Well I guess if you stick your head above the parapet you’re bound to get it shot at..

 

I had some screenshots of some posts on other forums passed on to me over the weekend.

Basically taking aim since ‘that guy has pots of cash.. cheque book modeller..anyone can do that if you’ve enough cash blah blah’ he drives a fu**ing Lambo enough said’ (!)

 

Whilst I have had huge support on this forum which is much appreciated (I don’t post in much detail anywhere else)..& I’m not the sort of chap that gives a flying fig over what others say, neither am I the most sociable of people..

It still might still surprise a few people that I must be the only idiot in history to sell his business, refinance his beloved classic Lamborghini & remortgage his house to get this project finished (!) Money in spades I certainly don’t have.

 

I’ve always been uncomfortable with accolades and there’s many a post in this forum ..which because of its positive words, have really given me huge encouragement exactly when I’ve needed it (being on your own in a dungeon for ten hours doesn’t help).

So very many thanks again.

 

But as you’ll all know from previous posts I’m sticking my neck on the line (no pun intended) for this project purely because on the run up to Christmas next year it’s going to be stuck in the faces of tens of thousands of the great British public out shopping (not railway modellers) mainly to get new 

people involved, and also to get me a return on all this. (See posts a few pages back)..

 

Anyway..

As I’ve also said before I’ve an HGV license and if the aforementioned public turn their noses up at what will branded ‘Britain’s Biggest Model Railway’ then you can be sure I’ll be seen in the cab of a Stobart truck somewhere

It doesn't matter what you do or where you do it, there will always be somebody whose view differs from yours. Now that everybody and his/her/its dog can freely state their views for all to see, there will always be a negative being expressed somewhere. Whether you're comfortable with accolades or not, there will still be plenty of them, of that you can be sure. If you don't give a flying fig then you will most certainly continue to attract and be able to see many, many more accolades. Just keep on doing the wonderful modelling you are doing, so that all we lesser mortals have something to aspire to. And drool over.

Those comments from “elsewhere” are from jealous people. Not jealous of money, but because of your skills, passion and determination, and the fact they don’t have them. They just use the money excuse to hide their inadequacies.

And most of those voices are from the shallow end of the gene pool as well Simon.  I know that at times it's difficult to ignore those chattering twerps but there are many on this forum wh are in awe of your project and the vision behind it. I may never get the chance to see the layout, unless it comes to France but you will have my moral support and admiration wherever you are.

Hopefully I can bring a little more light heartedness to the discussion again. 

 

This is the first time I've been asked to build anything set in the 1980's. I bought my first car in 1982, a bright red Escort.....I couldn't help myself, I ordered one from Oxford Diecast and it's just arrived. 

 

It needs weathering, of course, and don't worry Simon, I won't glue it down.

Nice one Peter .. I learnt to drive in a Capri hence this one here.

As it’s a frosty day at Heaton Lodge the windscreen has to look the part.

 

Discovered by dabbing a touch of superglue inside, the fumes do the rest! I’ll be using that technique elsewhere pretty soon (but not in the cottage)!

A nice touch. It would also show up fingerprints Simon. It's been a standard forensic technique for several years.  Looking good.  I thi k by the 80's it would gave had a Police Aware sticker on it. Red lettering on a white background.

One of the things I most dislike about 'social meeja' is that worthless scumb@gs can get away with expressing loud, mindless, opinions about anything and everything, especially when they are actually envious of what someone else has achieved, or the skills that they see but are personally lacking.

 

One of the aspects I most like about RMWeb is that, the sort of behaviour we are talking about is rare, and when it arises it is sat on heavily by the mods, which I applaud.

 

The modelling displayed on Heaton Lodge Junction is of the highest order and worthy of the praise that has been heaped upon it. I for one will be queuing up to see it just as soon as it is on show.

Personally, I wouldn't care if you or anyone else had Bill Gates money, the exceptional level of modelling shown here is incredibly impressive and most of all for me, inspirational. You cannot buy the skills and talent you've shown here in your work Simon.

The internet would be a much politer place if you had to use your actual name I reckon.

 

Seeing tiny trains running around an N gauge model railway in a Sydney suburban shopping centre back when I was about 10 made me dig my dads old Triang trainset and assorted bits and pieces  out and get started railway modelling. I'm sure there'll be many  a  future  modeller who'll be saying  they got started after seeing Heaton Lodge.

Wholly agree, indeed, if any access to the internet required a personally-indentifying SIM card to be connected to the computer, it might go a long way to eliminating scams too.

It would probably generate a new one as well. Within a fortnight somebody would be selling cloned fake ID cards.

Those kind of people really p××s me off. It doesn't matter how much money someone has or hasn't got, besides possibly being able to house such a project. 

Anyone following this amazing project will know that you aren't buying in the most crucial element of this layout. SKILL and an artist's eye.

These you have in abundance, I'm totally in awe of this project and sincerely hope I will be able to see it in the flesh.

Keep up the great work and ignore those pathetic little haters who aren't worth a second thought.

Simon, it is clear you are throwing money at problems that money can solve.  It's also clear YOU are throwing time at them too.  There is little difference in my view, between what you are doing with Heaton Lodge Junction and what I've done with Long Marton, and what the brown material spreaders haven't done.  Well, perhaps you have skill, and I'm just a lacky who is still on his training layout #4 or so  ...     Yes, you may be spending a car (or two...or three...) of money on this, but that's because you have chosen to do so.  Your legacy will be something different than a heaping pile of pound coins for your children to hurl themselves into, a la Duck Tales :

There are very few people who would have the right to complain that you are checkbook modeling when they are not- your late friend Allan would be one of the ones that comes to mind.  (here, let me make this mill building from some poster paint & a couple of cornflake boxes, and make you want to set fire to your layout...), and I don't see individuals like that as being likely to complain.  Circumstances can allow us to make choices, and we are daft if we do not pursue our interests to our abilities.  As per my posts in Tony Wright's threads about checkbook modeling, the only part I find offensive is when someone claims they did something because they pry'd open the checkbook and paid someone else to do it, rather than doing it themselves.  The whole way through, you have said that White Rose is making the baseboards, and that they did a bunch of the tracklaying too, which is Peco track, and you have Heljan locos pulling Dapol wagons which you weathered.  So you're not claiming anything else, and that to me spells it all right there...

 

I'm sorry I'm so far away that getting to see Heaton Lodge Junction is unlikely at least until it is back "home", but that's where my checkbook runs out.  I've got my kids to look after, purchases for Long Marton are much reduced from pre kids...
