Heaton Lodge Junction

I think that even if they had unlimited time and money, there are very, very few other modellers who would be remotely capable of achieving this. Quite extraordinary - a railway for the history books.

does it have its own hall booked

No, but he could fit two average village hall shows in the operating well. :biggrin_mini2:

Or a couple of artic trailers. Simon, you could solve the backscene by having a couple of curtain-siders with a panorama on them and leave 'em in there for loading up at the end of the show.

The money helps but there was a comment towards the end about this being driven by one person and not a modelling club - it is probably the same determination that led to the owner making money in business that allows him to see this layout through.

What this video should also lay to rest are those comments elsewhere that the layout has been built for him, it hasn't, he has called in help where someone has the specialist skills but he's done a lot of this my himself one board at a time - again that business brain - breaking the layout into manageable chunks, knowing how long each section takes, practicing and experimenting early on to create a production line that will see the layout develop.

The fiddleyard looks like part of Healey Mills, it is so big - should put down gravel and a few lighting gantries :D

I don't think it would be out of place to put this layout in a massive open sided tent with the Pennines as an actual back group

No, can't see any potential problems with that.

Fabulous - and as SHMD said - highly informative. You were hanging around Heaton Lodge about three / four years after I'd moved on to other things (girlfriends, motorbikes etc!), but nothing much has changed really, and it honestly looks like the real location - and as you pointed out, as for yourself, as well as me, seeing the video really takes me back to the late 70's (early 80's in your case).

On another note - I'm still curious when the footpath tunnel leading from the footbridge was lined with profiled steel. It certainly wasn't lined in my day, it was simply wet slimy stonework in there - and at the top of the wall, there were dark recesses formed between each steel 'roof' girder. One time we noticed something sticking out of one of those recesses - turned out to be an air rifle someone had stashed there - it wasn't in great condition, but we did hand it in to the police (PC Diggins as I remember!).

Huge thanks once again to the many positive comments. And of course to Andy for the video.

I often come back to this thread when I feel like taking a sledgehammer to something I’ve just built.
Reading it persuades me to put it back in the garage.

Cheers

It must be possible to get a stabilised camera and either wheel, or walk, it along the layout

I can do that but I've got a much more creative idea I'll run past Simon when he's further on with the layout if he'll have me and my contraptions back again!

Hold the camera still and move the layout past it?

Talking of drones I did indeed fly one up and down the full length of Heaton Lodge before construction began (and before the laws about drone heights came in).

It helped hugely as I flew it slowly a couple hundred foot high and picked up loads of detail (positioning of AWS ramps inparticular) with its high res camera. Couple of times a 158 overtook it underneath!

It could definitely be done on the model too tho I’m intrigued as to what Andy has in mind!

It's still wet in the footpath tunnel and has I've noticed, on occasions in the last few years when I've been at Heaton Lodge to take photos, been flooded.  I'm sure it's also been 'home' to someone as for awhile a year or so ago there was a tent and belongings in there.  Relatively safe but probably a little noisy, even overnight.

The Yorkshire Shooting Centre is a very short distance away along Paul Lane so I wonder if that's where the air rifle was supposed to be!
