East Coast Mainline Blockade for Werrington Junction diveunder

Recommended Posts

My friend Trackside ECML has been out and about this afternoon.

Lincoln Road is looking a right mess.  The electric cabling has been done.  The water signposts on the right have been re-instated, and the verge landscaped ,

I can see the black covers for the water valves in the right foreground have the potential to be a slippery safety hazard for cyclists in the future as they are next to the dropped kerb where the road meets the footpath/cycleway to Davids Close.

The green pipes are still empty so I suppose the telecoms people will soon be along to dig up more road to put their cables in.

Not much has been done towards Glinton Junction.

DSC_1493c.jpg.485fabf73c4acc982545bb50d5f06b5c.jpg

Then looking a bit closer we can see concrete trunking has appeared to the left of the drainage.

The brickwork to tie in the two bridges is still to be completed.

On to Cock lane and the wooden fencing appears to have completed its mystery alignment around the footbridge..

Finally a quick visit to Walton where it seems slow progress with the work to lay an access entrance beside the footbridge.

I had a trip out this afternoon with the intention of doing a video update but there was nothing to really see that was worth doing.

The brickies were doing Lincoln Road bridge abutments and some largish stone was being put in to make the embankment between the temporary footbridge and the new Lincoln Road bridge but that was inaccessable to point a camera at.

At Cock Lane the fencing gang have moved over to the west side and were starting to put up the green fencing near the steps.

At Hurn Road the land bridge between the cutting and dive under is earmarked to be removed at the beginning of May.  The ground in the cutting the other side of it has to be raised nearly two metres to tie in with the trackbed this side.

IMG_7662_stitchc.jpg.c40b131d03ed252cb82f9bb77789a83d.jpg

Plenty of spoil and rubbish in the field to the north of Hurn Road.

IMG_7666c.jpg.bcf87c61175a486f81ce2f3ed4f5f821.jpg

Looking down Hurn Road towards the ECML.  The concrete blocks with chevrons that were placed there a few weeks ago are a safety feature to stop any vehicles from going through the fence and on to the railway.  They are also doing a good job of making it awkward for cyclists coming down the bridge.

Apparently these concrete blocks are being placed in a lot of locations around the country where there could be road and rail conflict.  I have been told there are some at Waterworks Lane where the road and rail fencing are very close.

IMG_7668c.jpg.69a588f741c685ee2b8458305f8e60dd.jpg

At Hurn Road footbridge the scaffolding that was erected to give access from the top of bridge down into the wide way for track workers has all been removed.  That is much better for photos straight down the Up Stamford now there is no obstruction.  There is still quite a bit to infill where the van sits.

Good afternoon all, needed to break the boredom so I've been for a walk and taking some pictures.

I started at the Walton end, the first thing that surprised me was how close these cables were to the surface.

IMG-9869.jpg

IMG-9866.jpg

The steel shuttering for the side of the slab has been placed roughly where it needs to go.

IMG-9867.jpg

I wonder what they will do about these drain access covers and the big slab they are set in.

IMG-9868.jpg

The switches for Marholm Junction are still there awaiting installation.

IMG-9870.jpg

Moving on to Cock Lane footbridge next and looking south we can see piles of sleepers behind the digger, and rail near the ECML lines, I wonder how soon they will start laying the new up Stamford alignment.

IMG-0103.jpg

Turning round and looking north the reception pit looks as if it has almost been covered over now. Very quiet all round, a couple of hi vis kitted guys are just cisible in the centre of the frame.

IMG-0100.jpg

Looking into the approach ramp there is little to note, it looks pretty much as it did a couple of weeks ago.

IMG-0101.jpg

And just pulling back from the zoomed in view.

IMG-0102.jpg

And now to the area around the footbridge - Mick mentioned a gate going in here, doesn't look like it now, the centre rail is a bit of a patchwork though.

IMG-9871.jpg

Can't get away from these cherry pickers it seems. Still one on site.

IMG-9872.jpg

Spotted this pair of gennys alongside the new Up Stamford alignment.

IMG-9873.jpg

A wider view looking south, again little change in the foreground compared with a couple of weeks ago.

IMG-9874.jpg

And another wider view looking north.

IMG-9875.jpg

Then I spotted that someone had been doodling on the sub ballast layer just north of the footbridge.

IMG-9876.jpg

And there is this switch nose casting sitting just north of the footbridge on the eastern side too.

IMG-9877.jpg

Not far away are these hollow steel sleepers used for cabling runs under the track just lying around. Brand new too by the look of them.

IMG-9878.jpg

Moving up to Lincoln Road the new brickwork is up to parapet level on the eastern side.

IMG-9879.jpg

And this large stone has been placed into gullys cut into the flank of the bridge embankment presumably to provide drainage.

IMG-9880.jpg

IMG-9881.jpg

IMG-9882.jpg

And on the western side the brickwork is also up to parapet level.

IMG-9883.jpg

They are also using stone and aggregate to build up the flank embankment alongside the road.

IMG-9884.jpg

Looking south over Lincoln Road bridges. No machinery here now.

IMG-9886.jpg

And over at Hurn road footbridge the AS&T guys (or whatever they are called these days) have a birds nest of wiring/fibre optic cables to tidy up (we hope).

IMG-9885.jpg

Looking south the reception pit looks as if it is almost completely covered and the infill completed, I don't think the pile of sand and ballast would fill that big an area. Also the guys in hi vis mentioned earlier can be seen here, one looked to me as if he was lying down on the job :-)

Pity they couldn't have use imperial compatible bricks

We had our porch rebuilt about 5 years ago and the bricks are hybrids being the same length and depth as metric ones but the height is as imperial so you can tie them into existing (old) brickwork

Both panels are metric brick, The older abutment was rebuilt about 10(?) years ago.

Metric brick sizes were adopted in 1974/5. While you can still source Imperial bricks the cost is a minimum of 50-60% more and not all patterns are catered for (mainly soft reds and London Stocks)

You should get bored more often Richard, then we will get to see more photos.:good:

There is no access now to the whole fenced off area unless you climb over the fence, so probably a change of plan or a gate is to be made off site.

Did you see the notice on the fence?  The footbridge is to be closed for the whole weekend of 10th April.  It was originally going to be closed for Saturday evening only and Sunday evening only.

That arrived in the middle of the week.  It is probably to replace one on the Up Slow at the Junction.  It has been quite a rough ride over the Junction on the Up Slow for quite some time.

These bits just keep getting moved about the site.  Bits of old rail, green bits that came off the footbridge, there is the ubiquitous shopping trolley lurking near by, and then there is a 20ft length of rail between the footpath and Werrington Brook, now fenced off so it is impossible to retrieve it.  The tidiness of the railway in general is a disgrace.

Here is another example.  The supports of the old green footbridge that was dismantled in late 2019.  Why weren't they completely removed?  That is what the subcontractor was paid for, but they have took the easy option with a torch and even left two other smaller parts that could easily have been picked up.

The "birds nest" of cables actually looks quite neat compared to a lot of examples around the network. It looks like the 3 or 4 smaller SCT to the left of the main route will house the 3 "jointed" cables (to keep the joints out of the main route). The cables will be "broken out" of the main route, laid in the smaller troughing, and then "broken back in" to the main route. Well, that will be the plan, but time will tell if it ever happens. Perhaps I'm being a little unkind here to the people on the project, but I've seen it so many times where the little things like this get forgotten about by the time the project closes and everyone moves on to the next job.

The notices on the fences (they were in two places) have been ripped off, the only thing there is the map portion which is visible in one of my pictures. The staples for the written part of the notice are still embedded in the rail.

I’m sure the cables will be tidied up,

the local guys will not be happy if I’d left like this.

Looking at this picture again you can see the heads of the lights laid on the ground. The fact that they have now got them on posts suggests some evening work is close and that is, most probably, tracklaying as suggested.

Got some green fence along the footpath to the first ramp on the west side of Cock Lane footbridge

Then yesterday within an hour or so this section in no mans land was put up to the west of the Stamford Line.  I didn't go over the bridge to have a look but it appears to be along the edge of the haul road set back quite a way from the track. EDIT: you can just see it in the next photo on the extreme right centre.

Down at Hurn Road today the trackbed of the Up Stamford is being completed between the reception pit and the dive under entrance.  Although the telephoto lens distorts the distance. it is quite a gap that is being filled between the reception pit and the dive under entrance.  All day yesterday and today they have been filling it with ballast causing huge clouds of dust.

There has also been some new sleepers laid on the trackbed towards Cock Lane.

More sleepers laid overnight.

The supply is coming in at the Walton end where they are laid out then the 'crab' picks a set up at the correct spacing to transport them down the new track bed.

The last of the fencing atop of the left hand side of the sheet piling is now being done.

The piece of fencing to the west of the Stamford Lines that I mentioned a couple of days ago looking very lonely.

They have also cut out sections for patching the existing haul road.

A bit annoyed today. Text at 11:50 saying blood donors ar 14:10 was cancelled due to staff issues. I was going to go over after blood donors so everything else was brought forward ...

Starting at Cock Lane footbridge looking south we have an indifferent photo showing that there are sleepers being readied for placing out. The rig fitted to the digger is for lifting and spacing several sleepes at once whilst the spider like machine on the left is used to position rails.

IMG-0114.jpg

Turning to look north we can see what the 'scribbles' on the ballast were - guidelines for positioning the sleepers.

IMG-0111.jpg

And on the other side of the dive under approach ramp the railings are now being completed. There is still ballast forming an obstacle course though when you look at the ramp itself.

IMG-0112.jpg

Seemed to be some sort of meeting or briefing going on at the north end of the site.

IMG-0113.jpg

Moving up to Hurn Road footbridge it looks much the same as the view Donnington Road posted a couple of days ago.

IMG-0106.jpg

Across now to Lincoln Road where work was going on in a number of places.

They have dedicated smoking areas on the site complete with a bucket for the dog ends!

IMG-0110.jpg

Approaching the footbridge from Davids Close it seems that they have had the road paint out to mark out where kerbs etc are going.

IMG-9894.jpg

And under the bridge it has dried out to the extent that the ground is showing shrinkage cracks on the surface. No sign of mud anywhere!

IMG-9895.jpg

Moving down to the bridle path I suggest we make the most of the next month as the pallisade fencing is going in early in May along the edge of the bridleway, the only clear view of the works, according to my source, will be from the A15 bridge. Currently there is some work going on to build up the northern side of the cutting by the bridge abutment.

IMG-9896.jpg

They are cutting drainage channels in this side as well.

IMG-9901.jpg

Cable trunking is being laid towards the dive under box.

IMG-9898.jpg

Steps have appeared to the east of the A15 bridge now as well.

IMG-9897.jpg

And there are nice neat manhole covers either side of the bridge where drains come down from above.

IMG-9900.jpg

IMG-9899.jpg

The majority of work at present is actually in the box itself and the reception pit area so out of sight for us.
