Hi. Yesterday was spent delivering the completed models and collecting a nice batch ready for the WB.

Today, I spent making the inside motion for 9028.  This was a combination of casting leftovers from the spares boxes and a bit of scratch building.  It does fill the empty gap nicely.

It does mean the pickup arrangement will have to change though. The plungers will be OK on the rear drivers, the front divers will not be used so the bogie and maybe the tender will have them instead.  Almost ready for the painting now.

Dukedog 9028 is almost finished. Awaiting delivery of number plates. Then fitting crew, coal, fire irons, loco tie bars and lamps. All followed by very light weathering not forgetting the BT decal on the tender. It runs very quiet and smooth with the MSC ex Ron Chaplin motor/gearbox. The bogie pickups are a great success too.

Blimey Ken you certainly don't hang about !

Looking good, I hope she gives you as much pleasure running as it has watching your build here.

( Black is the new green ! )

Thank you.

Always good to hear ( or not ! ) a quiet motor install.

May I ask if the MSC motor and gearbox comes as one assembled unit or do you need to assemble the gearbox separately ?

I'm aware of the range but never seen them in person.

Grahame

The motor on this unit is the Cannon and the the unit is ready assembled. Check them all out on the MSC web site, it gives diagrams and measurements plus specs on all their units.  Regards, Ken

In 1953, 9028 had a lamp bracket on the smokebox door, but somewhat earlier, had lamp brackets on the top of the smokebox and on the smokebox door!

Thanks for the info. I am not pedantic regarding the date, I am happy to have models on my layout from anytime around that period. So on the s/box will be just fine by me.

While awaiting the number plates from Guilplates I have been playing around with the next kit. This it the Northstar design LNWR Coal Tank

I have one of my own and makes an occasional appearance to Trenruth (along with some other LNWR locos)

This is a simple design and is going together well.  The chassis does not lend itself easily to plunger pickups with the dummy sliders and motor/gearbox on the sprung centre axle. So it will have wiper style instead.

Quite pleased with the progress made today.  It was surprisingly tedious work doing the operating rods for the sanders. The left and right boxes are connected through the s/box. also they are operated via the right hand hand rail.

Anyway, the remaining detailing should now be straight forward by comparison.

Body is now completed.  The chassis is tomorrows work. That needs the coupling rods assembling and checking it all runs OK before heading to the paint dept.

I have built quite a number of these Gladiator Princess kits, so it's off again with another. The difference here is I have been handed a body I built some time ago and asked to build a tender and loco chassis for it.

So here goes with the tender.

Quite straight forward, the only fettling is the coal shut and the fire iron tunnel. Always a need for that on these tenders but nothing difficult.  Plenty of solder to tidy up in there though.

Hi. Enjoyed the Easter w/end especially as the weather was brilliant. I still managed to get a bit done on the WB as well.

The chassis was a very simple affair to construct.

The body is now ready for the final clean up for priming.  Now it's on with the loco chassis.

A start made today on the loco chassis.  A bit of shaving off of the triangular supports on the rear subsection to get them to fit. Other than tap all went OK there.

The next issue was getting the crossheads to run silky smooth. That took quite some time this afternoon before I was happy with them. I will now turn my attention to the brake gear. That's between taking the car for MOT and service, another wasted part day.:(

Moving forward on the chassis, the only thing that was fiddly to fit were the sanding pipes and supports. The fitting of the drivers and adding the coupling rods was amazing, straight from the pillar drill the the wheels and a perfect fit with absolutely now tight spots. I wish that was the case on every build:rolleyes:.

Just noticed I have the link supports facing the wrong way. No problem to turn them around thankfully:wub:

All ready for painting now.  Ran very smooth straight off too.  So tomorrow wheels off a good clean of the tender and loco chassis then on with the next kit.  Looks like a Gladiator DX will be next.

Although very busy redecorating and having new floors laid in the kitchen & utility rooms I've managed a bit of time on the WB.  The Princess chassis  and tender is all finished and ready for the off. His painter will make a nice job matching the loco body I built a while ago. Not very often I get to see a painted model always sending them off in primer.

Here she is all done.

Right, the decorating finished for now, the flooring guys arrive on Tuesday to rip up the old and prep for the the tile laying.

So a chance to start the Gladiator LNWR SDX. I happen to love these locos and must have had a blank spot when I sold my own SDX a little while ago. That means I will just have to replace it.

Anyway, starting with the tender, a nice simple one to build. Then the start of the body.  Careful bending is needed for this stage as the sides are in four sections and meet in the centre of the rear.

Thanks Peter.    I have now completed the tender, except the drawbar, that will be sorted when I have the loco completed.   All the detailing went well, just the coal rails had to be carefully done so they meet exactly central at the rear.

Despite all the work going with the floors I have done a bit on the SDX.  The loco chassis caused no problems at all just following the instructions for a change.

At last a day on the WB and some progress on the SDX.   The ABC motor unit is quite large for this smallish loco but just fitted albeit with only 1mm to spare.

The body is now well under way.  The hole for the dome is 11.5mm too far back, the boiler band covers most of the redundant hole and low melt solder takes care of the remainder of the hole.

The s/box wrapper is a tricky one, some chopping and filing sort that, the sand boxes hides the rest.

So onwards tomorrow.
