mm, looks more like stonework.  The base colour looks like a sandstone or millstone, and there are various sizes of blocks, particularly in length, that wouldn't happen with bricks, especially ones manufactured in a commercial brickworks brickworks.

Platform edges are stone and I'd hinge towards millstone. In some places they're that charcoal black that is/was most common in the West Riding!

 

The other side of the station had a high retaining wall that was black from top to bottom by 1966, with buildings across the road at the top to match.

 

One thing I'll admit to, is modeling the wrong side of Exchange. Trains for Queensbury would have departed from the other, GN side.  Reason I chose to model the Lancs & Yorks side is, it had the goods yard with that imposing warehouse. On the whole it was just the more interesting side of the station. 

 

There will be both LMS and LNER trains using it when it's finished though, it is just a layout after all.

On the plan there is a small set of passing loops with cross over between Exchange and Queensbury, so I could just use that as an out and back for both sections! One running session I'm really looking forward to, is to have 3 trains running on the roundy roundies and be in control of a couple more. One in and out DMU at Bradford and the Queensbury flyer running from Bradford, through Queensbury and on to the next loop behind Goathland!!!

 

Squatch. Time to stop daydreaming and get on with the roofs for that warehouse.

There are some brick buildings in Bradford.the recent series of books on the railways around Bradford (including the Queensbury lines have some excellent colour photos. If it helps once we can get out and about a bit easier I can go over to Bradford and gets some photos of what is still there.

The books are fantastic Baz.

A trip to Beadford for gathering any information on Exchange station would be unproductive. The only thing left of the old station are the lines beyond the new interchange and the Great Northern Victoria!

 

Looking from Bridge St. towards Exchange. I think that's each end of the same wall! 

 

Where the warehouse stood there's now a bus station and taxi rank.

 

This pic. shows construction of the new interchange. While this work was being undertaken, the West side of the station was closed and all services used the GN side! The last picture was taken in front of the near corner of the  Victoria in this pic.

 

The next three demonstrate just how grand Exchange was. Wonderfully ornate ironwork supporting two fine gass arches!

Lastly, I'll risk putting up this image which is the only one I could find with the glass intact. It is probably the oldest image of Bradford Exchange I could find!

 

  

The Vic. is still across the road though.

 

It's a very sorry state of affairs that such a grand station like Exchange was allowed to become so decrepit, when so many other towns still retain their termini such as Littlehampton and Whitby!

A bit more info

For the northlight style rooves on the warehouse I have employed the same method used on Queensbury's waiting rooms.

This time I used a decent caliper to space the grooves 10mm apart. Halfway along when the caliper wouldn't reach further than 150mm, I taped a second steel rule against one of the scribed lines and using a 30mm wide rule continued with the 10mm spacing between the two rulers.

 

Dark acrylic paint was applied, allowed to dry and the excess scrubbed away with a damp paper kitchen towel.

 

Then I ripped the sheet into 6 strips and am now ready to construct the roof sections.

Yes! was looking for the posts about when Goathland last took an outing! (7 6 years ago).

Someone is thinking of coming to see it but it's still apart waiting for warmer weather so I can finish the work that is ongoing.

Have got big plans for this year!

Love the overall roof photos Shaun,  that'll keep you busy for some time I suspect.

I've always been tempted to build a station with a large roof,  Bath Green Park on the S&D

was one I attempted a couple times but never got far, too ambitious a project for O scale I'm afraid.

The snow all gone ?   Happy Model building,  the warehouse is looking great !

It's taken 6 days to make and mount all the slates on this roof. It still needs weathering of course.

 

No less than four sheets of thin card had to be marked, scored and cut into strips.

 

 

After a bit of practice things speed up depending on how much detail is to be modeled. I included quite a few loose, chipped, cracked slates and the odd missing one.

 

Paint is my light blue/gray acrylic mix which will darken up when weathered.

 

 

In all this was a lot of work and took ages but I hope it all paid off.

Thank you for your kindness guys.  There was quite a bit of bodging involved actually which might have been due to the excessive use of the hot glue gun but it was very handy for mounting the perspex which I'm not all that happy with. At certain angles it looks far too sheer!

 

Big day today, I'm intent on getting the whole building finished and together! That and a bit more work on the side door for the garage 

(that'll be the warehouse in Bodgitish )

Got some modeling time in over the weekend.

 

Before the warehouse could have its final assembly, the decision was made to light the interior utilizing some LEDs from a continuous roll of 300.   These can be cut into blocks of three and with wires soldered on are perfect for the purpose of illuminating large building interiors. I used some pretty strong T-REX tape to hold everything in place, it also does quite a good job of hiding the wiring. For testing they're hooked up to a 9V battery, which gives just the right amount of ambience I'm looking for, for a busy inner-city building. 

Apologies in advance for the poor quality of the pictures.  

 

 

 

 

The roof required a fair bit of adjusting to get it all to line up. 

Now I have lit it up I'll just have to model the roof trussing and a few tons of goods, I'm thinking Indiana Jones, Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull!

 

 

I also modeled the near part of the road access internal wall from scraps of foam board and brick sheet. Paint is an antique white and black-green wash.

 

 

For a break (more of a distraction) another two wagons have been built also.  

5 Plank on an RCH underframe...

 

...and a GWR match truck. Underframe is much modified Ian Kirk, body is scratch built. I have modeled it with Dean/Churchwood brakes on one side and single RCH on the other so as to represent one with modified brakes that were fitted to much stock after the right hand only brake regulations came into effect in 1939.

Something a bit different!

Here's a little more on the lighting project that I missed yesterday.

 

Both floors have been included. I could have just got by with one. However, I tried being a skinflint with this on another large structure and found the lighting made the building look very hollow when the lights were on. More LED strips were needed of course, there's 18 strips of 3 in all!

The extra floor also helps with holding things in place and prevents warping!

 

Lastly this; Polymark is a kind of thick paint that is squeezed out like a thin toothpaste. It is an acrylic so sets quite quickly. I used it around the window panels to stop any light bleeding through the gaps. Next time I'm at the craft store I'll look to see if there are other colours. White would have worked better for this. Incidentally as can be seen, I washed the internal walls with the antique white in the hope of achieving the right feel to the overall effect.

Like I said a couple of posts ago, some top floor storage just needed to be modelled.

 

Here's the scene from that Indiana Jones movie...

 

Stuff like this is what I hope will set Grim-Up-North apart but how to model it without breaking the bank and taking a month of Sundays?

 

Foam!!!

 

First, I tried carving a block with a Stanley Knife. Not too bad but slow and chunky looking.

 

So, after digging out a few scraps of insulation foam I put on a coat and gloves, then headed to the barn and fired up my band saw. I quickly ripped the scraps into strips of various width, then cut the strips down into all sizes of little blocks.

So far so good.

 

Using the non-toxic super craft glue, I assembled all the blocks into haphazard piles, starting with a large chunk and piling up with smaller ones. 

When the glue was set, I tested the stacks for fit on the top floor of the new warehouse.

 

 

 

 

Lastly last night I gave the stacks a coat of acrylic Gesso to seal everything.

This morning was spent painting the individual boxes...  

 

 

...some of which have had a bit of detail added. Strips of duct tape and knife cuts as planking.

 

I figured on using a set of Heljan goods to add the final touches later.

 

The stacks on the left have received a wash of grimy black which picks up all the detail and fills any white gaps.

In hindsight I should have air-brushed it all black first. To be honest it's too cold to do that.

 

 

In dimmer light things are starting to look like the army warehouse from that movie.

   

 

It's not brilliant work but only needs to be seen through a grubby roof, so should look fine when it all comes together.
