With the start of the new timetable today  class 802/2 Nova 1s are now  working some of the Manchester Airport - Newcastle services.

Here is 802208 at Colne Bridge, Huddersfield with 1P25, 12.13 Manchester Airport to Newcastle.

68022 Resolution and a Nova 3 set was also about working, 1F64, 12.27 York to Liverpool Lime Street.  The service had been cancelled between Scarborough and York.

Those two pictures highlight the best and worst looking trains on the network today...........

The 802s are just typical modern bland and boring IMO. The others, I like the look when it's the 68 leading (other than directly head-on, they're ugly at that angle), from the other end though...

Some might disagree...(!)

Seen at York on 10th December. That's 801 207 on the left working a York-KX train

Question. Which design do you think will have the longest life-span? Answer in about 30 years time, perhaps?:D

Cheers

I wouldn't be surprised if it were the Pacers. Though not because there's anything particularly wrong with the 800s, just that as inter city trains there's an amount of glamour associated with them which means the money to replace them might be more forthcoming than the money to replace the cheapest trains money can buy that operate unprofitable services many miles away from Whitehall.

The HSTs have lasted a long time though, even though they've been drifting towards more secondary roles for quite a while now, and there's a long history of railway rolling stock doing just that. It happened with Deltics, it happened with A4s, it happened with HSTs. So when the 800s are eventually replaced who knows, might well be the same thing there. They'll be replaced on the services they were originally built for, and probably reduced in numbers, but not gone altogether.

Think i'm more concerned with the safety of the new stuff though, more than the looks, the pic' above makes the 142 look well chunky stood beside that slim feeble looking thing .

The 800 has a substantial amount of metal behind the shiny fibreglass.

Check out the Winsford incident in 1999 to see how 142s fare in a collision.

Or Liverpool Lime St in 1991.

Quite agree, vehicles might finish up at a strange angle in a minor collision involving an IET but at least the body and undergubbins are still attached to each other.   Unlike the effect of a collision involving a 142 where the underframe and body parted company.

Is it really fair to compare a collision between a Class 87 hauled full WCML express hitting a stationary pair of 142s at 50 mph with the outcome of a low speed depot collision between 2 much more evenly matched trains?

A quick once over and a "B" exam at SP and the Pacer was back in service by Tuesday.

I’ve not followed this topic much but I’ve not heard much about TPE handing back some of it’s Class 185’s.  Has that idea been shelved?  With the Nova 3 sets, is the loco at the “east” end of the set or “west”?

They should be on the west end but at least one set was running the other way round 2 weeks ago.

Ssshh.....

I said they would be missed (mostly) when they're destined for the oxy acet.

Oddly enough I will miss that bone jarring excursion on one of the Worlds Greatest Railway Journeys from Preston to Accrington and

hope to see one on the ELR at one point.

Probably.  Although the impact speed at Winsford was estimated at something a bit over double the likely impact speed at Leeds what matters is the results of the force involved.  And in the case of the rear Pacer its bodies were both forced 2 metres  forward from the underframes - and that isn't going to happen with an IET at a c.50mph impact speed even if its vehicles finish up out of line.

Don't forget Winsford was mentioned in response to a comment that a 142 looks 'well chunky' next to an IET and the reality is that Winsford showed that it isn't as 'chunky' as it might look when involved in a collision at any sort of speed.

Had a ride about yesterday on TPE, bit of a disaster as they seem to unaware the timetables changed last week, this no drivers.  Loads of trains cancelled with that excuse, the loadings on the 185's was unsafe, just a joke sadly.  The Class 68 was fine (5 Coaches) and the IET's seemed fine.

TPE should be opening 1st Class to standing passengers, I sat in there as not standing for an hour.

The Cross Country Voyagers were standing room only around Leeds as normal, very sad as the HST's are dumped from LNER and Cross Country passengers have no choice.   'What use is a disabled toilet' If you cannot get to it for passengers!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you record the voices of the disgruntled passengers and any apologetic announcements - you can use them in a sound installation when someone finally does a 185 :D

  • 2 weeks later...

31-12-'19. Newton -le-Willows station, 68 022 thunders through from Liverpool at 1.14pm, the usual 68 hauled train going the other way towards Liverpool just a few minutes earlier had a 185 unit on it instead.-_-

There were four class 68s and Mark5 Nova 3 sets diagrammed for Liverpool Lime Street-Scarborough services on 2nd January 2019.

Here is 68027 'Splendid' with Nova 3 set TP09 at Colne Bridge, on the outskirts of Huddersfield, with 1F64, 11.34 Scarborough to Liverpool Lime Street.

There were also four class 802/2 Nova 1 sets diagrammed on various Manchester Airport-Newcastle and Liverpool Lime Street-Edinburgh services.

Here is unbranded 802218 at Colne Bridge with 1P24, 11.43 Newcastle to Manchester Airport.

Waiting on Deighton station on 7th January 2020 to photograph 5Z42, which comprised three Northern Pacers heading for scrap, TPE 68022 'Resolution' with Nova 3 set TP13 passed through working a late running 1F52, 05.34 Scarborough to Liverpool Lime Street, which in the event terminated at Manchester Victoria.

The 1F52 (as above) is the train I boarded at Stalybridge on my commute into Manchester this morning - and yes the controllers cancelled (terminated early) the Liverpool leg of this train just before it arrived at Stalybridge.

Whilst this did not affect me (this time), "Turning back" a late train is really hated by passengers - especially if their final destination is an airport.
