Talywain Big Arch Shed - NCB 1970ish OO: now under new ownership

Recommended Posts

Photo from last weekend's show at Prestatyn showing the revised set-up. Folding legs with bolt-on braces fitted, along with a new dark grey curtain and lighting facia:

post-28743-0-04309300-1481355260.jpg

This gives a high viewing level without bending (though I acknowledge can make viewing difficult for some people eg wheelchair users; and I'm 6ft and can only JUST see over the top of the backscene, making end operation preferable). However, with the legs folded it can stand on 2 trestles for a more conventional operating height.

The curtain is held by my now standard use of velcro after too many years of messing with drawing pins.

The lighting facia was salvaged and modified from a previous layout the day before the show and is fitted with a modular kitchen strip light, another will be added for more even lighting.

Next job is to wire in a Hand held Feedback controller and switch to allow it or the original to be used.

The layout performed well on the whole and had good feedback (mainly in the hands of Neil H as I was required elsewhere most of the day).

Been a while since I updated as the layout has been in storage since Christmas! However today it has had the cobwebs dusted off in order to see if anything needs attention, and make a few small alterations.

The next outing will be to Colwyn MRC's exhibition in Llandudno on 29/30th July.

A few jobs being done ready for Colwyn Show, namely the interior of the loco shed having internal brick walls fitted along with some detailing, and the old cliche of a mains water pipe "bridge" fitted over the fiddle siding exit through the backscene. Foliage will also be added around this; this is the aspect of the layout I am least happy with, a bridge would work better of course but the real place has none and the area is quite open; being almost a micro layout it's a compromise I have accepted.

The folding legs have also had 4" removed as it was impossible to work the layout from behind as was (awkward as the control panel is here), but still gives a relatively high viewing level.

A few details added in the loco shed.

post-28743-0-07474700-1499850324_thumb.jpgpost-28743-0-08572200-1499850383_thumb.jpg

An 'A' frame used for wagon repairs, a small raised inspection platform and various odds and ends including old chimneys, wagon wheels, buffers etc.

The rear shed wall and track (4ft) still need attention.

post-28743-0-82197500-1499850551_thumb.jpg

And a local use for an old chimney as a flowerpot!

post-28743-0-95815300-1499850662_thumb.jpg

The pit pony Feed Van no.1 must be in for repair. This is "based on" (using an old Hornby Lime wagon) rather than an exact copy which would need to be scratchbuilt (maybe one day. . .)

A couple of experimental black and white shots!

And a faded old colour one, well, just because!

Today I finally completed the shed interior by finishing off the internal walls etc. One track leads through a pair of doors to the workshops which adjoined the loco shed. Some Wills chequer plating was added in the 4ft to represent drip trays, and over the track by the closed doors to simulate a removable walkway (and hide the fact the track stops about 1cm before the doors).

Just leaves a few more exterior details to add now, such as the office chimney pot and guttering etc.

A search through my stock box found these 2 wagons I'd forgotten about:

post-28743-0-65733100-1500204915_thumb.jpg

The late version Mainline "Dinnington" Coke wagon will be modified to become the Stores Van (or replace the Feed Van) by replacing the top planks with solid ones, adding a sloping Corrugated roof and replacing the side doors with "van" type ones (as per PGH's excellent photo earlier in this thread). I have another 7 plank wagon which will become whichever one this does not.

The Peco Emlyn "Wonderful Wagon" will be used pretty much as is with a little further weathering and NCB markings added, once the card interior has been fitted properly. I once tried repainting one of these wagons but it failed miserably as much of the embossed detail was swallowed by paint!

The rolling stock seen in the previous post has been through the works, just a final coat of dirty varnish to apply now.

First up is the replacement for the Feed and Stores vans shown in PGH's excellent photos on p.2 of this thread. My hastily repainted first attept was this repainted Hornby Lime wagon:post-28743-0-43892700-1500895040_thumb.jpg

Which has been replaced with a much more heavily shortened and reworked Mainline Coke wagon thus:

The v.2 "Feed Van" is being built from a Bachmann open to match this one. (More photos during conversion on my workbench thread)

And the Peco open is almost done too:

Had a pleasant weekend with Talywain over in Llandudno for Colwyn MRC's show, layout and locos generally ran well and I managed to take a few phone photos too.

Thanks to all at Colwyn MRC for a great weekend as usual, as well as to everyone who stopped to watch and chat.

Hi Martyn,

Like this a lot.  Particularly impressed with some of your loco and wagon conversions.  In terms of "Islwyn", did you work from drawings, or work out the sizes from photographs?

Thanks and regards,

Alex.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your comments, Islwyn was almost entirely based on photos, working around fitting the body to the Electrotren chassis of course, and stuffed with as much "liquid lead" as I could fit.

I think you've done a really great job on this diorama - particularly with the balancing of the big arch with the loco shed (with nice internal detailing).  The pipe gantry back door is a very neat ploy.

The photo in post 53 leaves me longing for a similar view from the other side, showing more of the Big Arch.

Hi Tony,

Thanks, I must admit I have not taken a huge number of photos of the layout, as it spends most of its time in storage; I will try to get more next time I set it up for a run. This is about the only one I have looking towards the Arch other than close ups seen earlier in the thread, taken when I was working on the loco shed, not great quality or perspective angle I'm afraid:

Cheers. I reckon it would look great when viewed at track level - that arch really is an impressive structure!

Thanks, it does look better from a low angle as you say. The layout's legs were originally set to give a rail level viewing height of about 4'6" but this was too awkward and made the layout unstable with being so narrow, especially if no barriers were provided. It has since been lowered by approx 6" which works better overall, I can now see over the backscene a little easier too!

Photos from a test running session today:

A coach load of enthusiasts on a tour of sites seems to have turned up, having parked up on the access road.

post-28743-0-53492900-1519908676_thumb.jpg

Some of them are seen around the shed area while locos are prepared for the day's work.

After which various locos are seen pottering about the yard:

Followed by locos returning to shed at the end of the shift.

And now for something temporarily different!

Or "Right period, wrong region!"

Or "Invasion of the Diesels"!

As I have ideas of doing a stabling point "micro" at some point, some of the "Crinan" fleet were tried on the layout for a "kind of Fort William depot c.1970 feel". Thats not to say that is what I would be aiming to do necessarily but it does help give ideas and get creative juices flowing! :jester:

Whilst tidying and testing the layout ready for Saturday's outing I decided to take a few more phone pics, mainly details and angles I'd not really explored before; a rather pleasant way to while away half an hour!post-28743-0-34980000-1530867119_thumb.jpgpost-28743-0-90872700-1530867210_thumb.jpgpost-28743-0-96451400-1530867245_thumb.jpgpost-28743-0-56491200-1530867282_thumb.jpgpost-28743-0-20523700-1530867417_thumb.jpgpost-28743-0-41987800-1530867456_thumb.jpgpost-28743-0-14014800-1530867512_thumb.jpgpost-28743-0-50450200-1530867545_thumb.jpg

A quick job tonight was to knock up a couple of pit prop wagon loads. There were a few different ways of loading wagons but frankly I opted for the quickest and simplest based on a photo elsewhere in South Wales.

A sub base of rigid foamboard, PVA adhesive and an old cheapo bamboo roller blind being the main ingredients!

Talywain has today been sold to a new home. Happily I know the purchaser well so will hopefully still be able to see, and perhaps help run it at shows around the North West; I was quite sad to see it go but needs must as I have ideas for other projects and a lack of space, that common problem!

The new owner is a member of this Parish so if he starts a new thread I will link it here, though obviously if he wished, he could continue this one.

My thanks to everyone who has contributed to, or liked this thread.

Martyn.
