Evening all,

Had a wander to Caistor Model Railway Exhibition in North Lincolnshire this afternoon. Very nice event, which is on today and tomorrow (Sun).  All OO and N gauge layouts, with a couple of 7mm narrow gauge.  Some very high standards of modelling in my view.  Some pics (all just taken quickly on the iPhone) that I thought you may enjoy!

Greetings all,

Well various issues, mainly work and family, but a small 'health' blip, thankfully now all resolved, have pretty much kept me off rmWeb recently :( - added into this is the garage snag seems never ending and all in all my modelling mojo seems to be hitting a major bump at the present time.  However a little bit of distance has made me realise that while I'm lucky to have a largish collection of O gauge items (08s, 20s, 31, 37s, 40, 45, 47s, 10 Heljan Mk1s etc..) some of it really needs to be moved on to somebody who can run and make good use of it.  At the moment the majority is stored in its boxes, and its just not being enjoyed, and to some extent it seems silly to have that value sat in boxes.

So if anyone is interested - drop me a PM - There are certain locos and wagons that are definitely staying,  when I've worked out over the next week or two what is going and whats staying I'll do a group PM and give you guys first choice.  Im not looking to make money out of it, just achieve sensible prices without the hassle of eBay!

Onto happier news and progress has been made on the small Fowler industrial shunter that is going to become the depot pilot for my Tyne & Wear Metro layout.  I've decided that in the fullness of time, my current test layout is to be dismantled and a small 13' x 18" T&W Metro station/PW Yard will appear in its place, at least it will give me some modelling to do.  Those with long memories may recall that I had designed in CAD a centre-cab version of the Ixion Fowler.  With help from the photos supplied by Chris K at Ixion/Minerva, and a donor chassis, I was really pleased with the overall look on screen - it was the first real CAD design I'd completed since learning the software.

So this was where we last saw it .... back in early September

Well having bitten the bullet I'm delighted to say that a box arrived with me from the Netherlands, courtesy of those nice fellows at UPS .... containing the 3D printed body!  I have to say I'm totally and utterly delighted.  To have taken this from an idea, to the CAD drawings to a physical model with very little external help, really has improved my modelling mood somewhat!  As you'll see I've yet to paint it .. but would value the opinion of people.

A couple of learning points, I had failed to give thought to how I would get the glass into the windows, as the motor box cover that does protrude into he cab area a bit (unavoidable) prevents access from inside.  I've got an idea, but not sure if it will work or not.   As suspected the grill on the front didn't work, but the 3D print is quite thin there, so I should be able to drill and file that out and replace with an etched brass mesh.  In all honest, I thought it would be too fine, and the Shapeways software flagged it as an error, but if I was to reprint it at all, I'd leave the grill open.

I've yet to actually run it, but I think all should be ok.  Another thought may be to get an LED or some fibre optic into the two headlights, but that my be Christmas or beyond the way things are going.

Cheers to AndyP for keeping in touch, delights to see he's returned to the dark side - I have 10 pages of his new small layout to go and catch up on, although god knows when!  But I will be keeping an eye out!  Also, a very public thank you to David (Jintyman) whose work on weathering my OBA and VBA vans surpasses description.  They have come out far better than I could have imagined, and I am eternally grateful!  Before anyone comments, those are not being sold!

Thanks Andy.

A quick question for anyone, a friend has just texted me to ask, and I don't know the answer ... once DAS clay has been exposed to air for a week or so it will be rock hard.  What happens if water sets spilt on it ... does it become soft again?  If so, is there anyway to stop that (i.e. oven cooking it) or is it a case that if water could get spilt, then something like oven cooked Fimo is better?

DAS will go hard quite quickly, and can the be sanded or scribbed, I always mix PVA with it whilst applying it to a surface. I don't think just adding water will soften it again, it never has for me anyway.

Well another Shapeways box has arrived ... with progress on the Metrocar!

I've put more pictures on the dedicated thread for it ... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/125714-tyne-wear-metrocar-cad-7mm/?p=2962112 ... but this is where we are at the moment.  The cab unit is separate from the bodyshell, just held on with magic tape at the moment for the purpose of this photograph!

Hi All,

Just a quick photo update, three Heljan wagons have recently arrived back from the Wagon Works at Talyllyn Junction (thanks David!) and look superb, so with no progress having been made on the layout, I look the opportunity to just pose them with a few different locos.

Hopefully, I'll be able to make some progress with track and layout in the coming months.

Enjoy he say's, yes I did thanks Rich, superb work by David, and although I've seen pics of them before, as sets and with Locos really enhances the work done on them, you must be well chuffed mate.

Thanks Andy,

Hope your recovery is coming on ok.  Yes delighted doesn't even cover it!  David has done a sterling job, far better than I could ever have got to!  Incidentally the TOPS clerk at Marsh Lane Sidings was telling me this morning there a special timed for a few weeks ... 6Z04 Marsh Lane Sidings to Talyllyn Junction Wagon Works ... apparently another batch going for 'maintenance' work!

Following my comments from December, I'm starting to sort out what is going and whats not... two people asked me to keep them up to date on what was being sold - sincere apologies, but somehow I think I've deleted the PMs without realising as I cannot find them now, so drop me a note again!

First up is this Heljan Blue 47 - numbered as 1694 with a light weathering ... currently seem to be hitting £500-£550 on ebay, so sensible offers considered. Please bear in mind Hermes postage will be about £8 on their new prices.

It has been noted for sale on the GOG Sales & Wants list too. No silly offers please, im in no rush to sell, just looking to rationalise the fleet bit, having started to form my plans for going forward.

Evening all,

Well its been far too long since I updated this post - combination of family and work unfortunately, together with a bit of a lack of mojo, given problems with the shed etc.  Speak with AndyP tonight reminded me I that I needed to do an update!

So I've been through a bit of rationalisation of stock, two of the 47s (one green, one blue) and two of the 37s (one green, one in RfD) have gone, along with a Dapol 08 and the Bachmann Brass 08.  Not a case of giving up, but more a change of direction (thats probably not going to be as drastic as I first thought I would be).  In the cases of the 47s, I'd bought them all for repaints at the appropriate time, the same with the green 37.  The RfD one was aimed at touching on the more recent extent of the layout.  However, the change of direction was originally to move away from modern traction totally, and go back to the 1930s for a small terminus layout, using some of the O gauge trams I've got. Common sense has prevailed a little bit, and I decided to pair back the ambitions on the layout, return back to plan A - keeping things simple - and go for something that would allow multiple periods to be operated, le 1960s and early 1980s.  Probably on a far simpler premise of a double track main line with a freight loop.  We'll see what happens!

But I'm still here, still working on doing something with the 7mm.  I thought about 2mm or 4mm to achieve my aims, but no matter how much I tried to convince myself, I just cannot get excited about the smaller scales.  It doesn't have the presence or detail of 7mm!  At the end of the day, I just want to get a layout running, where I can go and run the trains, do some scenery work, and shut out the family for bit!!! ... possibly not in that order :P

Great to have a chat this evening Rich, and don't talk to me about rationalisation, I need a major cull.

All the best with the new / continued project mate.

Evening all,

A rare update from me!  Things are plodding slowly in the background - too slowly, but at least its kind of forward in some respects!

While clearing a box out yesterday, I found two GJH Plant Company kits - both are unopened, in their original boxes, and if anyone wants them, just PM me.  One is a 7mm Scale Resin Kit of a Curtainside Truck - this was £38 new, and I believe is now out of production with GJH.  Looking for £35 plus postage. The other is a Ruud ballast wagon kit, these are £28 new - so £20 plus postage?

As far as I know both are complete as they arrived - not sure if the Rudd has wheels included or not.  If GJH included them it will have, if they didn't it won't!  I can check tho.

Hope everyone is doing well, and surviving the recent heat!

Evening all,

Well I said in my last post at things are moving forward slowly, well moved forward a bit further today (booked a rare lieu-day off work) and spent the time clearing things out - having actually managed to get some track down and run my 'A2' model up and down. I think that's the first time its moved in the two years since I bought it! Had a rummage through the Heljan boxes today, and refreshed my memory of what I have actually collected.

A couple of questions for those of you in the know:-

a) if you were modelling a terminal station, what would you work the platform width on (or more importantly track centre-to-track centre, either side of the platform face.  I'm assuming the two tracks between platforms would be the standard 6ft?

b) At somewhere like Manchester Piccadilly for example, where you had a standard crossover or scissor crossover at the buffer stops end to release a loco, am I correct in thinking this would have been worked from a ground frame between the tracks?

c) Other than somewhere like Ranelagh Road, outside Paddington, and King's Cross loco, did any other terminal stations have small (maybe 5-8 locos) stabling points adjacent to a station?  Im looking for inspiration!

Im milling around with some ideas, with aid of a long tape measure, lots of (overactive) imagination, bits of paper and a pencil.  Im determined that by the time im off work at Christmas I want some track down so I can run these expensive models I keep acquiring!  Like I say, moving forward, but slowly.

As ever chaps, any thoughts/suggestions/help are gratefully welcomed and received.

Rich,

I believe that the platform edge must be at least six feet from any structure on the platform, so you could get away with a 42mm platform (though it wouldn’t look good) and a 12’ wide platform with lamps down the middle would be skimping, but do-able. The Guild standards are available on the website, they recommend a minimum of 40mm from structure to edge of platform, and 18mm from edge of platform to near rail.

Loco release crossovers could be controlled from the box, or a local frame, dependent on circumstances, wealth of company, and intensity of traffic. The local frame would almost certainly have to be released from the box and with a scissors, you have a facing point issue. For simple, use a pilot.

Ranelagh Bridge isn’t really small - do have a look at Steve Fay’s model.

Lots of termini had a station pilot road, once the pilot had removed & relocated the stock in another platform or the carriage sidings, the train loco could toddle off to the facilities, coal, water & turn. The pilot would return to its road, which would be provided with water, typically, to wait for the next duty.

Using a pilot avoids a loco release crossover, and allows shorter platforms, as you don’t have to allow for the length of the pointwork.

Hope this helps

Simon

Hi Simon,

Thats several valid points.  Thanks for that - also for the correct spelling of Ranelagh!  I knew I'd got that wrong - Steve Fay's model is superb, I've been following that and am totally in awe at what he achieves.  While Ranelagh isn't exactly small, its not the size of Tinsley or Bath Road!  I was hoping to point people towards ideas and suggestions that were not a full blown depot.

Your comment about the pilot is definitely a good one however.  I'll pursue that one further.  Given that all of my stock is 1980s, its probably more likely to have a pilot than crossover.  Those were the days when station pilots still existed of course, but the comment about allowing space for the crossover is very valid, one thing I hadn't considered on my back of an envelope-based track planning!

Evening all,

Wow, three posts in four days, we're all going to have a rush of blood somewhere if I don't calm down!  While measure, checking, double check and pondering this afternoon, a thought occurred to me related to baseboards.  What is the best way to achieve a lightweight baseboard frame?  Traditionally I have always used 3/4" chipboard (yes, I know, but its always worked well for me in the past!) on a 2x1 or 2x2 framework.  For the layout im now thinking of, I need to create a lightweight frame, capable of supporting a station environment, potentially several 7mm locomotives (ie weight) and several sets of stock.  The majority of the station would be on the level, but two lines need to slope downwards and descend into a fiddle yard.

I've looked around rmWeb tonight, and come up with the light weight laser-cut type of frameworks, with a baseboard that is essentially wooden panels cut to the track layout, I've come across similar framing to what I have used before but with an MDF top, and various others.  Other than the two lines descending to a fiddle yard, I've no ability to run roads or the like below the railway, so this is primarily keeping on a level.  Any thoughts or suggestions on the best way forward?

Maybe use an open framed approach using 9mm ply for the formers and the track bed. Built correctly it should certainly be strong enough, and shouldn't be that heavy. Certainly lighter than chipboard with 2" x 1" softwood framework.

The formers could also have holes cut into them to lighten more if required. It's really how light do you want it, without sacrificing strength.

3 posts in a couple of days, I'd have a lay down if I were you.  :jester:

No 1 = NOT Chipboard, it's heavy and swells with temperature change.

No 2 = Not 2 x 1 from a DIY Store, it warps.

No 3 = Not MDF, same reasons as chipboard.

My preferred choice is 9mm Ply for the top and sides, with about 3 inch deep sides and blocks to support the Ply top that cant warp.
