Since the last post, work has continued slowly on the TPO vehicles with bodyshells nearly ready for transfer preparation. The previously mentioned Stowage Van has now has its windows added but requires some more primer and sanding before it receives a coat of red. A second Stowage Van has now been built, again a Hatchette Mk1. This vehicle however has used sides produced on the Cameo cutter and an learning gained from the previous two Hatchette vehicle, as a result this vehicle came together in the best part of an afternoon and required a fraction of the filler. Once this vehicle has been primed I will add the windows and post some pictures. I aim to get all vehicles ready to receive transfers for now, hopefully in a runnable state.

First off, 2 of the 3 most complete vehicles.

Next the rake as it stands, 2 Southern Prides, 3 Hatchettes and 1 Bachmann. Think I'll wait and finish the rake with 2 Bachmann Stowage Vans when they are released later this year. Oh and a second Replica PCV.

And now for something completely different...

I was wanting to just try out the Cameo cutter a little so decided I'd have a try at doing a wagon. The JMA's bought for National Power worked through Warrington for time (in period as well!) and look pretty impressive to me. So I thought, let's give them a go. Armed with some sheets of 10 and 20 thou, below shows the results of the 1st prototype. Please note there are still many parts of the body to add, most importantly the supports for the upper body at the ends (hence why they aren't parallel in the photos).

I must say I am fairly chuffed with the 1st attempt to the point where I want to try building a few once the design is finished. 3D print the hopper doors and use the TF25 bogies produced by Bachmann (as fitted to the wagons later in their life). Okay they should have the Inside framed LTF25s for this period but I am happy to overlook that for now given the massive stock of bogies I already have.

The end corrugations are Slaters' 7mm Iron Sheets, which line up exactly with the drawings I have.

Wow that wagon looks great! I’ve made one in DB red from a Freightliner HHA, but I stopped at one because it would be very expensive to make a rake. Are you planning on doing a few...it sounds like a cheaper way to do it!

Keep up the great work!

Jack.

Thanks Jack,

I must admit looking at your conversion was one of the reasons I wanted to do it in the first place, yours looks very good indeed (as per the rest of your work). I'll see how the first one or two go and see what they look like once they have been primed. But a rake would certainly look impressive so won't rule it out.

This week has seen work on a different front, with focus shift back to the layout briefly. I've started planning the structures on the Down Platform (simply because they are far simpler). Below shows the start that has been made, there is still a lot of work to do on the base structure before moving to the canopy but hopefully this gives a bit of an indication. I'll go more into detail about its construction and add some more photos if people are interested.

For now...

Another 'Boar on Tour' post, this time just a local trip to sunny Burton Upon Trent for this years DEMU Showcase. (1/2)

Despite being only a 20 minute drive I always take the train to DEMU as I am not a massive fan of the parking around there, this ultimately turned out to be a mistake but more on that later.

To loosely tie this back to WBQ, I did manage to pick up a few small bits and pieces from Replica Railways for the TPO project and a possible model of Test Car 2 that I have been pondering over for too long. To me the Replica MK1 gangways look far better than the Southern Pride card ones. Several ideas were also gained for a possible Class 325 model at some point. These namely being the 3D Printed cabs on the Electra stand and the 64ft Replica Chassis re-wheeled as appear on their stand.

It was good to catch up with a few fellow RM Webbers at the show too, apologies Mike for my pendolino joke, but it appeared too good an opportunity to miss.

Some very nice layouts at the show, so here are a selection of the photos...

First off Devonport Road, some superb modelling and detail on this layout (both stock and scenery), also won extra points in my book for featuring a ramp wagon.

Also, hats off to whoever built this. But does this risk creating the modellers' paradox?

Ebsworth Street won my prize for the most 68's on a layout at one time. Good to see a Caledonian Sleeper BUO and RLO on the layout.

Next up was Sandiacre of this parish, again superbly executed and some very well built Clockwork Ideas tampers. Interestingly I found the layout feels a lot bigger than it actually is, something that doesn't convey over photos.

Although I did point out to one of the operators that my old car was missing from the car park (ideally with WBQ baseboards in the back), should the correct model become available I would be happy to supply it :) (maybe with false plates thought). Hopefully should find out soon whether I will be back at the RTC.

To be continued...

Gone for Burton (2/2)

After leaving the sweltering heat of Burton's town hall, I reckoned I must have spent just over a couple of hours at the show (I could have spent longer but planned to spend the afternoon working on the layout). With only 30 mins of travelling required it looked like some layout progress could be achieved, alas it was not to be.

I had not counted on the hour wait for a Derby bound service, at least when I got to Derby it would be a simple matter of getting a Leicester or London bound train...

Checking RTT having arrived in a surprising sunny Derbados Station, ok a 30 minute wait for the next Leicester service. Excellent, I could grab some photos of the ROG locos, look at the new platforms and job done.

So a quick wander down the platform later...

37800, 47812 &  37611 were sitting in the dock behind ROG HQ. Despite having seen a few of the Europhoenix liveried 37s around Derby before, I still think it is a striking livery but not distasteful. It would have been interesting to see how they would have put the livery on the 47s (I know they tried it on a 56 briefly).

post-13109-0-03248700-1528166924_thumb.jpg

At this point I then thought it best to double check the service I was getting (being somewhat an anxious traveller), the muppet I am had previously forgotten to confirm that the service was actually going to call at Loughborough. It was not, and the next was a mere 90 minutes wait, bother! (Other less forum friendly words may be applicable). My attention was quickly diverted by an engine tone approaching from behind the train crew hut...

37521 & 37421 approaching from the north with a test train heading for the Tec Centre. Being unexpected to me, I had to make do with phone shots.

Next up were some more iconic british locos.

XC Class 43s 43285 & 43207 still looking modern despite their age, will the HST ever look old?

It was around this point (or possibly slightly earlier) that the station observed a minute silence of remembrance, the peace only interrupted by an approaching voyager or meridian.

Then this appeared,

 post-13109-0-77837600-1528168457_thumb.jpg

A Derby to Nottingham and back Northern Belle outing which made a fine sight, with the former 'Tracy Island' leading (I've just read that this loco rather aptly once carried the name 'Stingray' too). Anything could happen in the next half hour.

post-13109-0-01147000-1528168731_thumb.jpg

47 772 'Carnforth T.M.D' brought up the rear.

Indeed the unexpected did occur much to my surprise and that of a fellow enthusiast on the platform.

73962 & 73965 appeared off Etches Park.

post-13109-0-37146900-1528169164_thumb.jpg

At which point, 47 772 ruptured into life, and my meridian arrived.

post-13109-0-51486900-1528169275_thumb.jpg

A 20 minute journey later I alighted outside the Falcon works. A mere 3 hours after leaving DEMU. Still an interesting day and a chance to photograph a variety of traction in some very un-british weather.

Apologies for the rampling posts, I'm blaming it on the lack of sleep.

  • 2 weeks later...

Last weekend I was lucky enough to be roped into operating 'Appledore' built by Roundhouse and in the custody of Phatbob (both of this parish) for 3 days at the GCR Model Show. I must admit going back to analogue operation does feel strange, but hopefully I got the hang of it before Sunday evening. Whilst at the show I also managed to collect the remaining bits from Replica Railways that I didn't remember to get at DEMU.

So begins my next work in progress...

PCV No.2 - FO & MLV Hybrid

PCV No.1 was obtained 2nd hand from Hattons, it was after this that I realised that PCVs were generally marshalled at both ends of a rake. This being similar to the Super BGs on the non-London bound Railnet sets. Not wishing to pay Ebay prices for a second model only to replace the running gear anyway, I decided to do a bit of modelling and use some of the Replica parts to cobble together No.2. It may not end up half as good but it'll be some good practise for work I plan to do to make a 325 at some stage.

The photos below show 2 evenings work so far (a long way still to go), the door openings will be trimmed properly once I have some suitable plasticard to represent the roller shutters (thinking N gauge planking or corrugated iron). One end of a FO body has been removed and an MLV short cab mounted on it. The centre window of this has been blanked. On the inner end, the body has been filed flat to match the prototype.

post-13109-0-97659000-1529527378_thumb.jpg

The chassis is the correct PCV moulding and the detailing parts have been obtained but will be fitted when the bodywork is nearly completed to prevent damage. Should the conversion be finished to a decent standard, then Bachmann B4s will be obtained and fitted as per No.1

In a rather unexpected plot twist, it would appear I have started building a new layout in parallel to WBQ. Even more remarkable is this layout is my first venture into N, Revolution Trains you are very much to blame  :nono: .

The layout should have its own blog shortly under the name 'Lunerigg', but below is a photo of the progress achieved since starting it on Monday. Hopefully this will inspire me to get cracking on WBQ.

Nice one! Those Revolution trains chaps know exactly what they are up to! But their models are sooooo good its hard to resist!

Good luck with the layout and look forward to more WBQ progress and following your new layout progress.

Jeremy

Thanks Jeremy, I've been seeing your photos of all the WCML AC traction for Euston which I am sure is also leading me astray :)  Those Dapol 86s, Mk3 & DVTs look rather nice...

When I compared the Hornby and Revolution offerings of the Pendolino there isn't much contest in terms of quality and detail. The N gauge one wins out.

Ha ha, I once temploted up WBQ in 2mm scale as I was thinking of building it but decided to go for something more simple like Euston!

The quality of N gauge stuff nowadays is exceptional and with Revolution trains having a "penchant" for WCML gear, there is lots of potential for WCML layouts.

I am looking forward to seeing Lunerigg develop, let us know when it gets it's own blog. Will the new layout be based on a specific location? You've made some amazing progress since Monday!

Whilst your avoiding the class 92 thread, make sure you don't stumble on the class 321 thread or the KFAs :). It's great to see them offering so much interesting wcml stock.

All the best

Nice one, maybe 87023 could use those plans to extend Dallam southwards...

Indeed, I must say I am very impressed with the quality of a few of the models I have looked at. Surely a 325 can't be too far off either (especially with a 319 under development).

Thanks Dave, it has now got its own blog which is linked below, but essentially it is based on the part of the WCML through the Lune Gorge adjacent to the M6. The trackplan is roughly that of the Lambrigg Loops.

I fear I may have also failed to steer clear of those threads too. Especially as there are 321 drawings with my name on them... must resist!

Lambrigg never had loops, it had a level crossing but no loops, the nearest were at Grayrigg.

So I had a few hours spare after watching the surprising entertaining (and nail biting) Austrian GP, so it was out with the fresh supply of ballast and pick up from where I left off when I ran out back in December.

When I started...

Approximately 2.5Kg of ballast later (yes I was supposed to be saving some for Lunerigg too, oops), by the close of play...

Still most definitely a work in progress, especially around the pointwork. The grass work also needs tidying up. The idea is hopefully the ballast (most of it) can be glued down within the next few weeks whilst the weather is hot. Hopefully the photos capture a little of the variation in shades/condition of ballast between the different lines and the reballasted sections of track. I must remember next time to take the proper camera...

... And collect the N gauge Pendolino, Doh!

Fortunately the layout seems to have mostly survived the excessive temperatures (the East Midlands seems just that bit cooler that the North West), the only damage I noticed seems to be the expansion of the roadway causing a bit of buckling. TBH I hadn't noticed it until I clouted it, drat. I'm glad that the layout is just out of the direct sunlight for most of the day.

It would appear I have no succumbed to the modelling condition where it becomes compulsory to hack apart perfectly good models, if anyone knows a cure to this please advise  :jester: .

The latest piece of butchery modelling can be seen below and is very early in the modification process, any guesses as to what it might be part of? Please send answers on a postcard to ....

To me it looks like a 'what if' BR Mk3a Suburban LHCS to replace the 57ft non-gangway Mk1s.

Cheers Mick, I'm doomed then.

A bit more progress today experimenting with adding the bodyend taper to the Mk3 body profile. Think I now have most of the information I need to do some plug door Mk3 conversions (Chiltern ones) at a later date.

Hopefully the photos should give a better clue as to what this is going to be part of.
