HSB
Some of the pictures appear to show locos and coaches in two different scales. I assume the smaller ones are the original 5mm scale models.

rue_d_etropal
I am considering coming over. It is a lot easier to get to than some of the narrow gauge events held. I can bring a selectionof the items I have done myself, as well as items I have sourced elsewhere.
detheridge
Hi again folks, many thanks to Max Brayne for posting these on the Facebook page, and I'm adding them here for anyone who's not signed up to the group. This is state of the 5.5mm art - 50 years ago! The Gem catalogue pages show (nearly) the entire range. Dolgoch appeared a few months later, and if memory serves, Linda appeared the following year. Best wishes, David. Edited July 29, 2016 by detheridge
RMweb Premium DLT Posted July 29, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 29, 2016 At the age of nine, I remember badgering my Mother to buy me a kit of Dolgoch, on display in the shop and Towyn Wharf. She had a fit when told it was over five pounds! It was explained to us that it was a metal kit with a motor to make into a working model. We had both thought it was an Airfix type kit for a few bob! Dave.

Southwold
I remember the 'Dermic' oiler. I'm sure it would be very popular with numerous applications today!
detheridge
Several rather well known characters in 5.5mm scale: George Williamson generated plenty of interest at Blaenau Ffestiniog's 1940 do this weekend with a well known loco linked to the late Rev Awdrey. Here's the 5.5mm scale stand with the legendary Peter Blackham (of transfers fame) and George on the right.
detheridge
And just to show how creative you can be on a budget in 5.5mm scale, here's Malcolm Savage's before and after pics of a Triang starter wagon!

detheridge
Many thanks to Francis Stapleton for pics from Amberley in July showing his layouts. Tom's Boatyard was originally built by Tom Snook. Edited August 2, 2016 by detheridge
detheridge
A recent article from Narrow Gauge World on 5.5mm scale. Thanks as ever to Malcolm Savage for the pics.
detheridge
Something a little different: here are some pics of Don Sibley's Willowdale layout, which is in 6mm scale on 18.2mm gauge. Quirky, and very fine modelling throughout. Thanks as ever to Mick Thornton and others for the pics.
rue_d_etropal
nice layout.3ft gauge is sadly not modelled enough. 6mm/ft always strikes me as odd, except for it being an architectural scale - 1/50 . Now in 1/55 using 16.5mm gauge, which is about as accurate as you are going to get using r2r stuff....
Jeff Smith
A few 7mm PECO items in evidence on Don's 6mm layout - however near enough not to look out of place - even when the station master is a 6ft badger.......and the coal office is run by equally large rodents. Quite charming!
detheridge
Here's another example of 3' modelling in 5.5mm scale: Steve Jones' Pennant (more than a little reminiscent of the R&ER in it's original form.

detheridge
Here are some pics from the 5.5m AGM yesterday. Many thanks to the redoubtable George Williamson for the pics, as my camera was a bit temperamental on what it wanted to focus on! Max Brayne's Double Fairlie has DCC and authentic sound, the WD 4-6-0 amd De Winton are his as well. George Williamson's TR locos, stock and layout are there, Steve Jones was showing his models of the Ratty in 3' gauge and 18", Malcolm Savage shows a range of chassis, and the FR Linda is the first production Linda kit through the FR's Portmadoc shop in the 60s, revved up with brass frames and built by FR supremo Andy Savage. The building is Maespoeth shed under construction. The model of Gowrie is also by Max Brayne, using a 3D body on a chopped Tillig 2-8-2 chassis. All terrific fun and great models!

RMweb Gold tractionman Posted October 14, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 14, 2016 Seeing all this, especially the Fairy Glen Railway 18" gauge models above, has inspired me to rejoin the 5.5mm Association! Time to get my 5.5mm scale figures out again and some old 009 track I think... cheers, Keith
