Steam In Devon

The Devon Diesel Era Photo Record is building into an interesting archive that enables debate and entertainment for many. Here is the equivalent for steam. Sadly the steam heyday was before my time but there are still some mainline visits of steam and of course heritage and narrow gauge. If anyone is willing, feel free to share pictures that would otherwise never be in the public domain. Here to start is the first ever visit of a Royal Scot to Devon - thankyou Billy Butlin!  ,

This seemed like a good idea for a photographic location but capturing steam is an artform in itself! Royal Scot obscured by steam running round on the bridge by Pennycomequick roundabout, Plymouth. (26.4.16) Will try this location another time - when the wind is in another direction!

Taking the support coach off to Laira where the loco will turn on the triangle and run to Penzance for the up departure on day 2 of the 'Great Britain IX' tour. This is the site of the former Mutley Station, it was a dastardly decision to close this station!

Hi Garry, a good idea and hope it works out.  I am of the steam age and you couldn't have picked better pictures to start with as I lived in Plymouth and know the railway areas well.  Sadly we are now a long way away and can only offer any memories.  I liked the picture next to Ocean Siding (love that name) with the shipwreck of the "Antelope".  I have seen that one deteriorate over the years and its amazing how it still can be seen.  The car park spoils any view in the Up direction at Mutley while the bridge at Pennycomequick hasn't changed much.

CTMK and I were returning from an urgent excursion to Powderham Sawmills, to collect a replacement plank for one of our shed doors, and were driving past Starcross station in the Down direction, when I noticed the amount of photographers about. Despite having been sent the timings for the Great Britain, I hadn't got around to checking them, so I wasn't aware that the train was due that particular day.

Anyway, as we were emerging from behind the red sandstone former pump house just beyond the station, the train rushed past, with 'Royal Scot' going very well. Sadly CTMK firmly vetoed a sudden increase in our velocity in order to keep up with the train. This was perhaps a rather fortunate imposition, given the fact that a police car was just in the process of coming the other way.

Well, for me, that is what it would have been LIKE to be there at that moment, and that makes it a good "picture" (if you like). There are any number of "perfect" photo's of Royal Scot I can look at. How many shots did you take at that time/location?

I understand that train chasers are controlled by the same rules as BMW drivers.

Some more shots of the Westcountry. I am not sure what to make of renamings even on a temporary basis but the GWR did it extensively with the Castles so it's nothing new. A more authentic look without any headboard. I had permission from the duty stationmaster to use the disused platform at Goodrington Sands Halt. Thankyou to the T&DR. It used to be a lovely little station, architecturally akin to a London Underground station; being placed on an overbridge and tiled.

The turntable at Churston has perhaps turned more preserved locomotives than any other. It is currently the most Westerly one working (St Blazey is out of order). Buckfastleigh having secured one has rather shortsightedly sold it! This leaves the Laira Triangle and the Norton Fitzwarren Triangle plus Minehead  turntable.

I'm not too fond of renaming just for effect, I must admit.  The GW did it in celebration of the RAF for the times which seems legitimate reason.  Its a bit like turning the WSR into the S & D - you know its not real or nothing like it but if it makes someone happy and adds to the bottom line, so be it!

It is currently the most Westerly one working (St Blazey is out of order).

Last I heard, WCR had a deal with DB Cargo to lease, maintain and use the St Blazey turntable.

Last I heard, the St Blazey turntable was usable for the low amount of usage that WCR required of it.

Going back to about 1969 or 1970 a photo taken at Buckfastleigh, or just possibly Ashburton.

I have never taken very many steam photos, but on a day out in the summer of 1982 taking pictures of the summer saturday trains I was at Paignton when a service arrived from Kingswear.

The P&DR disposed of the beloved 4588 partly due to it being underpowered. 5542 of the same class was then hired in.  Not as powerful as the 2-8-0s that normally work the line, however here we see it take a load of 9 (normally 7) up Goodrington bank with only 2 small slips on a wet rail!

The Royal Duchy (07/08/16) worked by 46233 Duchess of Sutherland crossing Lord Morley's Bridge. Unfortunately in poor light giving blur. This locomotive has visited Plymouth before but this is the first visit to Cornwall. With a couple of bursts on the LMS hooter leaving a steam trail it was well into it's stride to attack Hemerdon Bank making very light work of this trip. A very impressive loco at speed. It's no wonder they took 15 up Shap and Beatock in their day. This bridge over the Plym would be good to model it, has so much detail.

and another batch!

I am not sure of the location of the shot of 34024 - I do have Dad's spotting logs, so may be able to track it down by a trawl through 1964! If anyone can instantly identify it - do tell! It may be it's not in Devon - in which case .......

Fab pix, as we used to say!  Especially the Southern as we usually took the the Friary to Waterloo train years ago.  'You're in Strong country', used to get me excited long before I knew what it meant!

Clearly my filing is more haphazard than I thought as I have turned up some more. If I have posted some of these already - my apologies - it's late in the evening after a busy week!

Thanks for posting all of those great photos.

Re the strange track route - It looks like there are gangers working so maybe the route was determined by maintenance needs?
