, Pete.
toplink@()1989))((
Up date on my loco, I,ve replaced and painted the sand pipes, next up is the foot plate. To attach the boiler and to be able to strip every thing for painting I have made a key hole in the smoke box base to line up with a bolt head on the footplate. I built the cab as a separate section and bolt it to the boiler I had to cut a hole in the boiler to fit the motor, however there are a lot of details to go on the foot plate that will hide the motor, I hope, I intend to paint the motor matt black also. I built up the firebox from a Terrier backhead and some brass sheet. Next up I built the saddle tank using formers and brass sheet annealed to help it to bend to shape. And with a couple of castings on for effect. A bit more work done to the cab. I will post up some more progress later, cheers for now, Pete.
toplink@()1989))((
As can be seen from the last photo posted the cab roof sit 2mm high at the rear, so I had to dismantle it to reduce the height. I have fitted the coal bunkers to the cab. Handrails fitted to the saddle tank, and a start made on detailing the buffer beams. Well thats about as far as I am at the moment, I have made a start on the backhead details, I will post up pic,s when I have got it something like. Cheers for now, Pete. toplink@()1989))((
I have made up the regulator handle, it isn,t quite right as I am using a Terrier backhead but its good enough for me. Also fitted are the coupling hooks, they are there for effect as I am using Spratt and Winkle couplers. And smoke box door with dart. Thats it for now, cheers, Pete. stevejjjexcov
Nice job will look great when finished. The railway modeller did a series of industrial loco,s in the 70's one was Cadbury no1 and a peckett if I recall correctly
toplink@()1989))((
I fitted the buffers last night, using 5 minute epoxy, when I checked later the rears had twisted:( curses, I,ve got them soaking in acetone to try and get them off and start again. Cheers, Pete.
toplink@()1989))((
Well its been a very long time since any updates on my build, I,ve been distracted a few times (I,m easily, ooh thats a nice shiney thing, sorry what was I saying?) with other projects, but I have done some more work on the A/B, when I made the backhead up I used photos but I wasn,t happy with the way it looked, The regulator handle looked way too long so I removed and shortened it, I think it looks better now. I have also made and fitted the sand boxes, the tank filler, which hides the fixing screw for the saddle tank, pipework and reversing rod and new bigger head proto type buffers, getting close to painting now, just need to finish cab and buffer detailing. Thanks for viewing, cheers, Pete.

toplink@()1989))((
Its been a long time since my last update so here are a few photos of whats been happening. I had a couple of runs on the tank so I had to leave it a couple of days to harden so I could rub down and respray the primer. After a couple of days I sprayed the parts with Humbrol Brunswick Green, mainly because I already had it and I,m a tight wad. And the running plate painted satin black. There is more done but I haven,t uploaded them yet, and some detailing to do to the backhead, soon as they are done I will share them. Cheers for now, Pete. toplink@()1989))((
Spent a few hours in the shed doing some painting, fitting extra detail to the back head, not prototypical but I,m happy with it. And with paint. Running plate detail painted. And body loose assembled on its wheels, still work to do on the cab, detailing and what have you. Still got the Dcc chip and associated gubbins to fit, coal her up, fit a crew and she will be good to go, getting a bit giddy now! Cheers, Pete.
