East Coast Mainline Blockade for Werrington Junction diveunder

The drainage at Hurn Road where the Up Stamford will be slewed to the left seems to take a strange alignment.

Machinery has amassed at Cock Lane ready for installing Marholm Junction that starts tonight.

The remaining offices at the main site are being dismantled.

These chaps were digging a hole next to the new Up Stamford and inserting some device.

A few weeks ago we were discussing how equipment could reach the area where the relay room is next to the dive under as there was very little room between the top of the dive under and the ECML.  Seeing this dumper negotiating that manouvre it appears there is enough room for access afterall.  The dumper is taking topsoil from Hurn Road (shown previously in Crun's photos) for lining the embankment on the south side where the land bridge once was.

Had pleasant afternoon around Hurn Road and Lincoln Road chatting with Richard Elms and putting the world to right as you do, thank you Richard.

That’s not flytippers, it’s the work of the PE4 Wombles, a voluntary litter picking group. PCC will have been notified and asked to pick up the bags

That is good to know Nick and well done to the local Wombles for their good work.:good:

However, leaving it in such a prime dumping place for such a long time is only going to attract the attention of undesirables to add to it in the future.  To my knowledge it has been there now for well over a week so it is about time the Council got their finger out before all that good work is undone.

It gives better visibilty into the lorry you are loading so the load is spread evenly. It also means the bucket can be lowered into the wagon rather than having to drop it from a height as the arm would hit the side if the digger was at ground level.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh!

Beautiful weather all week, then when it comes to shutdown and a bit of action the heavens open.:angry:

I was really surprised with the amount of work that had been done overnight.

First  a visit to Cock Lane, the new signal for the Up Stamford has been erected over Werrington Brook.

The existing Up Stamford has been severed and the area has been ballasted and tamped down.  Everyone is having rest whilst waiting for the railcrane to bring the first switch panel into place.

Looking towards Hurn Road the Up Stamford looks as though it has been slewed across already.

On to Walton to see how Marholm Junction is progressing.  Not very good trying to get decent photos here through the thick mesh fencing of the footbridge.

After cycling home to dry out I decided to get in the car this time and venture to Hurn Road.

The track is in place and it is just a case of waiting for the ballast trains to do their bit.

It was going to be at least another hour or more before there was going to be any movement and the camera and I were getting wetter so I decided to call it a day.  Shame really because it would have been nice to have got some more video footage.

The train on the left - Down Stamford - was carrying used ballast, sand and old sleepers.  It was having to be checked by two crew members along the length of the train before it is allowed to leave.  Consequently, the ballast trains are not allowed to move while people are in the six foot.  There are two ballast trains, the rear one being top and tailed.

Whenever we want to move track panels into place in the UK we use a proper device to do it.

I'm always amazed that in the US (seen on Virtual Railfan cameras) all they seem to use is some slings and a few "back-hoe" (JCB like) diggers and drag them into place over whatever might be in the way, with the track twisting and warping as it goes

I'm surprised the spikes don't come loose.

The most amazing things they use everywhere are those crawlers with side mounted hoists.  Watching them work in unison to re-rail toppled wagons, move structures or just manouvre rail track looks like a work of art.

Kirow crane in place having lifted the up switch into place, I assume it is about to lift one of the down switch panels now.

My take on the new signal - note the TPWS grid has already appeared. Signal ID is the same, iirc, as the signal that was on the temporary up line.

Thought I was going to find the Down Stamford severed and new switch panels in place this morning.  But no, still working on the Up Stamford switch.

Not much at Hurn Road end.  A few chaps doing bit of manual ballast packing.  The tamper doing its thing moving slowly towards Cock Lane and the rail brush clearing ballast off the top of the sleepers.

No trains running today, the OHE has all been isolated and the electrical gangs are out all over the place trackside, Walton, Foxcovert Road, Werrington Junction and here at Glinton Junction.

Here at Hurn Road they are still working in the old relay boxes which I thought may have become redundent considering the amount of new boxes that have been installed recently.

I don't know who took these photos that were sent to me.

Clearing up the signalling equipment from the Joint line.  It is a bit ironic that the signal in the middle background for the Down Main/Werrington Junction line was installed ten years ago and has never been commissioned, whilst the one in front of it must be nearer fifty years old.

The tamper at Werrington Brook on the Up Stamford.  I have been told that it has been having problems all day with stop/starting issues which is why it has taken such a long time to get the ballast tamped.
