Hi Shaun, great stuff, I hope that the chinese gremlins havn't left any hidden suprises for you. All the best Adrian .

Hi Adrian. There's a few problems I need to sort out like one faulty switch and a sticky point motor but so far everything I have tested seems to be good!

Regard Shaun

Squatch just might stand a chance of a medal in the soldering iron gymnastics. Only missed one connection and hasn't scalded any fingers :sungum:  :sungum:  :sungum:

I have used a train set controller to supply 20VAC for the solenoids and 9VDC for the relays. It could use more amps on the point switching circuit due to the length of some of the wires, so I'll keep looking for a better supply like the one on Goathland which has a hefty 2 amps @ 20VDC and came from our old printer!

This afternoon I hooked up the boards and tested it all. Apart from a few small problems it works. So tomorrow Queensbury will be reassembled and put to the final test. Trains!

Hi Clay.

I'll take that as a compliment my friend. You have truck loads of talent, I was sitting here in the small hours admiring your castle!

After stumbling out of the Birch Hall Inn with a belly full back last week I grabbed this picture of Pottershire post office in the light of the full moon with my new phone.

So Queensbury still hasn't been put back together. Reason: It is two inches too wide and blocks the side door. Solution: Take off door and remove casement. :sungum:  :sungum:  So yesterday afternoon was spent putting the door on so that it opens outwards! Today I need to finish the job with seals and paint, it needed a revamp anyway.

Hopefully I'll have time to reassemble the layout this afternoon and if it works I'll be happy for several reasons foremost that the hidden sidings at the back which serve Goathland can be used!

The plan then is to get the ballast down and the infrastructure made.

Two more corner boards have to be made but knowing me once I get going in the woodwork shop the boards for Bradford will be done also.

Squatch Feeling over optimistic this morning.

PS. Thank you all for all the likes, I find it very encouraging which helps keep me focused.

This mornings optimism seems to have paid off, so I'll continue with a very optimistic post this evening. :dancer:

Most of the morning was spent getting the door frame pucker :read: and rearranging half the warehouse.

This  afternoon had me crawling about on all fours like a beast, shimming  and laying on my back hooking up yet more wires. The floor in there is extremely uneven!

Results speak for themselves...

Strange to see Goathland so close to the West Riding in this long shot.

post-8964-0-28445400-1538803378.jpg

However, there are about a dozen minor problems and small fixes. not least...

Where the two layouts meet the scenery requires matching up. Oops :dontknow:

post-8964-0-30670800-1538803466.jpg

Some of the rails across the triangle joint have shrunk due to a change in temperatures.

This was planned. Having encountered this problem before, foresight prompted me to lay the track in hot weather. had I laid it on a cold day the rails would have buckled when temperatures reached the 100s next summer!

That hidden siding tunnel is far too long and dark. "I thought I could see a light at the end of the tunnel but it was just the boss with a touch bringing me more work"!!

post-8964-0-01608700-1538803421.jpg

And... my garage isn't square. This I'm OK with because if it were true I'd have to move that bloody light switch!

post-8964-0-38347200-1538803395.jpg

Here's the first train to run on Queensbury then,( albeit behind on the hidden section from Goathland). Note the baseboard joint which is about 6 feet from the train.

Lastly J50 arriving with the first ballast train. It has just emerged from Queensbury tunnel and is pictured here where the North signal box once stood. :sungum:  :sungum: :sungum:  :sungum:

G'Day Folks

Looking forward to N1's and Quad-Arts..........................tomorrow........... perhaps LOL

manna

Looking forward to N1s too mate. Right after I've remortgaged the house!

The Quad-Art set was made up of ex GNR 6 wheelers. There are some reasonably priced card body kits available, I'd just need to source some 8' Fox bogies.

Also looking into scratch building a J6.  Got to keeps my GNR fans happy!

For now though I must concentrate on layout work before the cold weather.

Today I had a major clean up, tidied and reorganized much. The first job will be to hook up another controller for Queensbury because for now the two layouts remain separate in the form of two L shape ones that cross over each other.

Regards Shaun.

The only modeling on the agenda lately has been loads for some rolling stock. Some scraps of wood have been ripped down and used along with jute coloured carpet thread, beading cord (which make a good representation of fine chain) Evergreen plastics and some Heljan HO freight kits now marketed by Knightwing I believe. It’s all painted with crafters acrylics and held together with PVA, tape and 2sec cyano.  Wagon weathering is powders. Most loads are removable/interchangeable.

Imported cedar.

This representation of an LNER diagram 25 cattle wagon is kit bashed from the Parkside version. I'd used the chassis parts for a fish van ages ago so had to source replacement parts from the scrap box.

post-8964-0-63495800-1547587379_thumb.jpg

the LMS brake van has wire hand rails and ballast box etc. I see Hornby have announced a retool of this for 2019. Typical!

post-8964-0-33455700-1547587392.jpg

Lastly I have hashed up a model of preserved 3F 47406 from a Hornby one. Amazing what you can do with a $1 can of satin black from Walmart.

post-8964-0-57041400-1547587407.jpg

The whistle is just a piece of 16gauge electrical wire with the insulation cut to shape and painted copper. A fun little project and runs very smooth.

Glad to see you got into the garage without kneeling on anything important! :)

Nice work mate, looking good.

Al.

I was lucky the whole layout didn't collapse. Top of my to-do list is getting a spare key cut

Good to hear from you Al.

Looks quite like Dunster Castle, interesting place, but I don't remember seeing the move "oop narth", in the news.

Last time we were there [Dunster] they had a mock Roundhead / Cavalier battle on offer.  Before the event a few were checking their muskets and one had a missfire, and tried to get the matchlock to work, [Yes I know most Civil War muskets were flintlock, but I suppose there must have been some older matchlocks, due to expense.] - blowing on the fuse, re-priming the pan each time, adjusting it etc   Having fiddled about with the hot end and given it every opportunity to light a smoldering ember in the barrel from the Pan flashes, he then turned it round to take a long look down the barrel!!!!  My daughter was about 6 at the time and not wishing her to experience quite such a dramatic demonstration of the energy released when gunpowder burns in a musket barrel, we left, quickly.

Regards

Hi J.

That sounds like it could have turned into a rather nasty disaster! As far as I'm aware the castle is still down in the sunny west. Being rather cold out in the warehouse I chose to take pictures in my cozy attic to avoid shivering and blurry images, Sorry for the confusion mate!

Phew!!  I'm glad Dunster Castle is still there and I hadn't missed such a huge project.  This old age thing can cause so much confusion at times, you just never know.  I even thought I fell out of bed last night and had to get out to have a look!

You will be aware that a discarded [extinguished!] match or cigarette can continue to smoulder for the best part of a week, before an appropriate draught of wind can set it into flame again.  I am very glad that wasn't something we had to witness.

Back to the layout, I approve the layout Castle move and look forward to seeing how the Queen likes the new home in Somerset.

Regards

Julian
