Rivercider
Here are a couple of shots from 1980. Taken at Nuneaton, not the best as I was beaten for pace! 86218 is heading for Euston at Nuneaton, 23/7/80 86243 is also Euston bound at 1843 on a Wednesday afternoon, 23/7/80 cheers Edited August 16, 2016 by Rivercider
RMweb Premium Blobrick Posted August 16, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 16, 2016 Does it not depend on the OLE variant? On the old compound mark 1 stuff all the wires look to be some form of copper (judging on how it all turns green), whist the ECML has definitely got an Aluminium based catenary wire. Hi Zomboid I ve just checked with both the Doncaster and Morpeth OLE supervisors on the ECML, on duty at the moment, and they both confirm that they have Mk3b type caternary with copper contact wire, which is the same as here on the southern section of the Midland main line between St Pancras and Bedford. Neither of them are aware of any Aluminium sheathed contact wire on any other section, unless due to lower speed some could exist around Leeds? Bob C But just check with them what the catenary is, and I'll bet that the answer will come back 'AWAC'. Not AWACs, all you aeroplane fiends, but an aluminium conductor with two aluminium coated steel cores for strength. Any way, here is a badly lit and re-imaged 87013 at Preston

Zomboid
That's what I meant, AWAC catenary on mk3b (and some other flavours), copper based catenary on some mk1 variants. Contact wires almost always a copper alloy.
RMweb Gold 96701 Posted August 16, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 16, 2016 Hi 96701 See post no 70 Any idea what date 87013 s photo was taken? Bob C Ahhh, wrt to AWAC, this is what comes of answering old posts. The 87 photo was probably taken around 1972 / 4. I know I wasn't in full time employment until August 1973, and this looks like winter in Preston. Here's the original as I scanned it.

Contact wires almost always a copper alloy. It has to be copper alloy so that the carbons on the pantographs wear faster than the contact wire. It's all about hardness. Rivercider
A class 85 at Lancaster, headed North on the Down Fast (thanks Beast) My only photographic visit to Lancaster was in 1984. 85026 passes through Lancaster with what appears to be a train of tube wagons. edit By this time I imagine the tube wagons would be in use for moving railway sleepers, either timber ones to and from the creosote plant at Ditton, or concrete sleepers from various concrete plants 10/7/84 cheers Edited August 18, 2016 by Rivercider
