A start made on the next loco. This is another vintage one, Chowbent Pettigrew 0-6-0. Many parts are missing from the kit and awaiting replacements.

Definitely not a well designed kit at all.

Having a good gripe about it later.;)

A quite basic kit in many ways.  There are no half etch groves to assist in positioning the parts.  Most notable along the running plates for the valences and attaching the boiler/smoke box/firebox etches.   Cannot progress much further until I have the the missing parts .

I got all the missing items on Tuesday and have now completed the Pettigrew D5 ex FR loco.

(Will have to straighten the coal rail in the tender before packing into the box.  They are rather delicate.)

Right, a little story.  Many, many moons ago I was a member of the Merseyside Model Railway club. Happy in the TT section. One night I wandered into the 0 gauge section down in the basement and was really taken with it. It was not long before I was invited to operate on their layout at the annual exhibition. I was asked to operate a delightful little tank loco in the shunting yard. Two very happy days at the task and that little loco has remained in my heart ever since.

The upshot was when I saw the CRT kit of that little loco I bought. It arrive here a couple of weeks ago and here she is under way. The loco GWR 1361 class 0-6-0 saddle tank.

Now for the kit,  had I taken a look at the review I found on line of the 1366 class from CRT, I would most likely give it a miss. Was a pigs ear it is. Hardly any is right and does not fit.  I'm persevering with it and hope it looks alright when finished. The chassis is identical to the 1366 and all the problems associated with that is replicated on the 1361. (If you are interested is worth researching the CRT 1366 kit review, it's an interesting read.)

The body has similar problems including poor resin castings and the white metal is full of pinholes.

This is the last CRT I will have.

Ken

i purchased the CRT 1361 and 1366 together years ago.  The 1361 remains to be built.  1366 was built, to, I hope, a decent standard, which required re-making (amongst other bits) a new chimney, dome & sv cover, smoke box saddle, motion plate, cylinder block, brakes, and probably some other stuff too.  I will build the saddle tank one day.

its not necessarily better elsewhere, Chris (Pencarrow) tried to build the Agenoria one - that too was a dogs breakfast - happily the Agenoria range is now part of Ragstone and is being revised.

I’ll follow your build with interest, please post lots of details!

good luck

Simon

It's been a tedious day making good the resin castings.  I was close to deciding to dump them and scratch build them. After spending a good while fiddling wit them to try to get them squared off and smooth off the imperfections I decided to use them.

Next was searching my spares boxes for decent lamp irons. I found nice GWR ones. Then looking for a pair of brass vac pipes. The whistles were from the spares box too.

The ejectors provided are a bit of a comprise. I did some minor mods to them and made them acceptable (for me anyway).  I did not fancy scratch building them anyway.

Getting the tank to sit right was very fiddly. I decided to solder two small supports to the sides of the etched firebox sides. This worked well for super glueing the saddle tank in place.

On with the battle tomorrow.

Not sure you'll thank me for saying this but I think the curve of the saddle tank not matching the cab windows and possibly the smoke box would annoy me!

Yes, I've been looking at that. The opposite window is OK. The problem is the tank having an uneven curve. The problem is a slight bulge by the window, the bottom of the tank is spot on. I am going to shave a little off the curve by the window and that will lessen the fault.

On top of it now.  Drilled out the chimney and safety valve bonnet which were almost solid and looked awful. Also dumped the actual safety valves and replaced them with lost wax ones from the spares box.  Also sorted out the saddle tank. Had shave off some by the cab window and Also shave off the under side of both sides to get rid of the distinct taper down the the from end.

About the only thing right in the kit was the introduction stating the kit is not intended as a show case model:rolleyes:

Shame that was not stated on the box lid as a heads up.

Anyway not much left to do. Cab interior, buffers, again they are being replace as theirs are very poor castings.  Finally the sandboxes and s/box lamp iron.  Then a really good clean up and some minor filling in to do. Hopefully I will get the painting under way tomorrow.

On reading the review of the kit build you mentioned above !! you have made a cracking job of yours , well done .

Thanks Mick.  It's been a bit of a chore but almost there now.

It's too lake in the day to start the painting now. It was amazing how many things I found to make and add to it. (I still have found the left ejector needs a small tweak looking at the photo)

Still tomorrow will mean I can devote to clean up and painting.

After that will be the LMS turbine loco. Another big build.

Most of the painting is done, just picking out things like the whistles (Just don't like them in black). The usual weathering down, glazing, ect ect.

The backhead needs a modification painting and fitting.

The 1833 motor would not fit. So chopped away a small amount of the cab floor which means shaving off some of the backhead. So all was not lost and a lot less expensive that punching a smaller motor/gearbox.

tomorrow will complete the painting and the number plates will now wait until the new year.

She run quiet and smooth so very pleased with the outcome.

Just showing the modification I used when using a Roxey gear box and 1833 motor.

Shows the cut-a-way floor and the chamfer on the rear of the backhead.

Ignor the dust on the motor, the photo makes it look really bad^_^

One final photo of 1362 all lightly dirtied up, coaled, crewed and just waiting for number plates and fitting the Dinghams.

Now it's on with the LMS Turbo loco.  This will be an interesting build I think. Starting with the tender, just a regular Gladiator job, only difference will be a tool box on the rear.

And straight tender steps with roller bearing axle boxes I hope too!

Tender is now finished.  The loco chassis is also as go as done. A lot easier build with no cylinders and valve gear. A few differences over the normal Princess class chassis.  Otherwise the normal Gladiator build.
