Hi.

Regarding the MacBraynes vehicles. Kits and Transfers are available from more than one source. Marsden make kits for various MacBraynes types as does Sunrise  Sunrise also make comprehensive sets of transfers for MacBraynes buses and also 'Highland Omnibuses' who took over MacBraynes bus operations in 1970. George (Sunrise) also makes the 'Royal Route' emblems that would be applied to the cab doors of MacBraynes Lorries pre 1970.

Thanks for the info, will look Marsden and Sunrise up if/when I do any more MacBraynes vehicles.

Few more pics of Crinan from Darlington show today. It is worth mentioning that the Neodymium Magnets used for uncoupling the Kadees worked exceptionally well on the whole, this weekend being the first real test. The only issues were the odd low hanging tail being pulled onto a magnet which would stop or derail the vehicle in question. This was easily remedied by bending the offending tail up a little.

I purchased a Peedie Models Clyde Puffer Resin kit at Darlington show; Graham Eason kindly lent me a finished one to check its width would fit in the Canal locks, which it does (well, the real thing was built to fit the Crinan Canal, but you never know!) I'm told it is scaled from "Auld Reekie" herself. Thankfully the loan model didn't sail off the edge of the world, before you ask!

Whilst chatting to Phil Dove, who was operating Paul Axcell's superb "Glen Dour" 1960s Distillery layout yesterday, we talked about Grain wagons used on BR. Mention was made of the old David Larkin series of 5 softback wagon books produced by D. Bradford Barton in the mid to late 70s, the Grain wagons mainly being covered in the "Private Owner Freight Wagons" volume, which I joked was the one I had never been able to get hold of.

Well, today, Phil came over and very kindly presented me with his copy of the book to complete the set.

There are some truly wonderful people in our hobby. Thank you Phil, you are a Gentleman.

Many thanks for your comments and posting your photos; the thought occurred to me that I have not taken any with the Swing Bridge open to the Canal!

Mike and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, the layouts were all excellent in our opinion and what a superb and unique venue! Everyone from Darlington Club was friendly and very helpful and we hope you have many more successful shows in future.

Regards to all.

Martyn.

Hi Martyn,

I have to say that this is some of the finest water modelling I've ever seen.

Please can you let us know how you did it, or have you already posted a description of it?  The way it blends into the backscene is phenomenal, I had to look really hard to work out where the join is!

Have you put any photos in the How Realistic topic?

All the best, Dave.

Hi Dave, thanks for your comment. The hardboard canal base was painted using a cheap acrylic paint set from one of the Pound Shops, mainly greens, black and browns applied over each other whilst wet to give a streaky effect. When dry, gloss Yacht varnish (from the same source) was brushed on (2 coats iirc), when tacky it was scored across the width of the canal many times (timing is everything for this) which left a very slight ripple effect.

The backscene is a commercial offering from ID Backscenes; the canal continuation was simply a suitable photo printed onto plain A4 paper, which was cut out to avoid "hard" edges and glued into place with Pritt Stick. I did study lots of photos of the Crinan canal but the water colour match between layout and backscene is largely a lucky coincidence!

The small boat (nominally to HO scale) is placed more or less against the backscene which helps the perspective and Edwardian's super photos have caught some nice reflections which certainly do help the illusion.

Thanks,

Martyn.

  • 1 month later...

All set up at Bentley Motors for the Alsager show, with my 29s running I'm looking forward to seeing if the Dapol stand right opposite notice....maybe they can lend me one of theirs??:mocking_mini:

Already had a suggestion that the 126 should make an appearance too!

I have to say that the 2 tone livery really does not suit the 29 at all. My first train set had the playcraft H0 one in plane green, It might have been the 21 though and not the 29. It was a really good little loco, all wheel drive and helical gears with a huge can motor in the middle. Way better than anything from Triang/Hornby.

Loving the canal though Martyn you have to look really hard to see the join with the backscene , very very nice mate.

Regards Lez.
