That's looking rather nice!

I agree about Taff Vale Models, I've just built one of their Hibberd 'Planet' kits in 7mm scale, which was really well thought out and a pleasure to build.

I do like the look of that little loco.  It's a shame I cannot find an excuse to use on my layout:unsure:

All done exept to add black to the Dinghams.    I added some lead weight to the side tanks so it's a fairly heavy loco now.

That's as far as I can go for the time being. Geoff  has found some etches in his scrap box and is sending me some  for the cab steps for me to fabricate them. (They were missing from the Mercian kit)

Still a bit to go with a touch of filling gaps etc.

To add, this is not a kit for the faint hearted.  The big problem is there are no clearances for the driving wheels. The etched holes in the running plate has to be lengthened for them taking them to extremities for the slashers.  The firebox will also need metal removed to clear the wheels. The chassis is too long and care has to be taken how much has to be removed from the front and rear, this will mean drilling new fixing holes, making sure the axles remain centered on the splashers.  A lot of metal has to be removed from the cab front and cab splasher areas to clear the wheels and there cannot be any side play in the rear wheels.   The cab sub floor will need a large hole made to clear the gear box.  These are some of the main alterations, there are few other to do as well.

Yesterday PM spent queueing in the rain for my booster jab. A sore arm today but got the chassis painted and up and running.  You can see the chomping required on the body to make it fit the chassis.  Just now waiting for the step etches to see what needs doing to them to fit this loco. Of course there is some tidying up of all that chomping away now I've had it running with the body on the chassis.

Forgive my ignorance Ken but is the coiled wire that I can see between the motor and 'middle' wheel a homemade spring for the compensation beam or something else ? (I can see that there is the same arrangement on the near side as well.)

Regards,

Ian.

Hi Ian.  The leading driver has my usual springing, this one in downwards movement only due to it being a 4 coupled loco.  The red wire is to hold the motor in place against the spacer in front of it.

Thanks Ken, having just had a little nap before looking at your photo again I'm now pretty sure that what I am looking at is part of the plunger pick up system which on studying it is more obvious on the near side. Another very neat looking chassis, I must say.

Regards,

Ian.

The steps arrived today and where the ones used on the tender front.  After a bit of adjustment I got them looking very much like the prototype ones.  I think the loco body will need lifting up of the chassis a bit though, the running plate is a bit too low.

That's the Renown done.   A session on the rolling road and it's on with the next loco.  Looks better with the loco raised a little to match the tender. As Simon said, that's an easy fix.:good:(The chimney is not permanently fix yet that's why it looks a little off upright))

Onwards with the next build.

Now for a Slater's kit, I have not built one of theirs for decades.  So here we go.  The chassis is completed, it took quite a bit of fiddling to get the crossheads to run smoothly but they are fine now.   The axle bushes are sprung using small springs in hornguides, again it's decades since I used that method of springing.  It's riding a bit high in the photo as it will need the body to compress the springs.

It will need all the visible solder removing before painting.

A good start on the body with no problems so far other than the firebox did not line up with the fixing holes in the rear of the boiler. I just shaved a little off the base of it (firebox) and all was OK.

Had a great day out yesterday and an amazing restaurant meal. We needed that break.  Anyway back to the WB today and good progress made.

Getting down to the detailing now.

With the exception of the tank handrails all the detailing is complete.  I rather like this little loco, shame it will not be right on my layout.

On with the completion and paint shop tomorrow.

Now for a real oldie. A JM kit,  it's proper old school. Currently making up the valve gear from all those bits seen on the right.  Quite a tedious job it is too.

Chassis done as far as I can prior tp painting.  I cannot remove the valve gear to get at the front drivers. It looks like I will have to paint the chassis with them in place. Not a very well designed chassis at all.

Onwards now with the body.  A little easy than the chassis proved out to be.  There was a fair bit of tweaking and rebending for the front lower footplate. The curves were the issue as they had to be really spot on.

Not a lot left to do on now.  shame there is no backhead castings or reverser casting supplied in the kit.  You do get a bare backhead etc., a couple of tool boxes and brake standard, that's it for the cab.

Here it is so far. A fair bit of cleaning up and some filling in to do yet though.

Just cobbled together the backhead using castings from a Jubilee kit, (to be replaced in due course). These included the reverser castings as well.

I have also just fitted it to the cab.  It will be a bit tricky for the painter I guess but could not be helped in this instance.
