I'm very late to the party - only on page 37 at the mo'. I have a question regarding pantos on the Class 87s: Why did they carry cross-arm ones instead of single arms? I thought cross-arms were from some prehistoric period concerning DC operations? An enquiring mind should like to know (apologies if the question has been raised elsewhere).

Cheers,

Philip

I think you are confusing the cross arms with diamond pantographs.  The old diamond pantographs (as incorrectly fitted to Lima class 87) may look similar at a glance, but they are usually much bigger and the arms don't cross.  I am speculating, but the reason may have been that the cross arm provided more consistent operation in either direction compared to the Faively single arm type as they were symmetrical. Then BR in conjunction with Brecknell Willis developed the high speed single arm pantograph, which superseded it and became the design for  high speed pantographs all over the world...

@Titan Thanks for the reply - I hadn't realised that there was a difference in types of 'diamond/cross-arms' arms or even that the Stone-Faiveley (as on my Trix E3001) had been superseded by the Brecknell-Willis though I had of course seen B-W mentioned many times.

There you go, and as they say over here 'I'll go to bed less stupid than when I got up!'

Cheers,

Philip

About as bad a wheel flat as it’s possible to get judging by the noise when it passed me at Brighouse.  In fact, it sounded distinctly like there were very bad flats on each bogie of the 90.

It’s had an interesting journey (possibly less so for the driver I should imagine) judging from Real-time Trains and the rail map that I was watching.  It was stationary for a long time at Wigan North Western, leaving there at +67 minutes and then again between Balshaw Lane and Euxton Junction, by which time it was +135 minutes.

Is there ‘WheelChex’ (Wheel Impact Load Detector) equipment installed along the section of the WCML that it ran on between Crewe and Farington Junction?  If so, I wonder if it triggered an alarm with Network Rail.

Although timed to run at 75 mph, it was certainly being driven much slower as it passed me, probably around 30 mph and under clear signals so it’s not surprising that it lost even more time - it’s now +171minutes at Wakefield Kirkgate.

Yes you could be right it was on time before it arrived at Wigan unless it got worse as it got there and was going max 30 mph through Rosegrove, like you say the driver wouldn’t have been best pleased.22C8CFD4-3A6F-4E2B-8BAE-5536F2B227F8.jpeg.789087158158322c206f50fe4980a0c1.jpeg84C3B899-7845-458C-9336-A0C4B0327DD9.jpeg.036579f32c1834ad3bb22d38b089743b.jpeg

A fairly new 313 seen in January 1977.  Even the headcode blinds were in use then!

Always thought it was odd these and 315s had headcodes as they were built after most other trains had stopped displaying them
