Yes I regularly check it out. Some useful pics on there sometimes.

Found plenty of time to work on the base boards today. The first main frame is all cut and assembled. It still needs the wing framing done but so far so good.

The Queensbury end.

915510140_Stationboard(1).JPG.639cce57d89cd4548601fe5c54eb9f05.JPG

The goods yard end showing the down grade through the hidden sidings on far left. Those ply frames are 10 inches deep, needed for such a large board.

So the first Idea which occurred to me was that with the hidden sidings the Bradford section could be operated as a self contained layout. Which... makes it exhibitable. Only problem is, it's a bit too wide for my truck. Hmmmmm.

More wood work tomorrow after I've done a run to the timber merchants.

Regards Shaun

Ask away Shaun. I worked as a Guard at Leeds 6/88 - 10/91.  Always been interested in the GNR in West Yorks.

I was Area M&E Engineer at Holbeck from 1985 - 1989. I might have been on one of your trains!

Been really enjoying the woodwork on this, tis' my idea of fun.

I came up with this idea of an interlocking joint. It isn't hard to do with a cross cut saw and will add sturdiness to the rather large construction.

There are two main frames of 10½"

The cross members are ripped at 8", pass into the 3" cutout and twist into place.

A glue block is then fixed to hold it.

1406518573_BradfordexchangeOOlayoutconstruction(1).JPG.a49d93535ffbcb51bf8fc4651f4377ef.JPG

After all the cutting  out and a quick sand, the parts were given a dry run before assembly upsidedown with glue blocks and pneumatic 1" staples.

When dry I married the two halves up on the workbench and clamped them together.

Workshop needs a clean...

Any discrepancies  where sorted using the Jack plane.

Note The square stick on top....

1302330779_BradfordexchangeOOlayoutconstruction(6).JPG.cafdd7280b15594f55b7e099b3aa9b28.JPG

...two of these are placed squarely on top of each end of the layout.

Squatting down and using an eye (still the sharpest tool in the tool box:wink_mini:) we can see the work bench is out. There's torsion!     To remove it shimming is required to level things out!

2039180734_BradfordexchangeOOlayoutconstruction(7).JPG.e2d2742cfb8e7587b521d5123bee2909.JPG

I had to shim the join too (seen here under the join). The yard board is  ¾" higher and to maintain a level base I clamped the level diagonally across the join and shimmed the assembly both sides to bring it up level. All was double checked.

8 x  ¼" holes have been drilled to accept coach bolts, banged in with t' hammer and fixed tight with washers and wing nuts.

About time  I done a step-by-step. Shaun.

My brother is in Banff national park Canada right now. He called me and asked if I could meet him in Vancouver the day before he flies back to the UK.  1200 mile round trip just to make sure he gets his keister on the right plane. I DON'T THINK SO.

When my son was here 5 years ago someone wrote the wrong departure date on our calendar, I found out when my mum rang up from Heathrow worried sick that he wasn't on the plane. "what are you on about mum, he;s still in bed". didn't go down well!

In the end we got him on a plane from San Francisco and had to haul arse to get him there, Then I got stuck in the bay area rush hour and turned tail and drove all the way home.  Over 1200 miles in 17 hours.  Thrashing my previous record of 600 miles from Oban to Brighton in 12. If anyone thinks that's slow, it was on a 200cc vespa. Those were the days!

Unfortunately nothing got done on Sunday. I spent too long mushroom hunting and then the mower broke down.

Today I managed to get the whole afternoon in the wood shop.

20 wing supports, each one different all cut  ¼" short with the angles measured and cut where needed.

1835341233_wingsupports(1).JPG.26c2a41200b7c537213c8b876a3fd439.JPG

This should give the gist of things.

200557345_wingsupports(2).JPG.fd835b5f29c0030da7fb8253b430697c.JPG

I will make skirts when they are fixed and still need to dismantle the two halves to cut some more spaces in the main frames between those wings.

Hi Shaun, lovely bit of woodwork, when you have finished the skirts can you make Mrs W Station a dress. All the best Adrian.

:lol::lol::lol:

I will have to cut pleats in those skirts....   Is Mrs. W Station a 50s kind of gal? could do the dress while the machines are set up!:drag:

There's nothing like a good bit of banter (or a good polka) to keep you on your toes!

Oh Knickers! Someone would have spotted that...

...It was a bit confusing. 6 of them are built into the frames and the smallest ones must be cut to fit after the skirts go on!

I'm going to pull the flywheel on the mower today and hopefully  I wont have to strip it down. It's unseasonably  cold here.

Regards!

I'm glad you know what you're doing.

I have absolutely no idea what is going to happen next!

:read: Really...

Well I'm going to have to break it in two, strip it down and lay it on it's back. It needs some more holes bored  out before I fit it with wings, make pleated skirts and put those on before I add the legs which will be up in the air on account of it being on it's back.

Hope that put you back in the picture Bogie.

Watching yet another "B***" awful episode of "Tame of Ghrones" series, with her Mum.  They are competing to see who can view the complete set first.  Is it any wonder I take to the laptop and another glass of the red stuff?

Hey we watched that Game of Thrones. Makes Sasquatches old school humor look very tame. I didn't know where to put my face!

Hopefully when I've done all the chores I'll get the baseboards finished and find time to do the other half of the construction step by step.

From what I've read in, properly informed, history books, a few of the Barons of our past were not beyond the sort of behaviour illustrated in the series.  It is rather laid on with a trowel in the series, but perhaps an education for some of the younger generation, assuming they can make the connection with a form of the reality.  You are definitely going to have to raise you game on the humour front to compete on that level.  Personally, I'm quite happy with your current subtlety and gentle fun.

Chores??  Has Mrs S lost her previous understanding of the priorities of life?  Perhaps less of the viewing of GoT for her, might bring back her more mellow side.

Regards and good luck with the viewing figures.

The gradients were made by leaving the wings half inch short and clamping the track bed of said gradient to a straight edge before gluing and pinning strips of wood to the top of the wing.
