kirtleypete
I use my own brick papers (www.kirtleymodels.com) but my customer has used Redutex sheets and I must admit they look better than I'd expected. They're self adhesive which I don't like because it doesn't give you any adjustment time. If I'm honest it's probably just professional jealousy!!Peter
kirtleypete
I've begun work on a large 4mm scale layout based on ex GNR lines in Yorkshire in 1937 - some pictures of the first section are below. I'll keep posting as work progresses. The terminus is based on Bradford Adolphus Street station. The track is the new Legacy product from DCC Concepts which seems to be excellent; I'll be using Peco finescale points with it. kirtleypete
I've finished the structure of the overall roof now, based on the one at Adolphus Street in Bradford like the station building. The spans were laser cut for me by York Modelmaking, and a superb job they've made of them. This is the real roof, much larger as it spans a much wider area but hopefully I've captured some of the same look. The model roof measures 285mm side to side. There will be a glazed screen across the end, but that will be added after painting the main structure. Peter

kirtleypete
My customer and I have agreed that the side walls need opening up; although what I have done follows the real thing it's no use on a model as you can't see what's going on inside. It's going to be an interesting challenge altering it! Watch this space........................ Peter
kirtleypete
I've decided that it isn't going to be possible to open up the side of the exisiting model so I'm going to begin again - new roof spans are on order. In the meantime I'll be at the Reading 0 gauge trade show on Saturday, with some new books among other goodies. Peter
kirtleypete
I've done the replacement overall roof thanks to York Modelmaking producing a second set of girders for me. This roof is a bit longer and much more open at the sides so it should be a lot more user friendly. Now that the artwork is done, of course, anyone can order the roof girders from York Modelmaking. The are cut in 1.5mm acrylic which I stick with Evostick. Peter

kirtleypete
The overall roof is about finished; all I need to do now is fill in the gaps around the station building. It's removable for obvious reasons which means it has had to be made strong enough to put up with being moved. It looked lovely when all the cream paint was bright and shiny but west Yorkshire in the 1930's meant it needed to be covered in sh........sorry, heavily weathered. I must kill the shine on the platform surface. Peter
kirtleypete
Unfortunately the 00 layout in the pictures above is not going to proceed, it will be built in EM gauge by another comapny though all being well I will still be doing the buildings. I'll update on progress from time to time. Peter

kirtleypete
I'm hoping that my customer will still want me to do all the buildings but I'm waiting for him to make a decision. I'd rather not have to take the overall roof and station to the tip! Peter
Edwardian
I'm hoping that my customer will still want me to do all the buildings but I'm waiting for him to make a decision. I'd rather not have to take the overall roof and station to the tip! Peter Clearly, if your customer does not want these stunning buildings, though I imagine he will want them, there would be people here who'd gladly offer to take them off your hands! They are exceptional.
kirtleypete
I was joking about the tip ! I think he will want to keep them and let me carry on with the rest of it. Pete
kirtleypete
Bristol 0 gauge show is coming up a week on Sunday, so I'm building a model of Nailsworth station building to put on the stand. I've always liked it but I've never had the chance to model it until now. I'll have all the books, printed papers etc. there as usual of course and if there's time maybe a second model to tempt you! kirtleypete
I've finished the model based on Nailsworth station building to put on the stand at Bristol on Sunday. It's a local station and hopefully people will recognise it....for my money it's one of the prettiest stations on the Midland. Finally the sun has come out so I've been able to take some pictures! kirtleypete
Nailsworth station didn't sell at Bristol so I'll have it on the stand at Kettering in March. Peter
kirtleypete
I was asked to build a 4' x 2' 7mm scale diorama based on this painting of Horns Bridge at Chesterfield, so my customer could use it for photographing his models. It's a fascinating place, with the GCR passing under the MR main line and the viaduct in the background carrying the LDEC line to Market Place station. Fitting all that into a 4' length wasn't going to be easy! This is what I've done.... The original plan was to paint the viaduct onto the backscene but it wouldn't have worked with the right angles bend at each corner. The hills were added instead to give the scene depth. The track is C&L with two B6 turnouts and the signal was made up from Wizard Models parts. The box is plywood with aluminium angle protecting the edges. The backscenes are from ID backscenes, printed on self adhesive vinyl. Peter

kirtleypete
I'll be on stand 67 at the Gauge 0 show at Doncaster tomorrow. As well as the usual goodies I'll have the buildings from my layout 'Langstone Harbour' for sale as this is not now going to be completed. There will also be a selection of my French railway books at £5 each to clear them. Peter
alant
Hi Peter, Can you advise what you make the G1 buildings from please. I assume they are clad with your own brickpapers. Also, I notice you say they can be made "showerproof", how do you do that? Thanks, Alan.
kirtleypete
I buy my plastic sheet from Stephen Webster plastics in 5' x 2' 6" sheets Alan, so even the biggest buildings can be done from one sheet. I use 80thou/2mm sheet for the walls, cut out with a Stanley knife, and brace the inside with stripwood from B&Q. The glazing is rigid 3mm clear plastic from Ariel, also sold by B&Q. I do use my papers for some surfaces in Gauge 1; if the paper is soaked in diluted PVA after the building is finished it will withstand a brief wetting without being damaged. It also stretches the paper as it dries and gets rid of any bubbles. Peter
alant
Thanks Peter. The buildings look great. Alan.
kirtleypete
It's a while since I posted on here about current projects so here are a few pictures of a 7mm scale Midland engine shed layout, based on Ilkley. It's on three boards, total sixe 12' x 2' and it will eventually become part of a much larger layout based on Trent. This is a small project to give my customer something to use while the big layout is being built. The track is built from C&L components. Unfortunately the layout is going to be DC, something I normally won't do but I've made an exception for this as my customer has some very old loco's which would be difficult to convert. I've been using my LBSC 2-4-0 to check the clearances a being outside framed it's as wide as anything the layout is likely to run. The turntable is a 50' one from Dave Smith, a lovely kit to put together. Peter Edited July 21, 2017 by kirtleypete
