This is a typical early 1990s container train, but I notice that the second 86 has its pantograph lowered. Was this normal? I thought the idea was to have both locos working in order to maintain speeds over the stiffer gradients on their route.

I realise the second loco may have failed, but keeping in the train would tax the lead loco even more. I would appreciate info on the location.

Interesting photo...I’ve never seen a 'liner with one pan down before AFAIK...as you say probably failed. They have used single lecces on Anglo-Scottish intermodals in the past but they’ve always been mostly doubles.

As for location, I’d plump for just south of Carnforth with the Down Goods loop(s) visible and access road to Steamtown in the foreground.

Jack.

Not an expert on catenary but it looks like a couple of places on the GEML extension, although some of the sections of the 70's WCML extension into Scotland would look similar.

If on the GEML they could get away with only a single 86, its not very hilly and a peak periods your not going to get up much speed between signal checks.

Hi Jack,

Definitely Carnforth, the houses with the steeply sloping roofs are on Grosvenor Court and the hills in the background extreme left are those above Kirkby Lonsdale.

I think 84008 was a spare for the mobile load bank 009 and also lasted a long time beyond withdrawal.

84008 did last a long time, but not because it was a source of spares for 84009; I believe that was 84003.

I think you're right, 84003 was parked up at Derby RTC for years. Here's a poor Instamatic shot grabbed from a passing train, in June 1984. Someone will no doubt be along with a better one soon.

IIRC there was talk of 84002 & 010 being used by GEC as test beds for 3 phase drives. Nothing came of it, and they ended up at the bottom of a tip somewhere.

Quite a day for AC electric drags...I’ll add 92020 at Barrow on Trent, which was being hauled by 66731 in NHS colours from Wembley to Loughborough Brush...

GBRf 66731 & 92020 - 0Y92, Barrow

Certainly looked and sounded in fine fettle when it sped by.  I hope I haven't put a curse on it now !

Let’s hope there are a few more about next week as I’m off to KX on the Monday morning train.

As I understand the current very fluid position, there should be two diagrams from Thursday, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that changes.

Diagram 1:

3A09 - 05.00 Neville Hill T&RSMD - Bradford Forster Square BDQ
1A09 - 06.30 BDQ - London KIngs Cross KGX
1D09 - 10.03 KGX - Leeds LDS
1A30 - 12.45 LDS - KGX
1D20 - 15.33 KGX - LDS
1A46 - 18.15 LDS - KGX
1D33 - 21.25 KGX - LDS

5D33 - 00.26 LDS - Neville Hill T&RSMD

Diagram 2:

1A04 - 06.05 Leeds to Peterborough PBO
1N80 - 07.59 PBO to York YRK
1Y82 - 10.02 YRK to PBO
1N83 - 12.01 PBO to YRK
1Y86 - 14.03 YRK to PBO
1N87 - 16.01 PBO to YRK
1Y90 - 18.02 YRK to PBO
1D29 - 19.52 PBO to LDS

I’m not aware of what, if any, diagrams will operate on Saturdays and Sundays.

I'm very late to the party - only on page 37 at the mo'. I have a question regarding pantos on the Class 87s: Why did they carry cross-arm ones instead of single arms? I thought cross-arms were from some prehistoric period concerning DC operations? An enquiring mind should like to know (apologies if the question has been raised elsewhere).

Cheers,

Philip
