TPE new trains

TPE Nova 1 set 802210 working 9E09, 09.25 Liverpool Lime Street to Newcastle, at Deighton on the outskirts of Huddersfield on 13th November 2019.

 

 

As part of Network Rail's current proposals for the TransPennine Route Upgrade, along this part of the route the formation here will (revert to) a four track layout.  The plans envisage that the current Up and Down Huddersfield lines will become 'local lines' for services calling at the two intermediate stations between Huddersfield and Ravensthorpe at Thornhill LNW Junction.  A pair of new tracks will be added to accommodate TransPennine services.

 

The proposals from Network Rail suggest electrification of lines between Huddersfield and Leeds is on the cards.  If I was a betting man though I'd wager that, in the final proposals and business case, the new TransPennine tracks will be electrified, but to save costs, the pair of 'local lines' won't be.

Would anyone be so shortsighted as to do that - oh wait, no wires Stalybridge to Huddersfield.

 

It depends if Northern can procure more electrics as surely that would be similar to the Northwest then with main routes under wires.

I doubt the cost savings would be worthwhile compared to the flexibility of having all 4 lines wired. Any bridge lifts/ rebuilds will have to span all 4, and those are one of the more expensive parts of an electrification. Grid connections are another particularly expensive part and that'll be independent of how many lines get wired.

Sticking wires over plain line isn't bargain basement cheap, but it's not where the major costs are.

A few from Liverpool Lime Street on 22nd November, when there was a gathering of TPE's new Nova fleet.

 

Nova 2 397007 arrives with 5M83, 09.50 Preston Croft Street Sidings to Liverpool Lime Street...

 

 

Followed a short time later by Nova 1 802206 which arrived as 5F98, 11.36 Edge Hill Intercity Depot to Liverpool Lime Street.

 

 

Then there was a threesome - ooh err missus - as another Nova 1, 802215, joined the party arriving as 9M07, 09.03 Newcastle to Liverpool Lime Street.

 

Once 802215 had left with 9E12, 12.25 Liverpool Lime Street to Newcastle, 68026 Enterprise and Nova 3 set TP11 arrived with 1F60, 10.38 York to Liverpool Lime Street, and the Nova 1, Nova 2 and Nova 3 line up was complete.

 

A quick turnaround and 68026 and TP11 headed back east with 1E37, 12.56 Liverpool Lime Street to Scarborough.

Can't get my head round no yellow ends just looks odd

From a railway man’s perspective, I can fully understand that Russ.  After over 50 years of yellow on the front end of motive power, it must take some getting use to.

It's less odd if you've been following what's been happening abroad, but it is a bit weird in a UK sense.

For me, the funny thing is I look at UK trains without yellow ends, and notice it, but I look at overseas trains without yellow ends, and it barely registers.

I do think UK operators have gone for darker ends though, most European operators have a light area on the front, though not necessarily yellow.

It's just a long shunt really isn't it, due to there not being enough platforms & sidings at Middlesbrough station to accommodate the extra train services?

I'm over in the UK for a few days and as I am in Leeds hoped to see some new TPE trains.  Thursday I saw an 802 working a Liverpool Newcastle but nothing else apart from 185's. Friday it was all 185's when I got a bit of time.

 

This afternoon  I managed 45 minutes at Copley Hill. I saw 4 or 5 eastbound workings running very close together, all 185's. Finally at about 15.45 I saw my first Nova 3 pulled by 68030 heading east 30 minutes late. Westbounds were all 185's. TPE were obviously having a bit of a bad afternoon as most of the trains were late. I did get some photos but as stupid me left the correct lead in France I can't upload them.

I got left at and had a good hour (1.00pm - 2.00pm) on a chilly & misty Newton- Le -Willows station today whilst her indoors went doing some shoppain at a nearby garden centre, and i was lucky enough to see a few that are still new to me, inc' a couple of 68's, 028 & 030, and an unbranded 802 203. and a passing 66, 66 778 on a biomass train.

I had a couple of hours on Leeds this afternoon and also saw 68030 and 028 with 028 running the normal way round. 802 203 also ran through with Edinburgh Waverley showing on the carriage side displays. Camera battery had gone flat so no photos.

Can anyone please tell me the names of 028 & 030? My three year old platform 5 book is well out of date and so has no names for them in it. They passed me that fast today that i only really got the numbers off the pics' later when i got home.  802 203 was very well patronised and about another 30 folks got on it at Newton.L.W. at 1.42pm.

You are more than welcome. 

 

Indeed they were. They were worn originally by 87028 & 87030. It's a nice touch that modern/current freight operators remember previous classes of locos and names. It's especially nice that the TPE 68s have been named because they are a relatively small fleet of just 14 locos and they are going to be used on specific routes/diagrams.

I've now got back home and have been able to download and view my photos.   Here's 68030 Black Douglas on the east end of it's set on Saturday 30th.

It was a bit dark and gloomy at Copley Hill.

Starting tomorrow (Sunday 15th) TPE the services to Middlesbrough are extended to Redcar!

With the start of the new timetable today  class 802/2 Nova 1s are now  working some of the Manchester Airport - Newcastle services.

 

Here is 802208 at Colne Bridge, Huddersfield with 1P25, 12.13 Manchester Airport to Newcastle.

 

68022 Resolution and a Nova 3 set was also about working, 1F64, 12.27 York to Liverpool Lime Street.  The service had been cancelled between Scarborough and York.
