Popular Post Richard Pike Posted January 9, 2019 Popular Post Share Posted January 9, 2019 (edited) On Monday Simon and I got chance to operate a few trains, specifically to do some testing for voltage drop and current loading over such a large layout. Tests proved very positive with less than 0.2 volt drop and the double headed 37's pulling less than 2 amps peak on a 30 wagon train. Here are some of the video's we made which are essentially the first trains to run on HLJ. First up, a pair of Tinsley's finest Heljan 37's working a East bound empty MGR. Followed quickly by another empty MGR, this time worked by a DJH Class 40. Something a little unusual, Derby RTC ''IRIS'' Test car working a Manchester to Leeds inspection run. Popular Post HeatonLodge40 Posted January 15, 2019 Popular Post Share Posted January 15, 2019 Last couple weeks has seen the board (in post 604) finished and attached to the rest of the layout. The next one is work in progress awaiting scenery, the yellow squares next to the track are track circuit transmitters to power track circuits on the prototype. These are easy to make from slices of solid brass rod in two sizes superglued together. Then they are painted yellow and weathered. Almost impossible to see but I run decoder wire from them to the track to represent the cables which do just this on the real thing. Third pic is of two cassettes awaiting fitting into the frame. I’m building the concrete trackwork too now from Peco components although the wooden sleeper type is standard Peco flexitrack with the webs cut away and the sleepers spaces increased to the correct width Plus the track is cut into scale 60ft lengths. Ballast is laid dry and the PVA dropper method used. First of the 40 5’x4’ fiddle yard boards have landed but look a bit lost in the expanse of the mill basement! On the scenic side meanwhile I collected another 4 frames from White Rose modelworks and a dozen trestles. Getting these in on my own from the van was interesting given the narrow entrance to the basement. As I’m now hand building the track too these await the concrete sleepered version. Pics show both directions on the scenic side (ie what’s been completed and how far still to go) & the new fiddle yard boards plus the narrow entrance. From now on Heaton Lodge will take on a much more frosty appearance similar to the layout Kinmundy. Since I’m building westwards the sun rising in the east hasn’t yet melted the icy frost on the tracks and trees.. 35 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Popular Post HeatonLodge40 Posted February 4, 2019 Popular Post Share Posted February 4, 2019 I wasn’t particularly looking forward to tracklaying but this is the second section I’ve completed myself and it’s actually quite satisfying! There’s not been much compromise in the building of HL until now but I’ve decided to drop the practice of widening the sleeper spacing by a couple of mm to mimic the exact prototypical measurements. To my eye once ballasted it’s difficult to spot the difference. I am continuing making the concrete track in scale 60ft lengths tho. Each length has its own ‘droppers’ which will connect to the main bus. I’ve reached the spot too where the next set of signals are located a scale 1.1km from the gantry way back down the line. These were made by Matt at Absolute Aspects about 2 years ago and will work with an automatic infra red control which changes them after a passing train from red to single yellow etc. 22 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I mentioned before from now on HL will take on a distinctly frosty appearance as if the sun hadn’t yet warmed up the landscape. Like the static grass some years ago I’ve tried around 6 types of products which promise a frosty appearance with a sparkle. I don’t want a deluge of snow just that look of an early morning. The product I settled on is called Dirty Down which is aimed at theatrical stages and films. Used lightly I reckon it works a treat. I’ve also used Deluxe Materials sparkles for the tops of walls and concrete trunking. Anyway you be the judge! Popular Post HeatonLodge40 Posted February 7, 2019 Popular Post Share Posted February 7, 2019 It’s taken 6 days to lay 6 tracks each 12ft long - the concrete sleepered version is obviously Peco components and I’ve got assembling 1 length of that down to 10 mins. There are two sets of droppers soldered onto each length of track. As for painting I’ve been trying to replicate the grubby concrete sleepers but leaving the middle of the sleeper (with ‘Dow-Mac’ on it) fairly clean. Ended up using track colour/grime to tone it down, then once dry running a track rubber down the middle. Works well. Dummy fishplates are on too..tomorrow I’ll paint the rail sides a dull brown and get some ballasting done. Friday I’ll be doing some serious truck driving for a mate whose short staffed, when this is all finished an HGV license will come in handy when shifting it.. 18 2 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
