If we can get past the data storage  configuration issue I've got a real treat for you today.

It's been all out due to great weather here in Oregon. The warehouse has started to receive attention on the outside ready for its much needed repaint. I prefer to call it a make-over and you'll see why in due course. I have still not purchased a heating/cooling system for two reasons. One, is that my credit card was blocked and I'm still deciding what kind of system to get. Am leaning toward a self contained unit in lieu of saving lots of money on installation costs.

The platforms are coming along slowly. I originally made these from 3/4" ply but realized they need to be an inch thick so added a 5mm thick piece of MDF to each section. Not as easy as it sounds. The stone work is being added with O scale rough brick embossed plastic sheet. I should be able to get these finished today paint and all.

And lastly a flockaging alert.

About 90% of the ground cover has been appiled. Nice!

It's a totally different view.

Great work, Love the weathering in the first picture.:P

G'day fella

Can't beat a bit of natural weathering!

Much to do with a paint scraper to combat it though!!

It's really starting to look the part.

The last piece of foam scenery got done yesterday. So now I can add the grass to the inside of the triangle.

Nice bit of flockage mate, it's really transformed the look of the layout. Love the trackway especially.

Hi Al.

Found a gallon of white glue on sale the other day and have made a real dent in it already not to mention using up almost 4 big shaker canisters of Woodland scenics flockages. The rosemary bush is about to take a bashing too, I need a quite few trees. There's plenty of dog bed stuffing left and I used the short static grass so wont need to borrow your mower!:)

Hope I'm not being a party pooper but those platforms look quite high above rail level. Is there definitely room to open the carriage doors?

Yes they do look a bit too high don't they.

The platforms are 1 inch. That includes 1/4 for the thickness of the cork underlay. The reason they look tall is due to the tapered edge of the cork, which gives the impression that they are way too high!

So at 3/4 inch height measures up to the likes of Peco, Hornby and Ratio/ Wills etc.

Having said that we're looking  at a problem however because of the super elevation of the rails. Passengers alighting on the inside of the triangle will have to take Quite a jump down off of their train while those trying to alight/board on the outside platforms will be lucky to open the doors at all, especially mid coach.

Now that I think about it, I believe all the doors are modeled shut anyway!

However I do want to get it right so will investigate.

Worried and unable to sleep I ventured out to the garage armed with proprietary platform sections and a camera.

They check out up against a section of Ratio platform but are too high especially when compared to a photo of the real thing!

Luckily they are not glued down so I'll just run them through the thickness planer a couple of times tomorrow!

Thanks for being vigilent, I was about to paint them and screw them down!

Hi Paul.

I do appreciate that and hope nobody is in a rush to copy my unorthodox modeling methods!

Getting platform height correct can be a bit tricky. Dunster has a Ratio platform but on Goathland I got them wrong. Weary of making a hash of it again and after much procrastination I decided to make them removable and used wood. At first they weren't tall enough so added 6mm MDF which was not easy to do.

Beware. The idea of running them through my plane machine might not prove 100% successful.

I will endeavor to get it right.

Before I go injudiciously firing up my plane a calculation is needed.

Current thickness of platforms = 25mm. (including 5mm to compensate for the cork underlay).

25

-5

=20

Actual standard platform height above rail top = apox.12mm. (912mm actual).

-12

=8

Rail height 4.2mm (code 75. Goathland is code 100, 5mm!)     [first mistake]!!!

-4.2

=3.8

Slaters paving .5mm yet to be added. [second mistake]!!!

+.5

Total 4.3mm

How did I get it so wrong? 4.3 mm is almost the thickness of the MDF I added!

I'm going to make adjustment for the string used to create the super elevation  and three glue layers!

apox,1mm.

3.3mm

One of the three rules of woodwork is that you can always take more off so I'll start with 2mm and see what that looks like.

The result is that I have taken off approximately  3mm.

DSCF2188.JPG.4066cb550607337948410810009d357e.JPG

One thing I got wrong was using inches to work this out in the first place. The supposedly quarter inch MDF I used to increase the height was actually 7mm!

Some repairs are needed but nothing too drastic.

The real thing at Wilsden station compared to the model.

WilsdenStation.jpg.844353d4939127ff84a417d160b59c86.jpg

Bare in mind that this gap is twice as wide as the real thing because my curves are tighter and some locos and stock require a generous gap.

DSCF2181.JPG.bb37fef3055350e54a8130bfefc73a87.JPG

Head on it still looks a bit low but is satisfactory.DSCF2183.JPG.38e406dec694743a1f6c911cb66595b5.JPG

just need to rasp away the foam scenic section and make a new infill to go under the stone booking hall.

G'Day Folks.

Hi Shaun.

GN platforms vary a great deal, the lowest platforms I've ever found was at Finsbury Park, platforms 1,2,3,4, were in the region of 19" a very easy step up from rail level that I did many times, but the mainline platforms would have been more like 3'.

 Thanks Manna.

Talk about coincidence. I was just listening to an old ska tape which took me back to my youth when I went to an all day ska gig in Finbury Park. Remember it well too because it was a Saturday and Arsenal had just won a game.

One platform was full of Arsenal supporters and the other full of skinheads. (That would have been the tube station BTW). Our scooter club was into ska and also fully signed up to the Sussex MAG (Motorcycle Action Group). On a Thursday  we might be found playing some big hairy bikers at pool and darts down their local deep in the Sussex countryside and Saturday the same week be at a big ska festival in Brixton! Mad days!

Thought I'd wrap things up with the platform construction with a couple of snaps.

Looks spot on from here.

This area I'm working on is a bit wrong. When compressing a layout compromise will always have to be accepted. Like here where the platform width is down to a scale 4 foot!

We got our first covid jabs done this morning down at the expo center. Great the way the have it set up. You just drive up without any appointment, sign a consent form, some soldier administers the vaccine, you wait 15 minutes to make sure all is well and drive off!

Anyway it was nice to go out but now it's back to modeling. Yesterday I fancied starting a bit of scenic detailing so tried my hand at some willow herb or fire weed as it's known in some parts.

It took ages to settle on something reasonable. Four scatters were mixed, violet, pink, deep pink and a touch of scarlet.

DSCF2202.JPG.94c00f213ff6233b50dbd0610bb1abc7.JPG

I then found some old cheepo evergreen trees and cut all the bristles off.

DSCF2201.JPG.b04eac6495dabe22e4902b0cbeecf80f.JPG

A few bristles are held mid-stem in fine tweezers and  dipped in thinned, coloured PVA both ends. A reamer is poked into the foam scenery, the open end of the glue covered bristles dipped in the bloom mix, the reamer removed with one hand and the plants inserted.

I also used some tree roots, these are ash!

DSCF2203.JPG.a4d510ccf90f81f5cc3f46d81697ab0a.JPG

Still needs a lot doing but looks quite good, certainly adds something.

Hi Al.

Yes they do look more like hollyhocks than willow herb. It's hard to model...

Willow Herb publishing have a picture with it on the cover of all their books,
