Newton Harbour

Hi everyone.

Its been a while since I posted, or did any modelling to be honest, as spare time is very minimal these days. I am going to have to put the (larger layout of Newton Harbour) layout to one side for the foreseable future as I need the space in the house at this moment in time.

But do not despair, I am starting work on a smaller 'Newton Harbour' and will continue to use this thread for anybody who wishes to see the construction and building of it. I will upload a few photographs of the new layout to give an idea of what I want to achieve.

Firstly I will be having a 4ft turntable fiddle similar to the 3ft N gauge one as shown.

I will be running 3 different time scales...........end of steam early diesels 1966-1969, Early 70s (class 24 and 29 with the 20s, 26 &27s) and BR blue/ Sector 1985-1991.

The layout will have a harbour at the front (boats all ready to go). There will be a siding which will run between the harbour front and the old cold store, which will be used for storage of pallatised goods when the fish traffic stops!

The station will be a simple single face with a run round loop. Also there will be a siding behind the cold store, with a small holding siding alonside. There will only be 4 points on the layout, as the station throat is beyond the overbridge which hides the fiddle yard. (turntable).

The layout plan was taken from 'Roshven' from the book 'modelling British Rail'

The layout including the fiddle yard will be 10ft x 2ft. I have decided to go smaller, so I can actually get trains running and keep the layout out of the house in the conservatory. All buildings will be detachable so they wont deteriorate in the scarce hot weather which makes the conservatory seem like an oven !

Well thats it for now, off to build the 4 trestles for the baseboards.

Looks an interesting new project, should be good if the original version is anything to go by. That cold store looks rather good too.

Thanks Martin

Its been a very frustrating 3 months on the modelling front. My biggest headache at the moment is the station building. I have the Bachmann offering (the post war flat roof station) I was going to use on the original layout, but unsure as to how it will look on a smaller layout. I may need to have a good look around. I may post some photos of a few station buildings I have and see which comes across the best by the following public.

Love the canal scene on your layout, fits in superbly where you have added the extra board.

Thanks Simon, doing the canal has had its share of frustrations with trying to get a slightly wavey water surface in the loch, water 'lifting' at edges etc but its getting there slowly! Regarding the station building, that is a good idea as other eyes may see something that we have not thought of, it has given me food for thought with Crinan this week regarding the retaining wall etc.

Is it the building itself, or how it fits into the scene that is frustrating you?

Just to throw another idea into the mix, how about a small, covered fish auction near the cold store? Not seen that done before?

Cheers,

Martyn.

Hi Martyn

Its the station building thats causing me problems. I had thought of using the Ratio GWR kit as this is a stone building. Once all the detailing and painting is done it may just scrape a pass as a Scottish station building. I think even the Caley used brown for its paint colour on its buildings, but I may be mistaken. I have built a lazer wood kit building, which has brick facia, but im far from happy with it.

The idea of the fish auction is a good one, and as you say, rarely seen. If I can fit one in at the buffer stop end of the layout, just to the right of the cold store on the harbour wall as we look front on, I might just have a go at that one ! All this planning is taxing on the mind!

I've just bought a BR green class 26/0  from Hattons as they are selling some at £61 each !!! (tempted?)

I will post some photos of my 'N' gauge Ratio station building I am in the process of finishing at the moment. The 00 gauge one is slightly different, but they do make a decent model once painted and weathered.

Cheers

Simon

Nice work on that station building Simon, yes the 00 one is rather good too. How about adding end screens/walls under the canopy ends, I think that might add a nice Scottish flavour and give a different look without TOO much extra work? Just a thought!

And yes I have so far resisted one of those bargain 26's (Green sywp), only on account of them having the original exhaust arrangement, but I am weakening by the week!!!

It was too much to fight forever. . . I popped over to Hattons yesterday! :-)

Will probably become D5301 which ran in this livery into the 1970s, albeit I will need to swap the boiler tank for air brake equipment, re-site the exhaust port and make it somewhat dirtier than it is now. Or I could just respray it blue. Options. . .

Your station building is coming on a treat!

I hope you dont blame me for that one Martyn !!!

I wish I had the nerve to re-model the roof, but I'm afraid my skills fall well short on that front, so I will just weather it and paint the ploughs yellow, as I dont like them in black. My model was of D5317, so I may renumber to D5312 as this spent a lot of time around the Ayrshire coast. Recall seeing it in Blue at Carlisle around 1980 on a Glasgow-Carlisle service. I have a photo somewhere!

Will try and get some more of the station done this weekend if I get time.

Will be keeping an eye on your 26 project !

Haha, no Simon, I just weakened! The exhaust mods are not too demanding, namely 'capping' the original port with a disc of brass or plasticard and gluing 2 rectangles of plasticard (smaller one over a slightly larger one) in the new position (referring to the 27s I have) then drilling/filing out a slot - the top plasticard layer ends up as the exhaust lip. I think some of the other small vents on top of the roof should be plated over too by rights. . . in any case its easier than my original (not so bright) idea of making a 26/1 and carving 3 of the cantrail grilles off each side! The underslung air equipment in lieu of boiler tank could be fun to scratchbuild too I'm thinking. . . Unless I find a kit to do it.

On the other hand if I resprayed it 1970 blue condition I could choose one which retained the boiler tank such as you are doing so I will have a think, no hurry with this one! From trawling images online, so far D5301 is the only 26/0 I have seen which retained green livery into 1970/71.

Cheers,

Martyn.

Quick update on the station building. The roof has had its 2nd coat of paint. The front guttering and barge boards have been painted in Caledonian blue ( it was the only blue I had. Looks ok weathered) and the gents toilet block roof has been added with frosted glazing.

I do like the bubblecar, nice model !

Simon

Thanks Psiborg

Its the Hattons limited edition one. I wanted this as it covers a large period, although they have added 'Thunderbird 1' near the cab ends, which was added towards the end of its operational career I think...................out with the rubbing compound ! Also the centre light is a late addition, so really as it is , is only suitable for mid 80s onwards at the moment.

Just a word of warning to anyone who purchases a Dapol class 121/122 bubble car. The exhaust stacks on the end are very brittle as the are only plastic............I almost snapped one off unknowingly, but managed to glue it back onto the roof.

If adding any buffer beam or detailing , take the body off !!!

Lesson learned

New addition. For the 60s period. But damage done. The lower section of one of the side bogie frames had snapped off. 1st time this has happened to a Heljan 26/27 in my possession (10 so far ). So it was out with the super glue and stick it back on to the frame. Then to strengthen it , I stuck a small piece of plastic over the join on the rear. It's not noticeable when viewed from the front. When dry it will be touched up with brake dust to blend in. Last photo of the bogie is the good side!
