ellss
First on my workbench, respraying and detailing a Bachmann Class 158. The end goal is a "Spotrail" Transport Scotland livery158 712. Initially dismantled and the old livery removed, primed with the standard Halfords Primer. The doors were sprayed in the Transport Scotland Silver/grey, then masked up ready for the base blue of the livery. Took the opportunity at this point to drill out the door interlock orange bodyside lights. Sprayed up in blue, then a coat of Hornby Gloss varnish. Once the Gloss varnish had dried then the fun properly began, transfer time...... Excellent transfers from
ellss
Railtec Models Transfers are excellent, and a very good service too! The outer ends were modified to accept the new style of lighting units fitted to the Scotrail fleet. DCC lighting was made up of a selection of spare components I had acquired over the years. For simplicity I have modelled daytime running configuration, when facing the unit the outer left is white, inner left red, inner right is a multi colour red/white and outer right is white. The holes drilled earlier in the orange bodyside lights have had orange micro LED's put in. Nearly finished. Just some Kadee's to fit to the outer ends and transfers on the outer ends.
Guest eddie reffin
Nice work. Just a couple of other things that you might want to consider. The gangway door has a metal cover on it so you no longer see the window in it. Also all our 158s have snowploughs instead of the original cowls. As I said though, you have made a lovely job of painting it and really impressed with the modified lights. Top job
millerhillboy
Are you going to model the honking loo's Used to commute daily on those or the 170s and the bogs on the 158 tended to be no go areas!! As Eddie says though, nice work.
Guest eddie reffin
Should have said, the ploughs are available as a cast item from Hurst Models. I have a set as I plan to do 158868 as it was the first unit I drove on the mainline.
Scott
I'm about to start the same project but having difficulty removing the inner ends, any tips?
ellss
Thank you for the comments! I had considered a set of ploughs but i wasnt organised enough to get them in time, it may be a modification later on depending how it looks on the layout. The door is something i haven't quite worked out what to do with, i had thought of a bit of hand painting over the window might work or i may use a piece of plasticard painted yellow, i may even try both and see what looks better! My base model was an origonal regional express one so is about twenty years old, the glue was fairly old. Once you get the roof off i found that gently flexing the sides back and forth weakened the glue quickly, the inner end just fell off!
ellss
Kadees fitted, final decals applied. Just the doors to sort out.
OTrail
Hi, great job with the 158 it looks really good! Please could you tell me where you got the destination blind transfers as I'm planning on doing an EMT respray on my Central Trains 158 soon. Thanks
Danim
what colour blue is it that you use
ellss
The blue i use is revel number 54. It sits between the colours of hornbys 156 and bachmanns 170. And is the closest of the shelf colour ive come up with for the transport scotland blue. Always up for suggests if you find a better one! The destination blind transfers were ebay purchases about 5 years ago and i havent seen them since unfortunately. Im sure Railtec could sort you out with some, its where i got the rest of the transfers from - very helpful! No connection just a happy customer! ellss
A couple of resprays from the last few months. A Network Rail class 82, my first foray into the yellow world! Some matching coaches required i think! A MK3 SLEP in the New Caledonian Sleeper livery (to match the 67 already completed.)
ellss
My first proper attempt at weathering. The rake of OTA wagons, weathered, ratchet straps added and one is a complete repaint into blue.
ellss
My resprayed Scotrail rake of 6 MK2's with the superb Dapol Class 68. Very pleased with how similar the blue's are!
ellss
My latest project, a pair of barrier wagons based on those at Edinburgh's Craigentinny depot.

ellss
Class 318 project thats been on my to do list for quite some time. I picked it up of ebay a few years ago, unmotorised and in a coarse but acceptable SPT livery. I added some kadee's and it was towed by one of my class 320's. I wasnt fully happy with the modification to the cab fronts so ive stripped it fully back to start again. After a fair bit of filling and sanding im happy with the cab face. A layer of the standard halfords primer (followed by some more filling and sanding) and im at the point of painting. Ive purchased another excellent replica railways chassis (also powering one of my class 320's), I have set about modifying it to fit the bratchell 318 shell and transplanting the bogie sides.

RMweb Gold Richy59 Posted March 11, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 11, 2018 (edited) Just stumbled upon your thread and loving your projects so far! I bought a number of Hornby Mk2E coaches last year and the Rail Tech transfers to turn them into ScotRail Mk2s for my 68 and only just gotten round to actually attempting it. Used Rainbow Railways Saltire blue enamel paint. Looks good so far, only just completed the body resprays last night and got some detailing to do (forgot all about the doors when I started spraying blue so they need done) and then try my hand at the decals. First time trying anything like this, certainly been an experience so far! Wondering if you could advise which paint you used for the Caledonian Sleeper? I bought the loco and planned to repaint some sleeper coaches but can't for the life of me figure out the colour. ellss
Wondering if you could advise which paint you used for the Caledonian Sleeper? I bought the loco and planned to repaint some sleeper coaches but can't for the life of me figure out the colour. I used R3sprays (which I believe is now rainbow railways) own mix for the Caledonian Sleeper 'Teal' colour. It is a very good colour, i would touch base with them to see if they still have some! ellss
Class 318 continues, took me a few attempts to get the roof colour correct. Its got a layer of gloss varnish applied in preparation for transfers. I havent painted the lighting units black yet, still sorting out the lights so i will do it once ive stopped drilling!
ellss
The class 318 continues. A set of ddc concepts wheels with sprung pickups fitted to the two trailer carriages, wired in with a pin plug and fitted with some seats (those visable through the windows, the interior is an approximation, not exact by any stretch of the imagination!) The underside of the centre carriage. Fitted with interior lighting and orange door lights.
ellss
Wiring all compleated and tested. Bodys mounted successfully to chassis. Step boards painted. Jobs outstanding - transfers, corridor conectors need painting, underside of centre carriage needs detailing, windows refitting.
