Looking forward to the Restaurant Car Vents. They are such a pain to represent (well for me anyway).

Thanks Mike for bothering. I think this 3d stuff is a huge step forward for modelling.

Phil

Well here they are. You get 18 and that works out at about £1 each. Bargain IMO if you have ever tried to make these vents.

I have a Triplet and a Kitchen Diner to do as well as replacing some 'home made ones' on another Triplet and possibly adding some to other catering carriages on Peterborough North.

My advice is, get some and share them if you have too many (sort of crowd funding?)

Lovely work from MT and Shapeways. The quality is first class.

Phil

I have made some changes to the following products in my Shapeways Shop:

1. GNR Torpedo Ventilators and Gas Lamps.

These have been modified so that the gas lamps have a smaller (2mm) mounting spigot.

2. GNR 6 Wheel Coach Axlebox and springs.

These have now been withdrawn.

3. GNR 6 Wheel Coach Fittings.

These feature beefed up versions of the previous axleboxes and springs plus a set of 4 sprung buffer bases and 6 compartments worth of torpedo vents and (modified) gas lamps. Available for 1, 2 or 3 coaches.

I am very persuaded by the GN Coach Fittings sprues for the 6-wheelers.

Is there any possibility of a GE set?

The more observant amongst you might have noticed that my other topics have stagnated somewhat lately. I got distracted, which in my case is easily done.

I have followed some other topics bemoaning the current non-availability of the Ian Kirk coaches via Coopercraft and the lack of suitable coaches to go with the forthcoming Locomotion Stirling Single. Another comment also suggested that the original Kirk mouldings could be improved upon. This got my little grey cells working overtime, the result of which is I have produced some basic coach kits for GNR 6 wheel coaches available via my Shapeways shop. Currently available are the following (which just happen to represent the vehicles in the vintage train behind the Stirling Single as part of the 1938 Flying Scotsman launch).

So the following are now available:

GNR Dia 84 First:

GNR Dia 303 Full Brake

The models come in kit form:

post-3717-0-32817200-1519479754_thumb.jpg

They feature sides, roof, ends and solebars with the remaining components being left to the purchaser to source from their favourite supplier. Why kit form? It is the most economical way based on Shapeways' current pricing model with the added advantage that I can control which surfaces have the smoothest finish.

All mouldings are only available in FUD which gives a good finish. The following photos show the mouldings with a single coat of Halford's Filler Primer applied but no other surface finishing.

When time permits I will start a new topic on their assembly including the necessary 6 wheel chassis.

I have been wondering why people don't use 3D print to make kits rather than complete bodies. You show that it does indeed work perfectly well.

It looks a great way of doing things because you're not paying for empty space, and you can determine the orientation of each part separately, getting the most out of the printing process. Looking at them, if you can put together an Airfix kit then these won't be any problem at all.

I've been slowly doing the others in the 1938 set in MDF and card, but I've not even started drawings for full brakes. My birthday's coming up, so I've put forward the idea that two full brakes would be an easy birthday present option.

Those look really good, Mike.

Where does that leave you on the issue of construction methods?  Printing, styrene in the Portrait, or oil board?

I think a lot depends on why you are producing a model. In this case it was to prove a point to myself and make them available for other people to obtain. In that respect printing was the obvious answer. Small personal projects on the other hand would still be on the Portrait.
