No problem at all David, they must look impressive all together.

Some more work done today on UTU4 and the DBSO.

Window frames and 'blinkers' added to the DBSO. These were cut on the cameo out of 10thou. The RCH covers were also done this way. I need to get the headlight surrounds done next. Question for anyone who knows, what are the 'blinkers' for on the DVT as they seem to have been fitted in Anglia days?

Cruel close up...

Next up was the UTU,

I've now made the small window openings on one side by blanking most of the existing windows. I did this differently by making a blank on the cameo and the profiling it once fitted. I wish I have done all the windows this way, far less filler and time to get it smooth.

The below photo shows the blanks before paint and filler. It looks like I was sloppy with the gluing, however this was actually glue I rubbed into the joints after they were secure to act as a rough filler. This process works quite well if there is no detail nearby.

Then once smoothed and painted.

Not many photos from today. I managed to get the new transfers (Railtec) onto the 5 CDA to HAA conversions and then give them a blast of frame dirt. These are now re-assembled awaiting a heavier weathering.

A bit more progress on 999606.

Some more detailing bits added and the window frames attached, I did these on the plotter in the end.

Chassis and roof need some more work, but hoping to get the sides finished first.

Not the best photos admittedly.

The DBSO is now also in for painting starting with the yellow panel.

I've been trying to remember how to use an airbrush again, been a long time since I last tried. This was needed for the DRS Blue on the DBSO. Definitely needs another coat at least, I managed to miss most of the tumblehome.

UTU4 and DCP's RTOV are also progressing through the painting progress and are shown here on DCP's 'Gorsey Lane'. Since the photos, UTU4 has had the cantrail stripe painted. I think I will leave the roof mods for now (repositioning the vents), but will finish the chassis and body end details.

Now looking for inspiration for a follow up project, something simpler that the UTU, but also in era for WBQ (1998-2004), any suggestions?

DRS Class 37/6 37608 - Warrington Bank Quay

I don't know the OO market so well, so sorry if any of these are things you can easily buy off the shelf. These ideas might be way off the mark, but how about the HST with buffers? Or the class 37s that could go through the channel tunnel? A few photos from WBQ 1998.

Enjoy following your posts. All the best,

Dave

Dare i suggest ?....:D One thing i do remember from my weekend visits to 'Fads' DIY in that era was the amount and spread that the weeds were left to grow around the station, and the amount of rubbish left on and around the tracks...not including the 142!

Thanks Everyone,

Just a few quick photos (not the best, poor lighting) of the latest progress.

UTU is vinyled but the chassis and body-ends need detailing and finishing.

The DBSOs have been painted and are at the vinyl stage, with one side of the DRS example nearly finished (BILs missing). Then the steps and axle box covers need to go yellow. Before the vehicle can be glazed and re-assembled.

Thanks again Saxokid.

Today i started the next project. Maybe a bit too ambitious, but my plan is to turn an Oxford Rail Mk3a TSO into a Mk3 sleeper. Not decided yet whether to make a SLE/SLEP/SLED yet. The tricky bit is i dont want to repaint most of the livery, only the falcon grey and some of the roof. Still working out the best way to move the roof hatch  at one end, might have to do similar to jack on his 222. The window blanks were drawn up and plot on the cameo cutter. Not obvious  from the photo, but there is alot of tidyingup of the bodyside needed to get it smooth. There is also the tail lights to fit on the ends.

If it all goes pear shaped, it's a repaint into Caledonian Sleeper colours.

As it happens Dave, I did start converting a HST to a buffer fitted version (to become 43080). Below is an old photo, when I have the courage I've got to cut out the guard's windows at the rear of the van area.

I do like those EPS 37/6s did look very smart indeed! Always wanted to have a crack at the Gen Van too, but can't see me doing that any time soon.

A bit quiet update wise this last week or so, a few projects have been progressing in the background but a mix of a couple of false starts with spraying and then running out of masking tape has slowed progress.

I had started spraying the BUO and RLO into Caledonian Sleeper grey and dark purple, to me the Phoenix Purple and violet don't look right, especially the latter and at first they looked as if the colours were reversed (so I sprayed the BUO up in reverse colours to test the theory). In certain lights the purple looks acceptable but not overly happy.

IMG_20200524_180404.jpg.c172db61c337f4569197df759f959125.jpg

Another batch of VGAs are going through the works, these are a simple rattle can repaint and re-vinyl job so progressing fairly rapidly. To add a bit of variety, these are having Railfreight Red ends rather than yellow. Another example is staying in EWS.

IMG_20200525_174736.jpg.bd529e679b248caf8214a4ab34e2c6a6.jpg

Finally the next HAA/HFAs are going through the repaint stage, ahead of the next lot of CDA conversions. These mainly started out as EWS HFAs but will go into a mix of mainly yellow and red, with the odd EWS, brown and blue thrown in for good measure. These are now waiting on me adding transfers.

IMG_20200528_223806.jpg.0b0151ebdf61d3053cd3f81ceb0041b7.jpg

Hopefully with supplies turning up shortly, more progress might be achieved over the weekend.

Stay safe,

Still trying to get the get the hang of this airbrushing malarky, can't say I'm enjoying it as I have more problems than successes it seems but I think I'm making progress.

Although in my usual form I don't start things simple, this is exhibit A.

A nice basic livery to start with... The loco was originally 37431 in Intercity Mainline but a few years ago I prepared it to become '419 in Compass livery with the side windows blanked, This loco got as far as primer, when its sister received a poor coat of blue and they were both consigned to the 'future problems' box.

So whilst looking for lockdown projects, '431 was returned to the queue. As I have now turned my layout clock backwards, compass was no longer an option and I have previously done a /4 in EWS (Hornby RailRoad conversion). I've always liked triple grey and seeing Dave's post above of the ex-nightmare stock /6s got me thinking.

'431 is now set to become '611 or '612. Probably the former as I believe I've worked on that loco.

I've taken the liberty of using Executive dark grey instead of internation blue for the roof, simply because I prefer the look and it looks grey in the photos.

Here's the progress to date, there are a few bits of re-work needed on the paint and the RCH jumpers need adding. Then it is onto adding the DRS branding.

We've all been there with airbrushing. It's one of those skills that takes time and practice. Very rewarding when you get it right. Persevere and eventually you'll have more success than failures.

Thank you both, I'll persevere anyway (Caley purple doesn't come in a rattle can :) ).

Just some quick photos of the 37 and the Mk3 SLE. I ended up doing a lot more work to the body side of the sleeper so I was happy with it, so a repaint is in order. It will therefore go into purple and violet instead of Intercity. I've also now done most of the roof mods with the access hatch moved at one end and the roe-vacs replaced with the single vent at one end. I just need to add the two handles to the modified hatch. Then I need to see about adding the tail light covers to the body-end.

The 37 has had the RCH connectors added but needs some wire for the cables. The grilles have also been painted black.

  • 2 weeks later...

Afternoon all,

A few bits and pieces progressing in the background after one of those manic weeks.

37611 now has most of its transfers on, with just the cantrail stripe to go (yah), after that it is a case of re-assembly and repairing the chassis (broken buffers).

DSC06931.JPG.e5ef49a21d1cac0545dccbceae92f45d.JPG

A few more VGAs have been going through the paint shop, but the chassis of these require major repair work and new buffers. I think that now makes 7 VGAs that have been resprayed with at least one more awaiting its turn.

The TPO project I started a few years ago has also re-appeared and have now been joined by a Bachmann D.720 which has been converted into a D.729 by modifying the windows amongst a few other changes. One side of this has so far received SPM transfers and awaits re-assembly. A SPM D.726 has also been similarly treated but awaits a new solebar and a repaint of the chassis. The other vehicles are close behind but I am awaiting transfers for these.

DSC06924.JPG.4b525315470037a84ac880afef7e6781.JPG

The makeshift PCV has also seen a splash of red on one side, don't be fooled however as the far side still looks very much like a Mk1 SO. Detailing of the cab front is also required.

Indeed so, the coaches shown above are to become 2904 and 2915. The 3 waiting below are to become 2903, 2916 and 2917 respectively. Lots of window and roof mods to go at, along with the double doors on 2903.

A pair of mk2s are on order to become 2920 & 2921, think they'll be the tricky ones.

Lets see how this goes.
