As an old analogue dinosaur, is it possible to get a plain DCC ready version of the B36-7's?  I have no interest whatsoever in DCC and or sound!

For this second run no - because these were done as a "the factory has spare time and needs something to do" project the number of units made is low and they only did DCC/Sound (as that dominates sales in North America).

Basically they only offer the DC only option on the standard pre-order announcement/releases.

You may be able to find a DC only version from the first run if that had any paint scheme that interested you.

Interesting.  I note they said they scanned the preserved SP one but an SP one is not in the initial line up.

The various manufactures have commented on this.

Generically speaking, some of the decision making involves these (and other) issues/concerns:

  • to they have suitable tooling (more of an issue for Athearn Genesis/ST Rivet Counter/Rapido)
  • are they offering any other products in that paint scheme that would compete for hobby $ (offering 2 different NYC locos for the 1950s at the same time means 1 or both won't sell well - there is only so much $ available)
  • in conversations with other manufacturers, do they have a competing product coming up
  • sometime a paint scheme may get chosen because it complements something - for example rolling stock to go with a loco(*) which leads to extra sales for both items
  • how much they want to take on in any given run (Rapido have said the SW1200 and its many, many paint schemes all at once was a mistake from a design time perspective and factory time perspective)
  • anything else that they don't comment on.

Rapido are well aware of the SP market - they have sold a lot of SP models in recent years and Jordan is a SP fan.  Thus it is a reasonable guess that SP will appear at some point even if for whatever reason it didn't make this run.

* - arguably one of the issues the Rapido steam program is facing is a lack of accurate rolling stock - both freight and passenger - for the steam locos to run with, an unfortunate side effect of the Canadian railroads of that era running a lot of unique to Canada stuff.

Rails have these on their website for preorder.

I now must find a suitable loco for these. IIRC Athearn did the F59PH some years ago.

Your not the only one to have seen that - there is another thread here about someone returning to Southern California modeling.

Athearn did the F59PHI, not the F59PH (and your options are the F59PHI / P42 / F40PH /possibly the Dash-8 though that would require research) - and they have said in their online live events that another run of the F59PHI will be announced soon - it is possible/likely that they will also have upgraded the model when they announce a new run much like they did with the P42 last year.

Sorry a slip of the keyboard, should have added the I. Will be good if they do but happy to upgrade an older one if not.
