RMweb Gold Regularity Posted July 17, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2021 As you said previously, Ken, the secret is a powerful and hit (but not too hot) iron so you can be in and out before there is much transmission of heat away from the join, to reduce the possibility of melting white metal components or of decomposing cyanoacrylate.
jazz
Weather too nice out to spend much time on the WB today. I did notice that I had got the front and rear chassis spacers the wrong way round (another senior moment). They were quickly swopped around. Then a bi t more done on the body, with no mistakes
jazz
This afternoon spent assembling the firebox/boiler/smokebox. Not to be done without a fair bit of filing and adjustments but got there in the end. A heavy weight was also added inside the boiler. 12 1
jazz
That's most of it built. Just the cab roof to make up and fit plus the coupling tender to loco. There is a very small amount filling to do as well. 11
jazz
The Dean goods is now completed and ready for delivery. I'm very pleased with the build it went very well. There are a small amount of adjustments to be made during the build and can be expected on any etched kits I guess. 15 2

jazz
Hi. The text for the above went missing during an edit. So here it is. This is a Taff Vale Models ex Taff Vale Class V kit. I thought it would be a simple kit to build, I couldn't have been more wrong. There is very little to assist in the etches for alignments making the saddle tank very tricky to get squared up. Same with the splasher tops, a half etch along the inside rear edge would have been a great help. There is no cab floor etch, so made one from scrap offcuts. I am about to start the detailing now so it should be better sailing.. Anyhow here it is so far as seen above. jazz
Just the lamp irons and backhead to sort. Plus a fair amount of filling gaps and a lot of cleaning up on this one. Here it is so far. 11
jazz
As you can see, got the primer done. Next is to get the chassis running. The livery is to be GWR green. 11

Having constructed well over 500 kit locos, experience plays a huge part plus learning quick ways of construction which very often means ignoring the instruction sheets build sequences.

jazz
After a very enjoyable break in the midlands on the heritage railways, castles, Rutland Water and black country museum, I've now painted the TVR V class. (Been enjoying the comfy chair as well) Number plates to be ordered. 15
jazz
This week sees the start on a David Andrews 'Jubilee' kit. Nothing new, I've built a few in the past and there are photos of them on these pages.

jazz
I've now got the chassis underway. This is the most trickiest part of the build by far. I spent some time getting all the swingy/slidey parts to operate smoothly. The coupling rods all fitted perfectly with no tweaking. (I am now using the Poppies Builder Blocks, (they work very well in getting everything true) Edited August 16, 2021 by jazz 10 2
jazz
I've been slowly continuing with the Jubilee Class. I had a bit of a problem with the heavy weight soft soldered in to the boiler. It became unsoldered whilst adding some of the detailing. (That's never happened to me before) Of of course that entailed pulling it apart and rebuilding it All's well now though. 9 3
jazz
Just had a great week in Cumbria. Did the Ravenglass/Eskdale Railway, The costal train from Carlisle (where we were staying) to Ravenglass. Also the Settle to Carlisle. Not to mention all the other places we visited. A very packed holiday. Now ready to get the Jubilee stripped and it needs a really good clean up. (The wheels were quite rusted up straight from the pack). So onwards and forwards. 9
