RMweb Gold Popular Post checkrail Posted March 23, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 23, 2019 (edited) In the end I didn't put the kettle on but went to my local for a celebratory pint. Guest beer was 'Tunnel Vision' from Box Steam Brewery, with a picture of Box Tunnel and a silhouette of IKB on the pump clip. Most appropriate, and a very nice drop. Here are the final two of the cattle train disappearing down the branch towards Earlsbridge. 3603's fireman doesn't seem to be doing much. Photography is great at exposing faults one hadn't noticed. The leading GWR cattle wagon was one of a pair I bought second-hand about 7 years ago, already assembled and painted. A nice job had been done, but I've just realised that a bit of transfer film under the wagon number is obscuring one of the bovine effluent vents. Needs some attention. And looking at this final shot reminds me that I must upgrade this Bachmann AA19 Toad to vacuum braked status to match its fully fitted train. I'd even added Dapol vac pipes and a vac cylinder (bit of an old pencil!) to the Parkside LMS wagon, but clean forgot about the brake van. I suppose the next step could be to build a Parkside 'Beetle' kit. This could make for another bit of interesting tail traffic, dropped off a passenger service at Stoke C. for forwarding to the Earlsbridge market either attached to the branch passenger or to the cattle train as it pauses at the junction. But before that the new cattle wagons need a bit of weathering. John C. Edited March 23, 2019 by checkrail 20
Coach bogie
Were there any fitted AA19? I know of some fitted with a through pipe in BR days. I might be wrong and I am not at home to check my files. Mike Wiltshire
RMweb Gold 81C Posted March 23, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 23, 2019 John AA15,20 and 21 had batches fitted as per the bible you will need a photo or some one with a list of them, Miss Prism is normally good on Toads.

GWR8700
I've been following this layout for some time now but I've just seen the video of it in BRM and it's incredible, even more realistic on video than in the photos which already look brilliant. I look forward to seeing more of phase 2.
RMweb Premium Dragonboy Posted March 24, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 24, 2019 Long time admiring lurker on here John but loved the coverage of your exquisite layout in the latest BRM and if such a thing is possible, Andy’s pictures just keep on getting better and better. RMweb Gold checkrail Posted March 24, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 24, 2019 Nice to hear from new visitors to my layout thread and ‘long time lurkers’, following the article in April’s BRM. Welcome, and thanks for kind comments. As you can imagine I’m delighted with the coverage. Andy has, as ever, done a fabulous job, both with the magazine photos and the video. I love the views of the trains running along to the musical accompaniment! So big thanks to Andy and Howard. I’ve just purchased access to the digital edition, of which I was until now only vaguely aware. I see it has a couple of extra pics, plus access to the video. I was wondering how to share the DVD with family and friends. This gave me the answer – I’ll tell them to buy the digital edition instead of waiting for the paper copy on the 28th! Nice too that my article was printed in its entirety. Indeed, I was asked at a fairly late stage for a bit more detail on various aspects. (Unfortunately one or two grammatical infelicities have crept into the text during the editing process. All I can say is, “It wasn’t me Guv!”) The photos have reminded me that I really should summon up my courage and get on with weathering the locos. How timely then that Michael Russell's article on that very subject should follow mine in this edition. I'm sure it will repay careful reading. RMweb Gold The Fatadder Posted March 24, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 24, 2019 Was it in this thread or in its own thread that you posted your guide to improving Dapol square post signals? My piece on modifying the signals was in 2016, under the "Permanent way, signalling etc." section. But if you put "Improving Dapol signals" in the RMweb search box you'll find it. Cheers, John. 1 1
RMweb Gold Popular Post checkrail Posted March 26, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 26, 2019 Here we are again, up the junction, with a sequence showing a busy few minutes at Stoke Courtenay. It all starts off with 4574 arriving with the branch passenger train, bringing with it the daily return through coach to Paddington. As it glides into the platform it passes 8709 waiting in the loop with a pick-up goods, while 5000 Launceston Castle hurries through on the down main with an express. As 4574 comes to halt the tail end of the express moves rapidly out of view. The last of these four is another view of Launceston Castle charging along westward. RMweb Gold Popular Post checkrail Posted March 27, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 27, 2019 Castle meets castle as the down express enters the cutting and passes 5041 Tiverton Castle on an up service, slowing for a scheduled stop at Stoke Courtenay to retrieve the Paddington-bound through coach. 5041 comes to rest in the platform and is temporarily uncoupled from its train. It then eases forward to clear the pointwork at the station throat before setting back into the branch platform , passing the recently arrived 4574 which is lurking out of the way by the water tower. RMweb Gold Popular Post checkrail Posted March 27, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 27, 2019 The through coach is backed onto the train, coupled up, and then off they go to Paddington. John C.
RMweb Gold Limpley Stoker Posted March 27, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 27, 2019 I loved the BRM piece; the digital extra scenes and video are the icing on the cake. Mr.Philo would have been very jealous!
RMweb Gold Popular Post checkrail Posted March 27, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 27, 2019 The Paddington train heads towards the tunnel and leaves the scene, and while both main lines are clear the pick-up goods is able to creep out through the down end pointwork on to the main line. I still remember that Feb 1959 issue of RM (my first copy) coming through the letterbox, and the 11 year old me seeing that layout and thinking, "Wow! I want a layout like that when I'm grown up". Took me a while didn't it? And I never did get access to that amount of space. John C. 9 1
RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted March 27, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 27, 2019 I'm really enjoying the recent batches of pictures showing operating sequences. It's good to see how the layout works, as well as individual scenes. 7
RMweb Gold 88C Posted March 27, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 27, 2019 I have finally got round to watching the DVD and thoroughly enjoyed it. The mix of coach types in the rakes certainly helps add to the atmosphere which you have created and I agree with your philosophy of not crowding the layout. Well done and modest with it, I look forward to further updates. Brian 1
RMweb Gold Popular Post checkrail Posted March 27, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 27, 2019 The action's not over. After the goods train's cleared the section Winslow Hall arrives with a Newton Abbot to Plymouth stopper, conveying a horse box to be detached at Stoke C. for onward transmission to Earlsbridge. The horsebox is uncoupled and then brought forward and deftly set back into the short parcels and perishables bay. John C. 21
RMweb Gold Popular Post checkrail Posted March 27, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 27, 2019 Finally, in this short operating sequence, 4574 can run round its train and then cross over the main lines to retrieve the horse box, back it onto the B set, couple up and head down the branch to Earlsbridge. I'm glad some of you enjoy these action sequences. I don't actually operate to timetable, but a few series of operating moves like this can easily fill an hour or so, especially when interspersed with passing main line trains. If you add in the shunting of the branch and pick-up goods trains, the odd cattle train (now I have the wagons!) and the reverse moves of the tail traffic and through coaches it can add up to a lot of enjoyable operation. Hours of harmless fun! John C. 27
bgman
Not only hours of harmless fun John but very enjoyable from a distant admirer of your layout and work, please keep it up !
