Hi Shaun, some really nice pictures of the snow and your progress with the buildings. I am with you on paper hat wearing:king: .

All the best to you and Mrs Squatch for the the New Year, Adrian.

Hi Adrian.

Would you believe I'm guilty of introducing the crackers containing the hats to my Mrs. S's family? They do enjoy the Boxing Day idea though!

Hope that the new year brings many happy hours modeling and happiness in general.

Thank you, Julian!

There will be improvement if it keeps snowing. There's more forecast!

Brass monkey's bad enough Steve. Severe brass monkeys must be when the nads break off! :(

Hope you're keeping warm enough. Regards Shaun.

Got on with the other main wall for the L&Y warehouse this afternoon. Quite good progress too!

Only thing which might not be apparent is the use of white brickwork. Same stuff, just snow white.:blind:

This warehouse build seems to be taking forever, believe it or not aprox.100 more bits have been added since I last posted. Mostly lintels, cornices, brick details and packing pieces.

Scraps have been used to make the doorways...

893571210_LYwarehousebuild(3).JPG.f34605847f2be1ecebc02717e8dbddd1.JPG

...and Evergreen styrene strip for all the sills and lintel detail. All the gaps have been filled with spackling, clean up was initially done with a damp cotton bud. This was left to dry overnight with a further detail clean up with a fine chisel bit in the scalpel. A little sanding was also needed here and there.

2122934283_LYwarehousebuild(1).JPG.0d1a6c49b1a75c45ca754956fa491095.JPG

These distinct rows of detail at the top of each wall panel were tricky to make. Firstly, I drilled rows of 3mm holes in a sheet of .040" plastic card on my drill press. Then I cut the strips out to fit and scraped the taper with a Stanley knife.

Lastly using the knife, the tiny scraps were removed below each hole. Not as tedious as it sounds.

If I get these finished today, I'll tackle the end wall and stay up late with the paint and brushes.

It's looking very good Shaun,  impressive work.  Looking forward to seeing such a large structure

in place on the layout,  it'll be an imposing presence.    Happy New Year,   Felix

Hi Felix

Next on my agenda will be the Great Northern Victoria Hotel that stood across the road. Infact it's still there!!!

Another 100 parts made and fitted and we're ready for some paint!

DSCF2773.JPG.15829ac5cd76048b58f76e579304afe1.JPG

The pillars had to be hacked into with a sharp craft knife, so that some heavy-duty plate girders could be hashed up from plastic card etc. and inserted.

There's some posh detail on the end too. I have paid more attention to detail here because it will be much more noticeable!...

DSCF2775.JPG.265c7a2a8d6b0b4244a6be6aae499f1c.JPG

...I think the hotel will be getting some posh stonework also. If I can get it looking half as impressive as it looks in this photo, I'll be chuffed!

Things are looking a bit different now. I did have problems with the primer though. First, I did the side with all the windows by brushing on Humbrol #1. I didn't get on with this paint at all. It was gloopy and gave me a headache.

512652355_LYwarehousepaint(1).JPG.024994d67390c36c94abd51066e4ab2b.JPG

For the end, it was a no brainer to dig out a cheap rattle can primer seeing as the windows have not been fitted.

The can was old and the nozzle failed.  For the other end I did mask up the windows and had to use a new tin of primer which was darker.

All three sections were treated with a sandy mortar wash.

All this has left me with 3 very different shades of brick. The brick colour is an acrylic mix of my own.

1543598643_LYwarehousepaint(2).JPG.926e79234841526fa3d03d5b878247fa.JPG

The end had the stone colour dry brushed, also the brickwork and lastly a heavy wash of black-green.

1346236830_LYwarehousepaint(3).JPG.815645322b7be129c9a49d4f1070ffb1.JPG

Closer inspection of this macro image shows that I'll need to dry brush all the brickwork again.:drag:

The lucams.

In hindsight these should have been made from thicker Evergreen siding, they would have been quicker to make for a start. The foam board really doesn't lend itself to the construction of smaller items! I also neglected to allow for glazing in their design.

Everything was primed and I'm aiming for that "overdue for a repaint" sort of look.

DSCF2789.JPG.f528c8f8fde8f30c2706607d15e42721.JPG

The awning was hashed up from styrene card and strip. It's almost ready to go together but first I need to make new floors for the upper storeys. The last ones ended up in the trash after I used a rattle can of paint/primer that I brought as a last resort because pure primer apparently is going out of production. A case of backward improvement if you ask me!

Simple fix with the lucam glazing was to cut away parts of the back and fit it through the holes!

DSCF2790.JPG.449749b65bfa7761658e1f58480cc1e1.JPG

That done, they received a wash of slimy black/green...

DSCF2791.JPG.c060d749db25c67ed1250025129c5ed8.JPG

...but I fear I might have over done it a tad.

That must have been the only brick building ever built in Bradford.  When I was a lad living in Bradford I don't remember a single brick in any of the pre 1960s buildings; not even for the cheapest houses.

Being of Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway provenance, it's not surprising. It definitely looks like brick in colour photographs.

Trouble is, I can't make up my mind about the signal box base. It looks like brick in black and white pictures but there's so much grime on it I doubt it will matter how I model it!

G'Day Folks

Looking at a close up of the lower part of the signalbox, I was struck by the similarity to the platform face next to the SB. Then onto the picture of the 'Jubilee' showing a good pic of the platform face, brick, I'd say 99% chance of it being brick.
