they require raised platforms with folding back ramps to allow frieght to pass at night so would be interesting as to how to make them work. Would certainly be a talking point at Freemo meets.

And you’d need to build two or more commuter modules, ;) Go on you know you need to! Servos driving the ramp mechanisim with a magnet on the train activating a reed switch to deploy the ramps as the unit arrives . . .

I'm pretty sure on the real thing the ramps are folded away at night to allow the freight turn to run to Escondido - this is done remotely from the dispatcher. I guess for modular ops , this could be done when a freight turn runs along the line - perhaps have it set up as a self-contained branch with passenger trains , then stable them and fold the ramps away for the booked freight  job?

Escondido's frieght area itself would probably make a model in it's own right , there's a couple of industries there and I think a lumber merchant along the line and one of the intermediate stations had a spur with a boxcar at a warehouse behind the platforms.

I've travelled the entire line visiting several of the breweries along there , hence the memories of my "modelling survey" are somewhat vague.....

But would you bet on them always remembering to fold them away as their train approaches? ;)
I think I’d go for deploy as the train approaches! :D

Google Translate is so-so, but it will have traction tires and the type of coupler isn't clear - though perhaps unlikely that Piko would tool up a North American coupler - but even if the model comes with European coupler it could be an easy fix given the scarcity of small North American switchers available.

Piko USA just did a presentation at TrainWorld's virtual train show - the Whitcomb will be available from the US with US couplers and front end.

‘Niche’ in terms of numbers - only 10 of them. But (IMO) nice looking units , and quite a few owners, so could sell well.

I have pre-ordered two of these as I have always wanted a pair.  These should set up my 70's era upper-midwestern branchline layout for power for the foreseeable.

Moloco announces an ACF 50' waffle boxcar, eta later this year

Quote

** NEW ACF INDUSTRIES
50' Hi-cube Waffle Boxcars
------------------------------------------------------------

** Now taking Reservations!
for the start of our ACF programme
------------------------------------------------------------

PLEASE NOTE: This is a RESERVATION product ONLY. Please do not add current in stock items to your RESERVATION product order, any additional cars will not be held as part of this reservation. We are expecting a delivery window some time in the late 3rd Q of 2021 and the general price will be in line with current RTR prices. We'll keep you up to date with a more specific date later on. When the product becomes available to purchase we will send out invoices for your payments in the order we received them. So, the earlier you place your reservation the earlier you will be notified. We are trying to be better at producing the correct quantities of cars that our customers want.

The RESERVATIONS close on the 20th of March 2021. Reservations received by the deadline will guarantee the models ordered but also help us to determine accurate quantities per item to our factory. You can also place your reservations with any of our current dealers. Remember, no deposit is required up front to pre-order any of these cars, but you need to check-out like placing a standard order. At which time your pre-order will be registered.

Note: We have a ANY CAR NUMBER selection, this means if you do not care which car number you receive so we'll allocate one at random and it will help us balance our production quantities.

ACF 50' Waffle Double Plug door boxcars 1973-1974

ACF Industries (ACF) started producing this general type of 70t Hi-cube exterior post boxcar in 1971. The design developed further in 1973 to1974 which is the subject of this car. Especially this version with uneven sized waffles to house Lading Band Anchors. We believe this ACF car design was tailored to one customer Weyerhaeuser for paperboard loading at several plant locations in their nationwide network (including Canada). Paperboard is the raw material used in the making of cardboard boxes. The Hi-cube height was important to accommodate various sizes of "paper rolls" with either one-high, two-high or three-high depending on internal or external customer requests. The Plate clearance for these cars pre-dates the Plate F introduction so they were marked with Exceeds Plate C. Even with it's height these cars travelled throughout the US and Canada and usually ganged together into small blocks of cars. So, it was common to see all railroad schemes in one string together.

The pooled railroads with this general car design were with waffles; BN(ex-SLSF), BNSF, C&EI, MP, MRL, SLSF and TO&E. Without waffles; ATSF, BN and BNSF (100t versions). These waffle cars lasted a long time and there are reports they are still running around to this day, although with some modification.
