kirtleypete Posted June 3, 2016 Share Posted June 3, 2016 With Doncaster 0 gauge show tomorrow it seems like a good time to begin a thread here for my company which I will keep updated by describing and illustrating the models I'm working on. For those that don't know me I specialise in commission built buildings and layouts in all scales from 4mm up to 16mm, and also produce a range of printed accessories for 0 gauge and gauge 1. I have a range of modelling books and another range on French railways, all of which are available from Amazon. My website is www.kirtleymodels.com - everything I produce is described on there. At the moment I am building an 0 gauge layout for a customer based on the Settle and Carlisle which will be delivered during August; it includes a branch terminus so here are some pictures of that section. The station building is a model of Barnoldswick. The space available was just 9' x 2' so it was a squeeze fitting it all in. The line will connect with the rest of the layout in due course. I've also built the station building for the main station, based on Lazonby. The roof has been sprayed with Dullcote since I took the pictures - on an indoor layout the shine seen here won't be an issue. Now I've got to make sure all the other clocks on the layout show the same time! I'll post more pictures as work progresses; I'm working on the loco shed at the moment. If you look on www.kirtleymodels.com they are all illustrated. Doncaster GOG show was really good, an excellent venue which is much easier to get to than Halifax or Cleckheaton from where I live. I've been working on the loco shed area of the LMS layout I'm building: The 70' turntable comes from Realmodel in Germany and needs a bit of work to make it look British. It comes ready made, with a coreless motor and DCC sound decoder so it is operated just like a loco. The sound decoder includes the sounds of the turntable, but also background sounds such as passing trains, birdsong and even a thunder storm! It wasn't cheap, but it's superb. I'm using my Lionheart Pannier as my test loco. I built an LMS standard signal box to make a change from the Midland boxes at the stations. The branch to the terminus station can be seen running along the top of the retaining wall, climbing towards the left of the picture. This is the turntable after being weathered and detailed. The layout looks good ... although I'm not sure what the GW driver would think about being drafted into to test LMS lines! You might have increased the 'GWR' is best idea among the crew there!!! kirtleypete Posted June 8, 2016 Author Share Posted June 8, 2016 Alongside working on the LMS layout, I've built a couple of buildings for John Smith's new 0 gauge layout 'North Foreland; they'll stand against the backscene at the end of the layout opposite the station building. The scene could do with some figures, but they can be added later. The Thanet Coal Co is modelled on a building in Maidstone which is pictured in the Lightmoor Press book on PO wagons from the area. The pub sign is a picture of the real North Foreland lighthouse...a picture of it will be on the backscene. They best pint of Spitfire in Kent! There's more detailing to do but it's finished enough to photograph. The Skytrex dry stone walls are superb. I'll be adding a bus stop where the people are standing and some swans and ducks on the river. Once the varnish in the river has dried I can take these boards down and move on to the main station. I've only got BR or LBSCR stock so I put on some BR road vehicles to match the train. I've also built Lazonby signal box ready to use at the main station: The LMS used the stone and brown colours from the early 30's onwards, with yellow and black nameboards. I need to add the nameboard when my customer tells me what he wants putting on it, and I've a goods shed and loco shed to build before I deliver them. kirtleypete Posted July 30, 2016 Author Share Posted July 30, 2016 I've been working on buildings this week while the weather has been iffy here in Melton. First there was a GWR loco shed and goods shed in Gauge 1: The shed is an extended Tetbury with a roof vent, if that makes sense! The goods shed had to be no bigger than 16" x 13" which is quite small for Gauge 1; there wasn't room for an office. I've still got to add the crane. Then I've been finishing the loco shed for the 7mm LMS layout. It has to be kept separate at the moment as it will straddle a baseboard join. Sorry about the dustbins! kirtleypete Posted August 15, 2016 Author Share Posted August 15, 2016 I delivered the LMS layout to Pembrokeshire this weekend, to a three hundred year old house - it had to be installed in a room on the third floor with a floor that slopes in four different directions at once with a hump in the middle just to make things interesting! The main thing is that it's up and running, but I've got to go back to finish things off which is why there are no new pictures at the moment. These pictures show the end of the layout; the lighthouse on the backscene is the real North Foreland structure. The station building will be based on Whitstable. kirtleypete Posted August 20, 2016 Author Share Posted August 20, 2016 I'm working on some 4mm scale models of the buildings at Syston station, on the Midland main line north of Leicester. The period is 1960. This is the station building, a standard MR design. I'm waiting for some laser cut bargeboards to arrive from York Modelmaking to finish it off, and the perforated panels that go below the glazed canopy sections. The station house was built in the same style...when it's in place the garden will be modelled in full. I've also nearly finished the South signal box, which was a standard Midland box and so unlike any other on the system! It will need weathering once it's complete. The windows are laser cut items which saves a lot of time. I've got the Midland Counties house and the goods shed on the way so there will more pictures before long. kirtleypete Posted August 28, 2016 Author Share Posted August 28, 2016 (edited) I've just got back from installing the 0 gauge Settle and Carlisle layout in it's new home. It wasn't ideal for taking pictures but these should give an impression of how it looks. The long siding beyond the turntable is the DCC programming track; it's ideally placed. The Pannier is my test loco; there are some very sharp curves, the width of the layout is only 11', so with a long wheelbase the Pannier is a good loco to use. It has to be ready for the NEC so no pressure! The gap beyond the station building is where the goods shed will be, that's the next model. The station building is supposed to look as though it is a replacement for an original wooden structure....the inspiration was Whitstable which was built in 1915. I've added some wooden fencing to keep the railway and public areas separate. I'm aiming to have these three boards finished by the end of next week, all being well. Hardly anything of the inside can be seen as the rear of the box faces the viewer but I've put in basic detail. The stairs are from York Modelmaking, a superb product in laser cut plastic. kirtleypete Posted October 30, 2016 Author Share Posted October 30, 2016 I've been doing more scenery on a Welshpool and Llanfair layout I've been working on for three or four years now and it's nearly finished at last. I didn't do the track, just the scenery and some of the buildings. My customer built these two structures and he's made a lovely job of them. He did the two Llanfair buildings too. It's unusual to see a narrow gauge station given plenty of space like this. I'll be going back for one more visit once all the ground cover has dried. Lovely to admire such good workmanship. I'm interested in the brick finishes that you achieve, are these some kind of embossed plasticard or card product, please?
