RMweb Premium Andy Kirkham Posted July 13, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 13, 2016 I don't suppose anyone has any information that could help put a date on these pictures of hydraulics, and where needed identify the working. They are all on the same film and at least some of them will probably have been taken during the Autumn half term holiday of 1973, which I suppose would place them in October. They are presented here in chronological order. 7028 about to back onto its train at Temple Meads Goods Depot. Autumn 1973? by Andy Kirkham, on Flickr BT02. 7028 at Temple Meads Goods Depot. Autumn 1973? by Andy Kirkham, on Flickr 7028 is showing headcode 4B05 at its western end, which suggests that it had arrived on the 05:15 parcels from Paddington, which would have arrived at Temple Meads at 09:31 that morning. I can't find a reference to 8V35, the headcode at the other end. I'm not sure if my memory is reliable here, but think it was quite unusual for locos other than shunters to descend the incline leading into the goods depot. BT05. 7029 arrives at Westbury. Autumn 1973? by Andy Kirkham, on Flickr BT07. 7029 on the Frome Avoiding Line at Blatchbridge Junction. Autumn 1973? by Andy Kirkham, on Flickr I got these pictures of 7029 while travelling on a Bristol-Weymouth service which dwelt at Westbury for 17 minutes. I then caught 7029 again as a light engine as we passed it a Blatchbridge Junction. The headcode 7C23 seems unhelpful. By the way, does anyone know the purpose of that pair of horizontal mouldings behind the cab door at one end of a Hymek? 1000 Western Enterprise accelerates through Lawrence Hill with the 08:15 Oxford-Tytherington stone empties. Autumn 1973? by Andy Kirkham, on Flickr D1000 on the 0815 Oxford-Tytherington BT24. D1034 Western Dragoon at Temple Meads. Autumn 1973? by Andy Kirkham, on Flickr D1034 Western Dragoon at Temple Meads. Autumn 1973? by Andy Kirkham, on Flickr D1034 displaying 5B56 at Temple Meads. I couldn't find a reference to that headcode. The massive accumulation of mailbags, the low sun and the rather wintry quality of the light makes me wonder if this could be in the pre-Christmas period. There used to be a fellow who frequented Flickr under the name "PhishplatePhan" who seemed to have an almost supernatural knowledge of engine workings in those days. I have tried to contact him but he doesn't seem to be active any more.
RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted July 13, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 13, 2016 Hi Andy I cannot help with the dates but the photo of 7029 shows how badly manufacturers and modellers get the lights on diesels pre-1980s. It is a foggy day and the driver has the white light on. It is glowing yellowy-orange not bright white. There is no indication that there is any lighting on behind the headcode blinds or if there is it is so dull as not to illuminate the headcode. The light on the driver's side is a red one hence it is not on. Nice set of photos.

On the Hymeks,Westerns,Warships and Class 14 the marker light on the Drivers side is white and the second mans side is red they were only fitted with one tail lamp and one white marker light. Rugd1022
Lovely pics as always Andy... the two horizontal panels on the Hymeks aren't quite panels as such, they're vents for the batteries which are just behind them, the bottom edge is 'open' on these. mark alden
8V35 was the 05.40 Willesden Sudbury Sidings to Acton trip freight and was part of a trip freight duty covering Acton, Hayes, Willesden Brent starting at 03.50 and finishing at 14.00. The return working off 4B05 was 6A27, starting at Bristol Temple Meads Goods where the picture is taken, and left around 14.00. I used to live in Ruislip but got freed (sorry, divorced)... I'm still about ;-)...
