Thanks mdvle, I hadn't seen the other items on the website.

I used to follow the Texas & Pacific (as well as C&NW, SP and various others) and that Roundhouse flat car with boat - I'm sure that both the T&P and C&NW versions were knocking around on ebay for years afterwards! Surprising to me that they're back due to popular demand but ho hum.

Cheers,

John.

Note that these are a different prototype to previously released models of the 86' autopart boxcars.

Walthers' is a Pullman Standard car. Athearn's 4 door is pretty accurate for a Thrall built car. The Athearn 2 door is a mix of Thrall and Greenville. Mind you, the Tangent model will make the others look a bit lacking...

Hi,

Has anyone any views on the latest version of the Bachmann SD70 and ES44 models.  The ones namely that are carrying the NS Heritage liveries.  I appreciate that they are not Genesis/Broadway/Scale Trains, but the sound fitted ones can be had for a reasonable price in liveries that are quite rare in other manufacturers stated.

I see that some of the detail is moulded, such as the fans on the roof and some of the grab irons, but I think they, from the pictures, look like a reasonable model.  Any views or pictures of what people may have would be useful.  It can be quite hard to tell from the typical Bachmann stock pictures. Is it true that Bachmann USA are not as good for the quality as those we see in Europe.

Cheers

Thanks for that. Have found this guy (your second video) excellent for reviews and it shows that the SD70 doesn't have working ditch light and quite a bit of the detail is moulded - the grab rails are really stand out for me and markedly different to the more upmarket units.  But I have seen these for around £115 before postage and import, so can see why they are selling - not at the $299 RRP though.  Quite a few paint blemishes as well. But they do look ok at the price point I've seen them at - maybe in a consist.

it would seem that there was a uplift in quality from the first run in the video I've been watching below (namely the ditch lights...)

Cheers

I would take them as the Bachmann equivalent of Hornby Railroad in US market - the reviewer makes it quite clear that these are exactly that and play that role very well with acceptable levels of decoration appropriate to the price point.  I think the livery can play an impact in how good the locomotive looks - take a look at a GP40 and compare the Santa Fe and Union Pacific versions - the Santa Fe looks very plasticky but in UP it looks acceptable.

If considering a dabble in HO these look a suitable introduction.

Ouch, $600 for a DDA40X. Looks rather smart though. Big uplift since the SD90MAC in Gensis 2.0.

Hopefully borders will allow travel to avoid customs when released...

One advantage of the new G2.0 DDA40X compared to the previous run is they now only need 1 sound DCC decoder instead of 2 - thus anyone thinking of picking up an older unit on the second hand market who is interested in sound may want to take that into consideration.

Correction from September 1st Athearn Train Tuesday.

DCC requires 2 decoders but you can get away with only 1 being sound (Tsunami has a dual engine decoder).

So your possibilities are:

2 non-sound  |  2 sound  |  1 sound and 1 non-sound

Haven't seen this mentioned yet but PWRS through their NARC manufacturer label have announced a set of SD70Acu locos in both HO and N. These will be available in each of the the 5 CP military honour schemes, 2 in the tuscan heritage scheme, and 2 in CP beaver/red. Prices still TBA.

Because they haven't announced them - they are playing games.

They are saying NARC isn't making them, but someone else probably/maybe/possibly is, and so they are willing to take orders for a non-existent product.

Does not reflect well on PWRS.

That's a bit naughty. But they'll likely have there customer base who would use what they're doing.

I hope Athearn get on the case before Walthers/Bachmann, given they have been keen on NS heritage units. Especially now MTH may not be on the scene.

Is there any real difference to the new ACu that warrants a significant tooling change.

The name (SD70ACU) is misleading as they aren't originally SD70*s - they are rebuilt SD90's.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_SD70ACU

Thus Walthers/Bachmann would need to tool up from new.

Athearn does have the SD90 platform now (as does Kato but they are unlikely) but the rebuilds do require new tooling - new cabs at the very least and there is likely other visual changes as well.

The danger is that they get an exclusive license from CP (like PWRS/NARC did with the Saskatchewan scheme years ago) thus screwing over modellers who don't want to deal with PWRS and perhaps making whoever they are talking about reluctant to spend the money on the tooling changes given the inability to take advantage of the tooling changes fully.
