Thankyou Ian,

Yes, a mystery for the spotters!

I quite fancy doing a 24 with a 25 cab at one end (it would save some work to boot!) But I can't find any evidence of any ScR locos so fitted in my 1970-72 time frame unfortunately; I am very happy to be proved wrong however and research is ongoing! Most such conversions seem to have been carried out after this time it appears though.

A few 24/1 and 25/0s had the same treatment too, sometimes with the winged headcode boxes but no horn enclosures.

Cheers,

Martyn.

H Martyn,

Looking at my notes I found that the oddball 24/0's had 24/1 & 25/0 style head code boxes and the oddball 24/1 & 25/0's had 25/1 style head code boxes with the faired sides, some with horns and others without. There are probably more and the changes will need to be researched as to when the alternate head code boxes were actually fitted.

The oddities are as follows:

  • 24 049, 24/1 at 2 end.
  • 24 055, 24/1 at 1 end.
  • 24 133, 25 faired at 2 end.
  • 24 135, 25 faired at 2 end later 25 horns 1 end.
  • 24 142, 25 horns 1 end.
  • 24 144, 25 faired 1 end.
  • 24 147, 25 faired 2 end.
  • 24 148, 25 faired both ends.
  • 25 006, 25 horns 2 end.
  • 25 008, 25 horns 1 end.
  • 25 009, 25 faired 1 end.
  • 25 010, 25 horns 1 end.
  • 25 015, 25 horns 2 end.

Hi Gibbo,

Thanks for the very useful list, I will compare notes with the Derby Sulzers site to see how the allocations and (hopefully) conversion dates fit with my era.

Cheers,

Martyn.

Thanks, yes an interesting loco - no.1 end was done in March 1967 with the no.2 end by 1974 it appears. By 1973 it had a mix of both numbering styles applied on different cabs and became one of the locos still carrying green livery with TOPS numbering in 1974.

Slowly, slowly and all that. Rat no.3 is shaping up with small and fiddly jobs being done as and when time allows, with several more yet to do.

Roof grilles and headcode discs should be on their way from Shawplan so, once fitted, this and rat no.2 (the 25/2) should be able to receive their green paintwork; this one will become 5090 in shabby Eastfield c.1972 green FYE livery.

This loco had an interesting history, having survived running into the back of an EMU at Rugeley in 1967. Repaired and released from Derby works that October, unusually still in green livery, which it retained after TOPS renumbering as 24090 and carried until stored in 1975, withdrawal following in 1976.

Martyn,

You're getting good at this. When's the Production Line coming on stream?

I know you have referenced derbysulzers already but in case anyone wasn't aware, there are a couple of sections on cl.24 &25 cabs inc. headcode boxes:

https://www.derbysulzers.com/cabs.html

https://www.derbysulzers.com/changes.html#Cab Design

Indeed, the section on battery box / fuel tank / water tank differences is very useful too.

Thanks,

Martyn

The last jobs on the 24 before spraying were mainly around the cabs, namely the prominent curved rainstrip around the roof edge, headcode disc marker lights and cabside window vertical dividers.

Plus the small aperture (boiler safety valve?) at cantrail level and edging around the water filler cutouts.

Followed by a blow over with grey primer and black for the chassis sides/underframe area, seen drying in the sun this afternoon.

The etched parts (fan grille, headcode discs, handrails and cab roof vents) will be sprayed with etch primer and topcoat, prior to fitting them once the main colours have been applied.

After mentioning it elsewhere, I am modifying my Bachmann Cravens class 105 DMU to one from the original Scottish batch, which had a different Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) Brake Van layout to the Bachmann model with one less window and the double doors nearer the van end, so some old fashioned cut & shuttery was called for! As the bodyshell is to the same profile as a Mk.1 coach, spare Triang bits have replaced the superfluous window space. I had recently resprayed the DMBS blue before realising my mistake!

20210324_193613.jpg.56def970a6279c6d122abc6937c9199b.jpg

On the drivers side, the double van doors are arranged with the Guards door to the right, which is a pain as the Bachmann model has it on the left. As an aside, as the Railcar website points out with photographic evidence, the BR diagram drawings are incorrect in this respect for this version (batch 4&5).

My original (long shot) plan was to heat a spare set of doors, of the correct orientation, from a Lima 117, using boiling water, and bend this to the correct profile, in order not to have to fill and drill windows and replace all the door furniture.

But no.

Don't try this at home kids, it doesn't work! The part deformed sideways from a rectangle to a parallelogram! So in the bin it went!

20210324_193703.jpg.df4fea9932704cf02c7b356c82955af5.jpg

So having cut out the area to be altered, I filled in the left window of the Bachmann part with plasticard and drilled a new window in the right hand door, and sanded off all the handrail and hinge detail etc. Otherwise both sides followed the same process of cut out, cut again, remove waste, splice Triang bits, and refit. The bits with remnants of grey are the Triang parts.

And after:

The original double footsteps (to be replaced) show up the difference in door position. Next up, some filler and then sanding.

The DTCL will stay green FYE for the late 60s hybrid look, but needs the underframe reworking as I also discovered these units were not "Power twins"......

Still, it will give me a couple of spare Bachmann engines to reuse.

The things we do, eh?

Martyn

Did the Scottish 105's have this difference when built? I have just purchased a Green with speed whiskers and a green with syp for my layout

The pop up stupid "help our advertiser" ads every time I visit this site are really annoying. No wonder FB groups are taking over. Just saying.

:offtopic:  But then again, as far as we know, RMWeb doesn't sell your data?

As far as I recall yes, those of batches 1 & 4 had the arrangement I modelled to suit my needs, batch 4 power & trailer being the type which went to Scotland. Bachmann modelled the batch 2 & 3 style of power twin units. The differences are summarized here:

Oh FB is not without its faults, don't get me wrong, but most of the specific sites are well moderated and idiots are quickly banished. I find it easier to use and more intuitive though, without annoying ads popping up, and such groups as I participate in seem generally very popular and supportive and seem to be growing all the time, which makes me wonder long term how FB will affect RMweb and similar websites? Hopefully it won't.

I don't know what pop-up adds you're referring to, so it may be your security settings need adjustment.

There internal ads popping up upon opening RMWeb for the past couple of days.   They seem to have gone away today.

They have only happened on here for the past couple of days (I use the phone app), security is ok, but as AlphaZagato says it hasn't happened today so perhaps it was a short term thing?

Thanks Martyn , I'll need to do some closer comparing as the ones I have (31-326/327) seem to match the ones you have created , I'm modelling the ones working out of 61A in the late 50's/early 60's

If unsure the same site I linked also has the allocations history and hundreds of photos in date order. I wasn't aware Bachmann had done both body styles (the one I picked up had some damage so was at a price I couldn't refuse!).

Cheers,

Martyn.

Cheers Martyn , mine are the non power twin version so I think they are correct but I'll double check
