Looking at it again possibly a bridge over something at various levels with the crossings/wing walls at an angle hence the bevelled edges. I would have said the structure for the under-bridge serving the incline in the Y of the Queensbury tri-angle - the doubt is because I thought you had already modelled it!

Don't worry John, there'll be plenty more mills!

Am really enjoying this build. It's completely different from anything else I've built.

The foam is so easy to work with. The Non-toxic superglue I found sticks it so well and hides most gaps. It's so easy to carve out shapes and impress all those stones.

Building one wall at a time it gets a coat of Gresso (The stuff used to prep. canvas for oil painting) which seals and hardens the surface but most of all it was free!

!2 months of 0 budget modeling has paid off because I can now afford to install a mini split aircon/ heat system in the garage!

Give my self a round of applause if I could for that. It will speed the layout build up no end.

G'Day Folks

Congratulation on the Air Con. work wonderful in the heat, but when we get down to freezing, they have a tendency to freeze up on the outside unit.

Quick update on the castle.

It's moving along quite well at about the half way mark.

The plan is to build up all the sections and paint them all at once before assembling all the sections and touching up all the joints.

Footprint is 15"x9", (about the same size as mine).

Still no suggestions as to which castle it is?

Castle - neither Goathland nor Queensbury had them.  Pickering or Skipton perhaps.

Nice guess John! I did look at Pickering castle but stumbled across Harewood!

9 miles north of Leeds tucked away in the trees and quite small it will fit into the available space on a hill just perfectly.

Managed to do another couple of walls yesterday evening. These two form the sides of what was once the great hall and the room below it. I should point out that this will be a representation of Harewood castle and not an exact scale model.

The stone courses are pressed into the foam with a putty knife and then three different screwdriver bits of various width are uses to create the vertical joins between each stone. Cutting out and filing the window archways is the hardest part, so it's a good job I'm building a ruin and hopefully when it is painted the poor cutting out  of these features will look like crumbling old stone walls.

Seem to have got a lot done today. The round stone staircase was done by drilling out two 8cm cubes of foam with a forstner bit in the pillar drill. I then trimmed the blocks down to size with a razor saw and then cut the blocks in half length-ways.  A few full steps have been glued in at ground floor level and more broken ones further up as per prototype. Windows were cut out, marked on the corresponding tower walls and cut out there to match. Did the same with 3 doorways also.

Mojo in full bloom I made up the two lower halves of south towers. Real progress, things are starting to take shape nicely.

First time for everything. More sort of carving it out really! It's not that hard and real fun. Would recommend  having ago if you can get a hold of a few scraps of insulation. Sounds  fantastic going down the pub for a couple right now!

Instead I got on with foam castle construction. I'm glad it's nearly finished because the novelty of cutting out the foam has worn off.

Messy stuff!! Gets in places. Ya know!

Not too sure about being "King of the Castle" I feel more like "Lord of the Foams" in "The Two Towers"!..

...which seemed to take up the best part of two evenings. (Bit like the film). A little modeling license has been employed here whereby a drastic reduction in height was needed. The adjoining wall is a hefty affair containing two deep south facing windows between which is the main chimney with stair ways leading off in opposite directions. The model has the big fireplace at ground level and the second part up is a sandwich  with stairs and chimney etc. instead of meat and cheese.  I have made an unprototypical castellated walkway across the very top connecting the two towers, the east one of which hasn't survived the test of time as well as the West!...

Just a few details left to make and the dungeons to build before the paint goes on.

Regards Shaun.

We had T-shirt weather here today (66F) and Mrs. S. said I should be outside. Having got a coat of that Gresso on the last bits made first thing this morning, I did just what she said and set up a work table on the grass outside the barn. Then mixed up some suitable mortar colour acrylics and broke out my paint gun. It's not quite as yellow as it looks, very sandy actually.

I might have to get Mrs. S. to piece this back together. She's better at puzzles than me!

That's already dry so this evening I'm going to start dry brushing on some chalky acrylic called believe it or not "Castle".

Reagards Shaun.

14"x9" and 11 inches total height. Not huge but impressive enough. Some of the walls are a scale 6 foot thick (24mm) which give it a rather robust look unlike a kit built structure!

The Hornby ones are a mere 8mm, are a mere 100mm to 150mm long bits and just don't cut the mustard, of the full size serious castles.  Harlech as walls similar in size to your scale.  Interestingly they also have very similar large windows, too.  I guess they could afford to do that where it was placed at the top of a massive rock outcrop.  I can't imagine much of the stone chucking artillery of the day would reach that far and any that could, would be pretty much out steam by the time it got there.  Just pick them up and return them with the additional oompf that the extra height would give them.  I read somewhere that 80 men defended the place from a complete army, who lost so many men, they just gave up, in the end and went away.  {Perhaps that's why they sent Welsh soldiers to Rorke's Drift   :jester::jester::jester: }

Are you going to give it a proper size hill to sit on?

Now you have made me want to watch Zulu!

Yes on a hill. Half of that hill goes over a tunnel and already has the abbey on top. The castle will be on the lower slope in the trees with a walled road in front and the railway emerging from behind.  The whole idea was conceived is to hide a scissor crossing. the railway will continue on an embankment and cross on a bridge over the road and both will proceed into a town.
