Ken, I've not been on the forum for a while so would have said earlier: shouldn't the strengthening rib for the cab roof be in the inside?

David

Er.  Looks like it should be:huh:.  That rib was not addressed in the instructions I had.  Thankfully an easy fix. Thanks David.

A start has been made on the next one.  This is a B5 (Fish Engine) The tender has been a straight forward build, (I've had a lot of practice on these), it's a Robinson 4000 gallon standard tender.

This morning started the loco chassis.  Checking the axle bushes saw them being spot on, not too often that happens I have to say. Usually minor adjustments are required.   (Maybe I'm getting the hang of this) :mosking:

A couple of days or so away from the WB now sees the chassis to the stage where I can start the body.

I hope I can proceed without to many interruptions this week.

The chassis was not difficult as there was very little fettling to get it running freely just by pushing it  without the motor.

Got the boiler sorted today. That went quite well too.  The rest will be mainly detailing now.  I have purchased a few nice kits to keep me happy until the new year:). Hopefully things will get better soon.

Hopefully things will get better for many!! I'm lucky because I'm  a key worker, still flying Covid PPE around the world, but I sympathise with people struggling in these times. Keep the building thread going Ken, as I, like many enjoy following your work.

Regards and stay safe

Slowly did it,  now ready for a good clean and priming.  Then fitting motor & pickups. The kit had many options provided and took a bit of sorting out which options went with which loco. This is where good photos of the prototype loco boat are modelling.

Whilst awaiting for the current miserable weather to pass I've caught up on some number plates, weathering and completion of a couple of my own locos.

Here we see 517 class 1162 joining 848 by the goods shed.  She is a bit mucky too. Note the subtle differences in the two locos.

Always a favourite locomotive of mine Ken, I have the Mitchell kit to make at some point and finish off a conversion of the 14xx Dapol model which isn't quite correct but its been a nice exercise ( no one will ever notice ! :o ).

I pinched the extra cab etch from the kit to use on the Dapol loco which saves a lot of faffing about with scratch building.

Graham, that butchery really looks the part. I have seen other 14xx locos converted to 517's but not as good looking as yours. Excellent work. :good:

Thank you Ken its very much appreciated.

Hi. The B5 is now ready for the off in primer.  I'm now doing another one for Trenruth, this is the 88D Models  GWR 87 class (Rebuild of the AP Class loco.  This is the first kit I've tackled using 3D printed parts. Quite impressed with them, no cleaning up and a perfect fit, especially noticeable with the brake gear.

I'm using their compensation system on the leasing drivers although I'm still not a fan of it.  Sadly the kit was missing the four square slotted axle bushes. I did not call them about it as I had four normal bushes that fitted perfectly and at the correct ride height too.

The motor set up will have to be set at the correct angle when the body is under way.

Very interested to see the use of 3D parts Ken, I'm currently assembling a chassis is for an Armstrong Goods ( Scorpio ) and would like to know where you obtained them from please.

I tend to use fine screws to attach my brake gear to the chassis for removal before painting and also easier to remove for servicing.

By using the 3D printed brake gear it also helps with isolating them...just in case.

Hi Grahame. 88D use 3D parts in their kits. Agree that shorting out is eliminated. Ken

Thank you Ken, I did think ( makes a change ! )  after asking you and looked at the 88D web site and noted they are supplied as part of the kit.

This is this afternoons work sorting out the running of my Armstrong Goods chassis using a Taff Vale motor and gearbox, running on DC to make sure its ok. Onwards and upwards and thank you again for your help.

A bit more done today.   Going fairly well but needing a few minor alterations to get the rather large flywheel in.  Plus a couple of small alterations to get some etches to fit correctly.  Other than that it's not going to stop another purchase.

This is the prototype I'm modelling by in GWR livery.

I have been building the closely related Brecon & Merthyr 45 class from the same stable.

Not quite there as dome was missing.

The 3D printing is much better than I thought it would be.

The most obvious striations are on the splashers.  The chimney is good.

I found the fit to be excellent and the 3D springs and brakes are well worth pursuing for other projects.

Todays session sees the most trickiest part of the build, the s/box and boiler. Exacerbated by having to chop a fair bit out of the rear of the boiler for the large flywheel. This unit was made up of four etches. So turned out quite good I think.

That's it except for the roof.  It does need a really good scrubbing as the annealing has made it look a right mess. (Being nickel silver it was too much for by rollers to cope with as it was a quite hard metal)

I added the tool boxes from my spares box as  No 79 had them also did not fit the spare lamp irons by the splashes, again it did not have them fitted.

I think it's a nice looking prototype and looking forward to purchasing the County class from Mike after the Christmas rush.

I found rolling the tops of my "45" tanks impossible without some serious annealing.

Looked horrible but cleaned up

I hate having to anneal for that very reason. But sometimes it has to be done.

It's all but finished, just the usual crew, coal, glazing, couplings and a little weathering around the brakes and firebox pan. It's turned into a useful and pleasing loco.

Love the way the large flywheel make it roll a few millimetres. I will be looking at doing that to more of my stock.
