Don't speak too soon. Things have slowed down what with helping my brother-in-law and his family move on Tuesday and work yesterday, I'm kind of knackered!

Yesterday evening I did paint the green on to the windows.

post-8964-0-57163100-1415996445_thumb.jpg

Then I got to looking at my plan and realized that the rear of this building will be seen. So model it I must.

An extra gable end was cut out along with the windows to the size of some Dornaplas windows. I think the details will get scribed into the glazing. A piece of plastic strip will cover the foam end on one side of the gable and the other by the O gauge brick sheet which is going over the end wall. I'm not happy with the scribing.

£34.50!!!

Bargain!

That looks like a lot of fun and burnt fingers!

Speaking of which. My fingers are covered i plasters at the moment due to several deep scalpel cuts. I've taken the tip of my left thumb off, sliced open my left index finger and tonight opened a deep cut in the middle finer of my right hand :(

Suppose I'd better buy a new soldering iron tip or two.

Can anyone recommend a good solder and flux for fiddly etch brass?

I know it's not all the bits needed to construct a three platform bridge but it's a start and leaves the Ratio bridge I have for the other small station I have in mind.

I think you may need to be a bit more careful.

Seriously though, you have my sympathies with the amount of scars on my hands (not all modelling related)

That bridge looks great, love the photos, and the kit looks like it's going to be fun too!

I did wonder about etched brass for my footbridge, but in the end I went for styrene strip instead.

That one looks a lot more complex though.

Nice, look forward to seeing it being built.

Al.

Bad luck Lee, I've been very lucky so far, and nearly all of my near misses have been on my nails, and not soft flesh :D

Superglue is very good for scalpel wounds - both to close the wound and keep it clean :O

looking forward to seeing this .....Kal uses flux and soldering irons from Rapid....his soldering iron is temperature controlled and has a stand.....he has used tonnes over time and says cost does not always equate to quality...or only up to a point. Low cash=cheap high cash does not necessarily equal good quality, (he says he has never paid more than 70£ for a solder station) and it  needs to be controllable at 250,300,350,400 and preferably steps in between....at least for the stuff he does. He like to work at 400 cos he goes in fast and gets out quick.....so you don't  melt everything around it!!!!! And he prefers a fine point no flat edge. But others can and will have very different opinions.  and with solder he likes it with silver in and presently has 60.37.3..... 3 percent silver 60 percent tin 37 lead and with flux already in it.....

Thanks Jaz.

When I lived in Europe I built a vari temp soldering station from bakelite and a light dimmer. I gauged the settings by melting various scraps of white metal and different solders then marked the dial accordingly !

All I have these days (110 volts over here) is a dual temperature electrical iron. Great for wiring but I doubt it'll do a good job of the bridge.

Two other kits in the kit box will need soldering up as well. A GNR milk van and a 4F chassis replacement for an old Airfix loco.

Oh and I forgot to mention that I have an A8 kit to run on Goathland, that's white metal but could be assembled with super glue.

Plenty of challenging projects to keep me busy over the winter.

regards Shaun

Afternoon(here!) Shaun,

Splendid building work as always! Could you tell me who supplied the 4F chassis kit, and if it's a current version, roughly how much it cost? I've got an unused Airfix 4F which is over 35 years old and I suspect it might need a new chassis!

Hope you are missing the worst ravages of the weather that some states are experiencing at the moment!

Kind regards,

Jock.

Comet do a chassis for the 4F too (and I believe a buyer has been found for the business so their products should be available again soon). It goes together really well and if I'm not mistaken (which I admit I might be), it comes with horn blocks and the like so you can spring it.

I built one ages ago, have had it running, etc., but then took one look at the tender and promptly ordered a Comet Fowler tender kit and chassis too, which has sat in the To Do box ever since.

The Airfix loco body isn't that bad for it's age really although it's not up with the Bachmann one, obviously. The splashes are oversized on both.

We had a power cut here yesterday, some idiot managed to take out one of the poles holding up the power lines and I lost my post!

Here it is again, progress on the station masters gaff!

I have decided to model the back as it will be seen from the other side of the room.

post-8964-0-01714900-1416605335_thumb.jpg

The roof is wills slate sheets, held together with tape. This allows it to take its form over the gables before adding the ridge tiles, which when allowed to set over night will form one solid roof structure which can be removed and detailed.

post-8964-0-63418500-1416605351_thumb.jpg

The windows for the back are just scribed clear sheet. I scribed the horizontal bars on one side and the vertical on the other. When paint is rubbed in across the scribe lines it will stay there as opposed to trying to get it to stay put when wiping along the lines hence the scribing both sides.

Thanks Shaun and Jason for the 4F chassis info. The only problem with the Bachmann model is that it is of the Midland RH drive version whilst those we had at Hurlford were BR LH drive - not sure if a conversion would be easy but it might be a cheaper way out!

Typical that such an image should turn up at this stage Shaun, and it blows-up very crisply! I think your model looks superb though and the one depicted looks like quite a lot of modernisation has gone on.

Keep up the good work,

Kind regards,

Jock.

Edited because I mixed up my L & R !!

It's funny how things gel sometimes. Medford Model Railroad show this week end at which I could not commit to exhibit either of our layouts due to unpredictable weather. (the canopy has been removed from my pick up).
So today I attended as a visitor but on the way home the truck had a serious breakdown on Interstate 5 which would have left me unable to bring any layout home after the show tomorrow.
(the vacuum pump seized causing the serpentine belt to rupture leaving me with no brakes, power steering etc. at 70 mph.)

Anyway home and dry within the hour for $34, so here are a series of pictures from Campbell Scale Models of Oregon for you to enjoy. All HO scale..
The models are in glass displays and available from them as kits. here.

  • 3 weeks later...

Yesterday I showed up at the orthopedics center for a minor surgery on my hand only to be told it wasn't going to happen because there's not enough damaged tissue to operate on!

So having set 2 weeks aside for healing I now have two weeks spare for modeling! :sungum:  :sungum:

This morning I have already built  4 chimneys for the Queensbury station buildings and started on a scratch built LNER 45' bogie CCT to dia. 207.

Details have been added to the station masters house. Down pipes, barge boards, glazing and curtains which I am quite pleased with!

The real thing for comparison

Another acquisition, this time a brand new in the box J39. This was LNER 1996 and I have resprayed it and renumbered it 64257, a loco which appears in 1950s pics of Queensbury.

Four more pictures of Queensbury station I have found on Facebook of all places.

A B1 with what appears to be a gresley 61' brake comp and a Thompson non corridor of some sort. Most interesting are the express headlamps!!

That was several posts worth. Love the modelling. Hope you are happy about the hand. I can understand you would like it to be better, but have to take a big breath in case it ends up worse, sometimes coping with what you have is actually the best option. Hope you can continue modelling, and moe importantly (oh did i say that lol) running your business.

I put a mod instead of a rocker on a scooter in my Xmas layout thinking of you, I' hoping to represent Mrs Sasquatch on the Queen seat, I know you probably did not know her then, but the thought is there. If I remember you said a lovely lady with blond hair.

Regardless wishing you both a very

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Hi Jaz,

Thank you. For some unfathomable reason my hand seems to be getting better all by it's self . After I had a steroid injection for the trigger finger all the pain stopped and now I can actually lift the affected finger while laying my hand flat on the table.

The only thing holding me back with layout construction is the rather cold weather, so I'm going to crack on and finish as many of those unfinished models with all this spare time. I've not any work to speak of lined up, only on our house. It always gets quiet in my line of work at this time of year.

I'll PM you a pic of Mrs. S. for reference :girldevil:(she mightn't be too happy if I put one up on here).

I use to ride Kawasaki Z 750s too you know. Anyhow if you model me on a scooter wearing leather that would be more accurate! Those old fashioned chrome goggles too.

This picture has to be 25 years ago but only god knows where.
