Now ready to get the Jubilee stripped and it needs a really good clean up. (The wheels were quite rusted up straight from the pack).  So onwards and forwards.

Hello Ken, glad that you've managed to have a good holiday in Cumbria, a place that I need to explore more.

Regarding the rust on the wheels, once cleaned up how will you stop it returning, please. We've had similar issues with some but not all wheels provided by the 3mm Society.

I also once built a nickel silver chassis for an 04 diesel that the axles rusted up solid in the bearings but I suspect that this was more to do with me not cleaning off the flux thoroughly after soldering.

Regards,

Ian.

Hi Ian.   I find the wheels and axles will rust up just by being in the same room as the soldering is done caused by the flux.  So I keep them in a plastic bag or box. It becomes a problem when using a set of wheels to to fit the brakes.   I will then us a thin coat of masking fluid.

The other problem is when opening a new pack wheels and find them rusted as happened in this build. I use medium grit sandpaper and spin them in the drill.  Final polish up with the glass fibre brush.    I make sure the axles have a coat of light oil on them.   The tyres on the wheels also have a thin coat light oil (After painting the rims).  All my locos are left on the layout shelves in the integral garage and never rust up again.  No problem with current pick either.

Ken,

I found that the fixing of the bogies to the tender body works better if you open out the holes in the bogies to take a 4mm scale 1/8" axle bearing. You can then tighten the 6BA screw through that.

Dave

Thanks David, that makes a lot of sense.

Got most of the tender done today.  Yesterday very little done on the WB,  I purchased a DVD player for the new 'All In One' desk top the does not have a DVD slot.  Spent most of the day setting it up and getting my head round it. (I'm not a techno wizz on these these)

Anyway here's the tender so far.

At last almost there now.  The deflectors are removable for painting.   I just have the cab to area to finish and add the cylinder drain pipes plus the small inspection plates on the cylinder sides. Then it's the clean up and paint shop.    After that add motor, pickups and finish the valve gear.  So a fair bit to do as yet.

The past few days have been spent building the Taff Vale Models  Ex Taff Vale loco rebuilt class A 0-6-2 tank.

Not as easy as the previous kits from that stable but getting there in the end. It was the tanks that caused a problem getting them just right. Then the smokebox saddle and splasher components required some work as they seemed to be designed for 7 scale. (there was mention of this in the instructions)

Hi. It would have been ready for the paint shop today. I ran into some issues with the topfeed/safety valves.

Called Susan at Taff Vale Models and she is ordering and sending replacement castings. So it will be a few days waiting.

Hi. While I'm waiting for the castings to finish the ex Taff Vale loco, I've started the Mercian Models LNWR Renown 4-4-0. Thankfully there is a build of it on RM web which is very useful, the instructions are not a great deal of help that's provided in the kit.  There are a few alterations required that this build discovered.

So it's onwards and forwards.

A start has been made on the loco now.  The past couple of days spent getting the bogie to operate smoothly, not very easy.

Our daughter has arrived from the States for a holiday with us, so the WB comes to a halt for a while.

Yesterday I started the painting of the Taff Vale Rebuilt A Class.  Taff Vale Models kindly replaced the safety valve bonnet and top feed casting for a more appropriate one.   (I can thoroughly recommend Taff Vale Models, they are very helpful and their kits are good too.)

Here is the Class A ready for finishing off with glazing, crew, coal, Dingham couplings and a bit of light weathering.
