RMweb Premium Atilla Posted February 26, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 26, 2018 These look superb. Can anyone tell me roughly how long the full brakes lasted in service until please?
jwealleans
The GNRS publication I have doesn't have withdrawal dates for many of these, but those it does list are between 1938 and 1940.
Edwardian
The more observant amongst you might have noticed that my other topics have stagnated somewhat lately. I got distracted, which in my case is easily done. I have followed some other topics bemoaning the current non-availability of the Ian Kirk coaches via Coopercraft and the lack of suitable coaches to go with the forthcoming Locomotion Stirling Single. Another comment also suggested that the original Kirk mouldings could be improved upon. This got my little grey cells working overtime, the result of which is I have produced some basic coach kits for GNR 6 wheel coaches available via my Shapeways shop. Currently available are the following (which just happen to represent the vehicles in the vintage train behind the Stirling Single as part of the 1938 Flying Scotsman launch). So the following are now available: GNR Dia 84 First: https://www.shapeways.com/product/FWN3FYE26/gnr-dia-84-first-6-wheel-carriage-basic-kit?optionId=64889806 Dia 84.jpg GNR Dia 155 Composite https://www.shapeways.com/product/B3YFW7XNQ/gnr-dia-155-composite-carriage-6-wheel-carriage?optionId=64889820 Dia 155.jpg GNR Dia 245 Third https://www.shapeways.com/product/PWCYCAZW6/gnr-dia-245-third-6-wheel-carriage-basic-kit?optionId=64889840 Dia 245.jpg GNR Dia 303 Full Brake https://www.shapeways.com/product/XM3CMGDVW/gnr-dia-303-full-brake-6-wheel-carriage-basic-ki?optionId=64889823 Dia 303.jpg The models come in kit form: Kit Form.jpg They feature sides, roof, ends and solebars with the remaining components being left to the purchaser to source from their favourite supplier. Why kit form? It is the most economical way based on Shapeways' current pricing model with the added advantage that I can control which surfaces have the smoothest finish. All mouldings are only available in FUD which gives a good finish. The following photos show the mouldings with a single coat of Halford's Filler Primer applied but no other surface finishing. IMG_3598.JPG IMG_3600.JPG IMG_3601.JPG IMG_3602.JPG IMG_3604.JPG IMG_3605.JPG The first prototype after starting the teaking process: IMG_3613.JPG IMG_3615.JPG When time permits I will start a new topic on their assembly including the necessary 6 wheel chassis. These look superb. I'm sold on the concept. The prices for FUD are manageable in this kit format, and compare well with the cost of a new set of etchings. Presumably the 6-wheel coach fittings you already produce would be suitable? If so, no need to source castings.
MikeTrice
I have started a separate thread on how to construct these: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/131710-building-and-completing-my-3d-printed-gnr-coaches/

MikeTrice
I believe a number went into departmental use on withdrawal.
MikeTrice
It seems a long time since I have updated this topic so with a small number of new 3D models available it is long overdue. First off I have recently added some 4mm North Eastern Railway ventilators and lamps suitable for Clerestory Carriages. Each print contains 60 of each resulting in 120 items overall: https://www.shapeways.com/product/LNWT7NRV5/ner-torpedo-vents-and-lamps-for-clerestory-coaches Secondly I have produced a set of mouldings to upgrade the old Lima J50 body comprising replacement chimney, dome, tank fillers and under boiler: https://www.shapeways.com/product/AS9BF4KHM/lima-j50-upgade-kit Use of the parts(originally printed on my Photon) can be seen here: Finally, something I have been working on for my own use, a replacement body for the original style Bachmann LNER V2. Unfortunately putting the whole body up on Shapeways would probably be cost prohibitive however a common upgrade people have made in the past is to replace the smokebox door, streamlined dome, superheater covers and snifter valve. As a result I have taken those elements from my V2 and made them available as an upgrade kit. Unfortunately it will not resolved the lack of "hump" on the boiler/firebox: https://www.shapeways.com/product/J4DXB4SSN/upgrade-kit-for-original-style-Bachmann-lner-br-v2 Edited February 28, 2020 by MikeTrice

Personally I've replaced the entire body with a Graeme King resin body. Done three he's not doing more. Am I correct in thinking that it's s clean cut on the boiler? If you did produce a full body I'd be interested. Thanks for your time David

In the case of the above image it has been cut at the back of the straight portion of the boiler if that is what you are getting at. A full body on Shapeways would be in excess of £100 so not really viable however I have been considering just doing the incorrect part hence the cut off front above.
micklner
I have used the NER Vents/Lamps, they are excellent improvement on the D&S castings supplied in those kits. Luckily I bought mine before the huge price hikes on the Bre Exit taking place. Sadly the prices are now just silly. It is a great shame that there are no companies appearing to be starting a similar set up to Shapeways, in the UK so far?.
