sir douglas
i tried painting clouds again but this time with a different method, the results was unsatisfactory so i painted over it but I also remixed the painted into a paler shade, and this time i'm not going to try the clouds but instead put the backscenes back onto the layout and carry on with the blue foam Deffors (152) by Sam, on Flickr and with the stuff back in place Deffors (151) by Sam, on Flickr
sir douglas
ive now decided what is going to fill the gap between the horse dock and the goods yard i only decided it after seeing this photo of Crofton station in a little book of west Yorkshire stations, i like the look of the station master's house and then thought that i could use it to fill the gap on my layout the crossing to the farm is in the foreground and is looking towards Pontefract relevant street view https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.6666099,-1.4413009,3a,75y,50.78h,87.61t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1shExKQ2tVLQ7xtbI-Cwq9MA!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo0.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3DhExKQ2tVLQ7xtbI-Cwq9MA%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D45.318302%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i13312!8i6656 my drawing based on the photo part way through deffors SM crofton by Sam, on Flickr for inspiration for the station building i looked into a colonel stephens book in the club library and found Shrawardine on the Shropshire & Montgomeryshire deffors SB shrawardine by Sam, on Flickr
sir douglas
a little problem has arisen, ive found that this photo of Shrawardine doesnt match the station on OS maps and its not a case of it not matching a particular era because the station hasnt changed on the maps through its life. i was looking at the maps to get a rough width & lentgh of the building Shrawardine 1882 1901 but found similar buildings at; Maesbrook http://www.oswestry-borderland-heritage.co.uk/big.php?image=Maesbrook%20Station%20Feb%201949.jpg edgebold http://www.oswestry-borderland-heritage.co.uk/big.php?image=Potts%20Line%20Edgebold%20station.jpg Hookagate http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hookagte-Railway-Station-Photo-Meole-Brace-Edgebold-Shrewsbury-Line-1-/261561220786 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hookagate-Railway-Station-Photo-Meole-Brace-Edgebold-Cruckton-Line-2-/262727179294?hash=item3d2bc29c1e a drawing based on the photo deffors SB (2) by Sam, on Flickr the finished drawing for the station master's house, since you can only get a slight view of the shed i left it out and copied our shed as a lean-to, our house is a 30's terrace and the shed has 2 doors which used to be the coal shed and toilet, though without the toilet, that half of the shed is still white washed inside deffors SM (2) by Sam, on Flickr
sir douglas
Yesterday i was having play when i noticed that all the stock where wobbling at the same place because of an un even rail joint, the frog on a point had to be removed and fixed because the nose wasnt quite level with the wings so there was a dip in the middle and the check rail opposite the frog was a bit tight making the wheels ride over, all this compounded by them being together in one place but all now fixed. while i had the frog out a hole was drilled in the board to pass the blue wire down through it Deffors(155) by Sam, on Flickr i forgot to mention before that a few weeks a go i repositioned the wire look for the control panel. After thinking about when i put on the curtain at a show the wire will get in the way holes have been cut in the front of the board and the back of the panel box which are made biug enough for the plug to pass through Deffors(154) by Sam, on Flickr Edited July 27, 2017 by sir douglas

sir douglas
The fascia for the scenic has been cut but only for the left hand part from the fiddle yard to the board join as im stiil not sure about the landscaping on the other board the fascia is shown here wrong way round, the hand hole for point No 1 switch is on the left end and the hand hole for the fiddleyard knobs on the right, the clamp is for a slight break that is being glued back together with an offcut of ply. the other 2 parts are the protective fascias that will go against eachother on the board join from the front to the track and go inbetween the 2 halves of the platform. the clamps are for gluing on blacks to join with the front fascia Deffors (159) by Sam, on Flickr

sir douglas
ive been thinking lately of rebuilding Halfmoon and replacing the tractor to be able to back date the layout to the 30's as i originally wanted, my dad is away today with friends going to a model shop and ive asked that of he can get me a 30's tractor, if he can get me one then I'll think about thew replacement body for halfmoon but looking through my man hundreds of photos collected from the net over the years i can only find one loco that looks like it'll fit on the chassis and around the motor

sir douglas
the bridge has been DAS'ed but needs some join gaps filled that opened up after the DAS shrank while drying, a problem also opened up after doing it as in the cardboard and the DAS made the inside of the arch smaller making the loading gauge too tight but the distance between the inside of the bridge is fine so I packed up the bridge and now sits 10mm higher on some blue foam Deffors (165) by Sam, on Flickr Deffors (166) by Sam, on Flickr Deffors (167) by Sam, on Flickr the dark grey covering has been cut and glued down, im not bothered by the wrinkling caused by the pva because its only a base layer to cover the cardboard Deffors (168) by Sam, on Flickr Edited August 14, 2017 by sir douglas
sir douglas
the bridge das work was patched up yesterday but had to leave it until today to sand it down after leaving it to dry Deffors (172) by Sam, on Flickr Deffors (171) by Sam, on Flickr and after sanding earlier. the bridge is now ready for scribing Deffors (174) by Sam, on Flickr while i had the DAS out, i wanted to make a wall across the left hand end of the goods yard, shown below before dasing, and showing that the wrinkles have gone down in the yard after drying and the buffers have been glued down and have been filled in around them Deffors (169) by Sam, on Flickr Deffors (170) by Sam, on Flickr sat in place but not glued. i'm thinking of putting a large wooden post on the end of the wall with gate hinge hooks on it but no gate or maybe the rotting remains of the gate in some bushes that could go to the left of the wall Deffors (173) by Sam, on Flickr The right hand side of the board join fascia is glued and nailed with the right hand half of the platform glued down against it, the plane is just being used as a weight Deffors (175) by Sam, on Flickr Edited August 16, 2017 by sir douglas

Nearholmer
It's brilliant stuff for 'brick' jobs. Here's the bread oven that started The Great Fire of London, in DAS, as made by my son for a school homework project. Not finescale, but he was only eight years old when he made this, and by using Lego figures to set the proportions, it has come out near enough to 0 scale to be able to fit into my layout (not sure exactly where yet, but ......). Sir Douglas - I am following yours with great interest; I think it's a wonderful piece of work. Kevin

sir douglas
one of the points died so i looked underneath to find some wires come loose, so they were soldered back on and then the horror when i noticed that the switch had fallen apart and lost the contact strips inside the switch and even more frustrating is the switch is the least accessible being right in the corner of the board and with a diagonal stretcher there too, i couldnt scavenge from the old switches from the old layout as they are different so have bought another today and will find out later if it can be used Edited August 24, 2017 by sir douglas
sir douglas
Maplin in their infinite wisdom have now gone back to the old type of switch so i cant take the contact strips out to repair the point switch but instead replace it entirely with the one bought today. the other 3 good switches are now without avaliable spares even though they are only about 7 months old at most, but i have 6 spares for the old switche type At least the layout is working again

sir douglas
scribing the footbridge this morning, the the strip that hasnt got vertical scribing will be a relief course common on canal bridges, im sure its got a technical name deffors (189) by Sam, on Flickr my main inspiration for the bridge is one on the barnsley canal just round the corner from me known as lovers bridge in old postcards I have recently decided what will go on the backscene, it will be Heath common but from the bottom of the hill with the tower on the left and Blackhill on the right https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.6726313,-1.4635254,1101m/data=!3m1!1e3 my scribbling on the screenshot below shows the key points. the viewpoint is the orange circle, the tower in green and Black hill in red, the yellow line is a footpath across the field, the white cottage in white and the old schoolhouse in blue unfortunately the viewpoint is gypo camp which would i not like to go near to take photos of thew view angle because its a blight to the neighbourhood and landscape in my mind but anyway, i can merge the view angles from either side like from the bottom of the footpath and from the road on the other side here is quick sketch of the intended view 004 by Sam, on Flickr and some pics three pics taken from near the tower starting on the left with the tower, as far as i know it was originally built to take water from the spring underneath to the nearby old hall heath common 30-9-2017 by Sam, on Flickr panning round a bit, the white cottage is just right of centre heath common 30-9-2017 (2) by Sam, on Flickr looking towards the right hand corner of the field, the common and then Black hill is on the far right, although you cant see it, the footpath goes diagonally across the middle of the photo heath common 30-9-2017 (3) by Sam, on Flickr and three pics taken from the road the tower can be seen in the distance on the left heath common 27-9-2017 by Sam, on Flickr the road up to heath with common land either side heath common 27-9-2017 (2) by Sam, on Flickr on the left just out of shot is a small hill with a bench on top and then there is dip with Black road in it and then it rises up to Black hill, there is a bench near the top on the edge of the common land and the top of the hill is hiding behind a tree heath common 27-9-2017 (3) by Sam, on Flickr in this context my bridge fits in well with the backscene as the aforementioned bridge is situated at the bottom of the path and i will draw on the backscene so the path meets my bridge and when its done if i look along the bridge a similar view should be had with the real thing lover's bridge 2 by Sam, on Flickr Edited October 3, 2017 by sir douglas
