Bachmann Ivatt Class 2MT 2-6-2T Old & New

With an unaccountable burst of interest in this 1995-current model by Bachmann, and the prevailing scarcity of even the re-tooled 31-440 and 31-441DC, I found myself buying a few of the older tooling versions, with all their flaws, with a plan to create evocative images of those bygone days when these attractive 2-6-2Ts worked various branch lines as well as carriage stock etc.

I have read all the pages of this thread and apologise if there is a newer version.

Many may know that it is my modelling habit to enhance photos with editing, being equipped with only one working arm and wheelchair-bound, 'normal' modelling is difficult, I hope the powers that be will permit this below, an idea of 41221 (older tooling) given details from the newer chassis and my own rough approximation of what a re-tooled body might begin to look like.

Lovely models, and I have just bought the Irwell tome on the Ivatt 2-6-2Ts ...

Picture edited, will remove if required.

A couple of photo-edited images of what these lovely 2MTs might look like if given detailing and a slightly better body...  wouldn't that be nice?  Very attractive models my eye even as they are, and very good low prices these days for the older versions pre-31-440 and 31-441DC.

Pics edited, will remove if required.

Another view from similar angle, I confess to having bought a swag of these relatively inexpensive split-chassis models, UKP35-55 ea.   The collector's syndrome. :)

Note; engine has been detailed by editing, rather like the late-chassis 31-440 41243 and 31-441DC 41291 are.

Will remove if required, I think it shows the model as it can be made with detailing, very attractive indeed.

I must be living in a different world...  I have been enjoying buying models which are, shock, horror, up to 25 years old...  and am quite pleased by their detail, DC running, and robust construction.

Here is an Ebay purchase, UKP42.50 from a commercial seller 'buy now'  s/h weathered re-numbered un-boxed Ivatt 2MT 2-6-2T No.41285, push-pull fitted, it was a Midland and North Wales engine I think.

Somewhere between the seller's ad photos and my receiving it in NZ the model had been dropped onto a hard floor and the left rear buffer was bent, left side step fell off and is lost, and rear cab glass fell out, but oddly this last bit was in the ample soft newspaper and bubble-wrap packaging, maybe some couriers played football with the box? Also the rear coupling was smashed. I have attempted to straighten the rear buffer, and have edited a buffer under the l/h cab side. I'll find a spare screw-on rear coupling somewhere I hope.

I think it's a lovely model for forty-two quid. Disappointing about the damage but generally repairable and given its the early split chassis design with coarser motion and fewer details, still looks ok to me. Runs sweetly and quietly too.

cheers   very slight editing on photos, nothing very important. my collector's impulse has led me to buy several s/h models like this, including even a later-chassid 41243 version, yet to arrive but I think through customs, ah the drama! :)

I hope the photos give an idea of what is out there in the market for about forty quid.

Edit;

Update,  the missing steps were found, stuck flat to the underside of the chassis with the mounting plate at right angles on the chassis sides.  Oh joy, easily glued back on.

And I found what looks to be a straight replacement rear coupling!

And the sun has come out...   :)

I have one of these – it’s a lovely little machine and runs well. Possibly the most criticised feature is the prominent horizontal split in the rear bunker (visible in the photographs). We’ve been told that it is far cheaper to tool a chassis than a body. Perhaps that is why Bachmann hasn’t tooled the BR Standard version. Perhaps it is being worked on now; in case a newly aggressive Hornby decides to follow the tender version with a new Standard tank.

A very un-scientific comparison between the new chassis 31-440 and 31-441DC Ivatt 2MT 2-6-2T models, and the previous split-chassis 1995-2011 versions, having purchased via Ebay at UKP69.50  model of 41243 unboxed and slightly damaged version. This has the later DCC-ready chassis with details like injectors and sand box, pipes etc.

Below that an earlier split chassis 41310.

Just to point out that it is possible to fit the body of a split chassis version to the modern chassis, with a small amount of plastic removal in the area of the bunker floor (an area which can't be seen when the body is refitted). This is handy if you want a DCC-ready push-pull version, or to avoid renumbering/reliverying, or to take advantage of the much better chassis detailing, or simply to replace a worn-out split chassis.

I've never seen the chassis available separately. I've done the swap as a way of getting a new chassis push-pull version. The old split chassis was worn beyond further use, so I do now have a spare body, no doubt I'll get round to selling it some day.
