That's a fine job Shaun. 

 

I'm afraid under the same circumstances I'd have thought I was beaten and would have had to concede and start again from scratch. Very well played, and a great set of pictures and description to help others who might like me now attempt something they thought was a bridge too far before.

Hi Chris. I reverted back to code 100 on Bradford having purchased a nice big bundle of new old stock Peco and a bargain bundle of the Shinohara stuff. Not all of them are electrofrog.  That's the reason for the surgery, Live frog conversion! I did neglect to point out in my post the bit about chiseling off the plastic frog. The post has been edited to make that clearer.

The curving can be tricky to get the blades to do their thing, it took a bit of playing around to work out that the section of sleepers with the spring mount has to be left without any cuts and is free as a unit to slide on the rails to where it sits perfect.

 

If only those diamond crossings could be bent. I'm still not happy with the ones on Queensbury and was laying in bed last night thinking I should have a go at scratch building one by drawing it out on a thin piece of plastic card and building it up on there one section at a time. I thought about taking the copper-clad sleeper route but am crap with the soldering iron. Mrs. S. thinks I should take a class! I feel a road trip coming on!!

Hi John.

It's worth having a practice run on an old turnout first. I found the confidence gained easily led to much grander ideas. In the end I tried bending diamond crossings which proved to be a Rhine Bridge even when I took out both ends at once!!

About time this thread got updated.

 

Here's the deal at present. When test running trains about two weeks ago I realized the wiring on Queensbury wasn't completed.

I dismantled two thirds of it and have hooked up all the missing feeds from one section to another. The up line now works having located a couple of gremlins.

The down line however, has a short somewhere which I can't  fathom for the life of me. Having taken it apart twice now and got Mrs. Squatch to help by drilling holes and holding one prob of the tester on the rails while I crawled about poking at connections underside. This  just confused the matter even more.  All I can tell is that there is a yellow wire to blame because the problem only  arises when the yellow feed is connected from the other board.

 

Fingers crossed as far as Exchange is concerned because It is ready to run!

 

While I had Queensbury apart (the first time) I did make a start on the scenery. Some old brass rail which has card sleepers has had every other sleeper removed and been glued down and ballasted in the rope worked incline.

The warehouse is in a bit of a tissy , tools everywhere, chunks of layout upended, bits of wire all over the place. You get the picture, it's a Shangri-la  for Gremlins!

Well I wasn't too far wrong It was a brown to a frog which should have been on a common and not the yellows! Solved!! Trains now run throughout the double triangle.

The test run proved interesting and was quite an involved maneuver  with two tank engines running side by side. More on that later as I get used to the operation.

 

  Exchange didn't work. I found more gremlins!

I found two of these which took hours to locate.

The test train ran onto the loops behind Bradford and ground to a halt. A quick poke with the tester showed a short across the rails. I checked all the usual culprits like frogs and crossed wires. Eventually I had the board upended. After about an hour I disconnected  the new feed wire that I added after removing that 3way turnout. This isolated the gremlins to the passing loops. Sometimes a short showed up, sometimes not and even more baffling was a resistance across the rails.

The problem proved to be the two over center springs on the SEEP motors which somehow managed to short out the whole layout. They have been snipped off and shipped back to the darkest corner of the jungle in SE Asia from whence they came.

The replacement Peco turnouts have their own springs so no loss.

What a long evening that was.

It has been a busy week and I'm now back to the layout.

 

After finding yet another couple of gremlins and fixing a massive blunder on my part I'm delighted to announce that it actually all works! Up to 12 trains can be held on the sidings behind Goathland to run in and out of Bradford Exchange. Now that I have completed the wiring on the Queensbury section up to 12 trains can also be held on the hidden loops there to run onto Goathland. This high number of trains will be reduced when I have completed the layout because an up and down line through each will be left open for through running!

 

A nice parcel of yet more track-work arrived over the weekend which will now enable construction of the section of 4 track line that will run along the North end of the warehouse. When the weather cools down I'll get in the woodwork shop and get that done. There's a couple of rough track sections left to iron out and I replaced some code 100 on one end of Queensbury  with code 75. Now the ballasting can commence!

 

So a train.

A local comprising an N7 and a Kirk twin 3rd prepares to leave platform 2 bound for Halifax. When finished the train will be under the arched roof!

Once the points are set it changes controllers and heads into Queensbury tunnel at some speed, those N7s did have exceedingly good acceleration.

Totally agree with that mate!  I have tried to squeeze in as many passing loops with isolated sections as reasonably possible.

Today i had a tidy up and got some trains out for a bit of a running session.

 

Starting with Bradford exchange then we have an N2 with some Thompson stock in platform 1 ready to depart on a Queensbury Halifax local all stations.

I have temporarily  placed the textile mill where the Victoria hotel will go to create a bit of a back drop.

Common to Bradford Exchange is a Fiarburn tank, seen here in platform 4 with a Manchester train.

Moving on to Queensbury now we see non condensing N2 with the Halifax portion of the Yorkshire Pullman. Note I know it's in the wrong platform road but in my garage things are not as they should be!

The perspective is weird here, same train in the same position but the other passenger train is just hiding on the curve behind the station building and Goathland can be glimpsed in the very far distance!

A trio of pics I left out last time here.

 

This one shows to good effect how the low relief HO scale farm house adds a fair bit of depth. The station masters is OO scale and in hindsight this might have been better modeled in HO too.

This goods shed has been placed where the L&Y warehouse will go to add some interest until I get the proper building made.

This week I have been tackling that viaduct.

First I trimmed the two arches to fit before marking the wood supports and wrapping them with the piers.

Then I cut three wedge shaped sections to fit and marked the arches on.

I cut the arches roughly on my band saw and sanded them down to the pencil marks on the roller end of the bench sander, them hot glued the sections in place.

The dry run seems to marry up nicely.

I have scribed the stones onto the platform side of the top. Yes there were two wooden platforms across the top!  Also a row of capping stones from card have been glued on.

Flockage is usually Mrs. S's job!    Question is how do I separate  SWMBO from SOFA?  Perhaps I should take her out...Shopping....

            ...for hairspray, scouring pads, rattle can glue, sisal string, and rubberized horsehair!

Spent a relaxing evening out in the garage working on the viaduct. Not happy with the over green effect, I set about painting all the quoins and arch stones and then blended in all the weathering. Hot glue was used to stick the sides on and I still need to blend the joins with the piers with a band of stones and more paint.
