BANGKOK Mass Transit System (BTS) has awarded contracts worth a total of Baht 10.9bn ($US 305m) for two fleets of metro trains. Siemens will supply 22 four-car Inspirosets while CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles, China, will supply a further 24 four-car trains.

At the risk if straying into contentious territory, I can't help noticing that (a) David Cameron's frequent trips to China appear to yield very little result and (b ) Siemens appear to be much better at selling things than any UK company, probably because the German government backs their industry in a way ours doesn't.

It's like wind farms. The Dutch and to a lesser extent, Belgians have creamed off many hundreds of millions of Euros from this sector, dominating the construction and building a whole new fleet which is increasingly working in the offshore oil sector. They have a cabinet minister whose job it is to ensure that this happens. Danish national energy group (an unfortunate acronym which appears to offend the filters!) are a main player in the sector, too.

A German colleague told me a while ago, that the British In/Out Referendum is receiving very little attention in the German press, being generally regarded as an internal power struggle within British politics between two equally useless alternatives. It's hard to disagree.
