RMweb Premium Northmoor Posted December 7, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 7, 2018 (edited) classes AL1-5 were electric blue but the AL6s were delivered in rail blue also just noticed some AL6 had red bufferbeams but others had blue That's not correct, what AL6s were delivered was NOT BR rail blue, it is darker than that. The repaint of "Alstom Heritage" at Willesden about 15 years ago was very close to the original dark blue. Gibbo675
Hi Folks, Shades of Blue !!!! There is some info on this thread about the various shades of blue and also red and blue buffer beams. Note that some class 25's had a similarly strange shade of blue applied by Brush (traction at Loughborough, not with bristle and a handle !) as can be seen in the Derby Sulzer thread. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/135475-al6-later-class86-did-they-initially-run-without-yellow-warning-panels/ I'm still confused about all of this. 298
That's not correct, what AL6s were delivered was NOT BR rail blue, it is darker than that. The repaint of "Vulcan Heritage" at Willesden about 15 years ago was very close to the original dark blue. The Intercity21 repaint of 86426 was probably the best, the heritage liveries carried by Alstom Heritage (86233) and 86259 look nice but don't have any historical accuracy. best 86228 was Vulcan Heritage, and like 86213 were painted into Virgin then immediately back into Intercity, which sort of makes them heritage repaints....

A few years back there was a proposal to repaint a Freightliner example in original livery, to mark their 50th anniversary and that of the company. This was approved at high level (I still have the emails) but sadly approval was then rescinded, reasons unknown. Anyway, I was involved in this project so I took paint samples from around 12 of the 16 in traffic, and the original topcoat over the primer was Rail Blue. Not lighter or darker, just Rail Blue. i can do this again if Heljan want confirmation. Edited February 14, 2019 by E3109 Addition

Johann Marsbar
87 001 seen shortly after its (re) naming Ceremony at Euston on 11th July 1977. Knew nothing about this beforehand, but just happened to be there on a "spotting" trip to London in the school holidays! The red signal lights also seem quite bright there - maybe the low light levels are a factor in making them look bright on film (it is misty and horrible in that photo)
