Coach bogie
I was working in Tring from 96 -2003 and was able to witness the transition form AC electrics to units. A visit on the way home from work, to Tring station was always worthwhile especially when Virgin began to repaint certain locos in 'Heritage' liveries. Spot the difference time. Here is 87001 on one of its' first trips out, numbers at each end with BR emblem in the middle. These pictures are RARE, why? - well read on Return journey was not so good as it appeared a couple of hours later DIT with a 47 at the front end. Within a couple of weeks 87001 was sent to Crewe to have the 'Stephensen' plates fitted. BR emblem moved to right hand end and single number. Here it is on the return journey to Willesden, again, still a RARE image. Soon after the SLS plaques were fitted below the name, in which from most will be familiar. Three versions all in the space of a few weeks. Good luck to the rtr boys if they go down the class 87 route as to which version to go for. All quiet on a Sunday morning at Rugby with a pair of EMUs stabled in the bay platforms, 5/10/80 Getting closer we see they are AM4 set 005 built around 1960 and class 312 set 312203 from 1975, 5/10/80 cheers

cravensdmufan
91 103 at Doncaster this morning. I don't normally photo modern liveried stuff but made an exception as this loco had it's blunt end exposed! As I was passing in a HST Mk3, I thought I might as well get the window down a bit sharpish!.

cravensdmufan
Question for all you AC Electric enthusiasts: Why were buffers on many Class 90's turned sideways in the 1990's? I often wondered. Would be interested if anyone has the answer, thanks!

298
Question for all you AC Electric enthusiasts: Why were buffers on many Class 90's turned sideways in the 1990's? I often wondered. Would be interested if anyone has the answer, thanks! They retract to use the buckeye and Pullman rubbing plate, similar to coach buffers. If you look carefully at photos of them with vertical buffers, the faces should look further back and the buckeye will be in the raised position.
royaloak
Question for all you AC Electric enthusiasts: Why were buffers on many Class 90's turned sideways in the 1990's? I often wondered. Would be interested if anyone has the answer, thanks! The buffers have been retracted to use the buckeye and rubbing plate. To retract the buffers they are turned 90 degrees and then pushed back out of the way. Edit- 298 beat me to it. 298
I've had to search on an old hard drive, but here are a few more of an un-named 87001 taken from a video or using the still image capture on my Camcorder as I didn't have a proper digital camera at this time (full details and dates to follow) Outside Willesden, hours before being released into traffic on the 16/05/2003: 17/05/2003, 1F17 1225 Eus-LLS: And it's first day on the EBW, 1G24 1115 Euston-BNS, 23/05. jonny777
Hi 298. Do you have a date for the introduction in the blue livery? The loco in my Watford photo appears very clean, and I wondered how many days it had been in service when I took it.

298
Hi 298. Do you have a date for the introduction in the blue livery? The loco in my Watford photo appears very clean, and I wondered how many days it had been in service when I took it. It entered traffic on the 17th May 2003. On your day it was allocated to the 08.19 Wolverhampton - Euston (1A28), 11.15 Euston - Birmingham (1G24), 13.15 Birmingham - Euston (1A57), 15.45 Euston - Wolverhampton (1G33), 18.19 Wolverhampton - Euston (1A09), and 23.45 Euston - Wolverhampton (1G46). But it all went a bit funny later in the day and ended up on 1G42 19.45 Euston-Wolves, dragged by 47828 as a positioning move to get the diesel to Oxley. 298
87006 in one of it's more bizarre liveries at Coventry, 17/05/2006. "Les Ross" on the day it was named: 86261 on hire (one of it's nameplates is up for auction soon I'm told) My favourite 90:
